Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a continuing investigation of the characteristics of the low frequency ground motions produced by atmospheric explosions. The studies reported here have focused on two aspects of this problem: (1) the full-scale validation of nuclear tests, and (2) the preliminary evaluation of a theoretically-based prediction methodology. With regard to the validation study, the mathematical model has been applied to the theoretical simulation of ground motion data recorded from the Nevada Test Site atmospheric nuclear explosions TUMBLER I, UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE 10 and SMALL BOY. The results of these simulations have confirmed the fact that the observed low frequency ground motions from such explosions can be accounted for by the airblast-induced, elastic surface waves. Moreover, the simulation analysis of the ground motion data recorded from the near-surface SMALL BOY explosion has confirmed the existence of an 'exclusion radius' for such events, within which incident airblast energy is not efficiently coupled into the surface wave mode of propagation due to dissipation associated with strong, nonlinear interaction effects. On the other hand, the evidence provided by the TUMBLER I and UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE 10 analyses has indicated that this exclusion radius is effectively zero for explosions with significant height of burst.

Book excerpt: The Source Physics Experiment (SPE) will involve a series of explosions in various geologic and emplacement conditions to validate numerical simulation methods to predict behavior of seismic wave excitation and propagation for nuclear test monitoring. The first SPE's currently underway involve explosions in the Climax Stock (granitic geology) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Detailed geologic data and published material properties for the major lithologic units of the NNSS and surrounding region were used to build three-dimensional models for seismic wave propagation simulations. The geologic structure near the SPE shot point is quite varied including granitic, carbonate, tuff and alluvium lithologies. We performed preliminary ground motion simulations for a near-source domain covering 8 km x 8 km at the surface centered on the shot point to investigate various source and propagation effects using WPP, LLNL's anelastic seismic wave finite difference code. Simulations indicate that variations in wave propagation properties of the sub-surface will generate strongly path-dependent response once the energy has left the relatively small granitic geology of the near-surface Climax Stock near the SPE shot point. Rough topography to the north and west of SPE shot point causes additional complexity in the signals including energy on the transverse components. Waves propagate much faster through the granitic and carbonate formations and slower through the tuff and alluvium. Synthetic seismograms for a pure explosion source in a 3D geologic structure show large amplitudes on transverse component. For paths to the south sampling the granite, tuff and alluvium lithologies transverse component amplitudes are as high as 50% of that on the vertical and radial components.

Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental program was performed to determine the most promising techniques for simulating the air-blast-induced ground motions from a largeyield nuclear weapon. Two techniques were then selected for further development. One of the selected techniques employs a detonable gas mixture and the other a primacord matrix to generate a traveling shock wave which loads the ground. The nuclear air-blast overpressure environment is described and the simulation produced by either scheme is compared with this environment. The primacord technique was then selected because it was found to be the most practical and economical. Sufficient data are presented to enable the design of simulation experiments which use either technique. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report discusses vertical airblast-induced ground motions produced by nuclear explosions over a dry soil medium taken to model Frenchman Flat of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Material properties for use in first principle calculations were synthesized from very limited dynamic laboratory stress-strain data, various soil index characteristics, and seismic data. Parametric calculations with a one-dimensional, plane-strain finite difference code were used to define a theoretical simplified model that expresses peak vertical particle velocities and displacements as a function of yield, peak overpressure and depth. Ground motions predicted by this model were then compared to ground motion data from nuclear explosions in Frenchman Flat. In particular, predictions of the simplified model were reasonably consistent with PRISCILLA data which were a primary basis of empirical prediction procedures widely used in the design and analysis of strategic structures during the past ten years. The theoretical model could be altered (where little or no dynamic soil property data exist) to provide even better agreement between calculated and measured ground motions. Conversely, study of qualitative features of the theoretical results provide insight into the basic wave propagation phenomena in Frenchman Flat that could improve the interpretation of the experimental data such that a more consistent comparison between theory and experiment may result. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a preliminary analysis of the effects of variations in height of burst (HOB) on the low frequency ground motions induced by near-surface and atmospheric explosions. A mathematical model which can be used to simulate this component of the explosively generated ground motions is described and applied to the parametric investigation of the effects of HOB on a prototype 1 kt nuclear explosion detonated over a site model approximating the subsurface geology at Yucca Flat on the Nevada Test Site. These simulations indicate that although the details of the airblast loading vary considerably with HOB, the corresponding induced low frequency Rayleigh waves are essentially independent of HOB for HOB ranging from to 0 to 500m, at least for this site. The same theoretical model is also applied to the simulation of the low frequency ground motions to be expected from the proposed Pre-Direct Course HE experiment and a hypothetical surface burst test of the same yield at that site. It is shown that the surface waves predicted on the basis of the currently available subsurface model of the site are quite simple and pulse-like and also show little dependence on HOB over the range considered.

Particle acceleration, particle velocity, and soil stress gages were installed to measure the ground motions and stresses in the 1,500- to 50-psi predicted air-blast overpressure region (83 to 540 feet from ground zero) at depths below the ground surface of 1.5 to 30 feet. Time histories of all successful measurements are included in Appendixes A and B. Ground shock arrival time data indicated the occurrence of outrunning ground motion at the ground surface at a distance of about 600 feet from ground zero, or the 35-psi pressure level. Book excerpt: The objective was to measure ground motion pro duced by nuclear explosions at Eniwetok Proving Ground (EPG) as it varied with input pressure level, depth, and yield, and to correlate the measurements with similar data obtained at Nevada Test Site (NTS). No conclusive results were ob tained on transient displacements. Maximum vertical surface displacements on Koa were 2.5 to 2 inches downward at 2,000-, 3,144-, and 3,950-foot ground ranges, in that order, with a possible 2.5-foot upward and 15-foot outward displacement at 2,000 feet due to crater lip formation. At 840-foot ground range on Cactus, maximum downward surface displacement was approxi mately 1 to 1.5 inches. Without suggesting that it be taken as a generalization, it appears that transient displacements on Cactus and Koa are a weak function of ground range (or pressure level), under conditions of outrunning ground motion and are independent of yield. Two-dimensional motion of an elastic half-plane under an exponentially decaying normal load traveling at constant velocity along the boundary is determined analytically and the results are presented graphically. Analytic expressions in integral form are obtained for three-dimensional axisymmetric motion of an initially quiescent homogeneous isotropic elastic half-space underAN ARBITRARY AXISYMMETRIC TIME-DEPENDENT NORMAL LOADING, AND THESE EXPRESSIONS ARE UTILIZED FOR THE SPECIAL CASES OF A CONCENTRATED NORMAL POINT LOAD AND A UNIFORM CONCENTRATED NORMAL RING LOAD SUDDENLY APPLIED AND THEREAFTER MAINTAINED AT A FIXED POSITION ON THE PLANE BOUNDARY. Analytic expressions in integral form are obtained for the three-dimensional axisymmetric motion of a homogeneous isotropic visco-elastic half-space under identical conditions as for the elastic case.
