University Physics is a three-volume collection that meets the scope and sequence requirements for two- and three-semester calculus-based physics courses. Volume 1 covers mechanics, sound, oscillations, and waves. Volume 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism. Volume 3 covers optics and modern physics. This textbook emphasizes connections between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result.

Book excerpt: (Cont.) In the accelerating solutions, the whole system moves as a solid body so that no dissipation occurs and potential energy is continually converted into kinetic energy. In order to understand the quasi-steady motion, we analyze the motion of a similar system: a metal cylinder is placed inside a larger plastic cylinder filled with fluid and attached to a motor which fixes the larger cylinder's rotation rate. Our observations of this system, specifically, the differences between experiments and theory lead us to consider the effect of internal friction due to surface roughness. The resulting model's predictions are well supported by our observations. Finally, to rationalize the slow, quasi-steady rolling motion of the system, we incorporate surface roughness and cavitation into the theoretical model. These effects provide a restoring force on the inner cylinder; however, we find that surface roughness is the dominant effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cylinder investigates the surprising proliferation of cylindrical objects in the nineteenth century, such as steam engines, phonographs, panoramas, rotary printing presses, silos, safety locks, and many more. Examining this phenomenon through the lens of kinematics, the science of forcing motion, Helmut Müller-Sievers provides a new view of the history of mechanics and of the culture of the industrial revolution, including its literature, that focuses on the metaphysics and aesthetics of motion. Müller-Sievers explores how nineteenth-century prose falls in with the specific rhythm of cylindrical machinery, re-imagines the curvature of cylindrical spaces, and conjoins narrative progress and reflection in a single stylistic motion. Illuminating the intersection of engineering, culture, and literature, he argues for a concept of culture that includes an epoch’s relation to the motion of its machines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for students who are familiar with an introductory course in mechanics at the freshman level. With an emphasis on perspectives that are more fundamental and techniques more advanced than those given in most introductory mechanics textbooks, the book illuminates on notions where vectors are coordinate free, presents the importance of reference frames (inertial and non-inertial) to mechanics problems, the role of Galilean Relativity on invariance and covariance of physical quantities, a framework to perform calculations — free from the constraint of a fixed axis — in rotational dynamics, and others. Moreover, it provides clear links between concepts in mechanics and other branches of physics, such as thermodynamics and electrodynamics, so that students can possess a more complete view of what they learn within the confines of physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Basic Physics: Principles and Concepts’ is a book meant for students of physics from the late school to college levels, covering both general and advanced course materials. It is a great text on basic concepts in physics over a wide range of topics with a truly broad coverage, which makes it a source-book of unique value to students of physics – one that will be of use for teachers of the subject too. Students and teachers in related subjects like chemistry, biology, and the various engineering disciplines will also benefit greatly from it. The book is completely modern in approach, and is exhaustive and authentic. The presentation is exceptionally lucid, and captures the essential charm of physics. All the concepts are developed from elementary considerations, and are built up to quite advanced levels without loss of coherence, simplicity, or elegance. The mathematics is essentially at the high school level, and relatively advanced mathematical ideas have all been built up in a self-contained manner. What is the principle of similitude? What are polar and axial vectors? What is a wrench? How are sliding and rolling friction explained? What is an anharmonic oscillator? What is tidal force? How are the principal components of strain and stress defined? How does the time period of angular oscillations of a floating body depend on the metacentric height? What is boundary layer separation? What is the entropy principle? How does the Döppler formula look in the case of accelerated motion of the source and the observer? What is the relevance of diffraction in image formation? What is electrostatic shielding? What is the pathway of energy flow in an electrical circuit? What is ferromagnetism? What is back-EMF in a DC motor? What are metamaterials? What are the basic features of Rayleigh scattering? What is population inversion in laser operation? How are harmonic oscillators relevant in the explanation of the black body spectrum? What is relativistic aberration? What is spin-orbit coupling? What are the features of an op-amp? What is a SR flip-flop? For answers to all these and to a host of other relevant questions, you have to turn to the pages of this book. It has nineteen meticulously written chapters, systematically divided into sections and subsections, and a moderate number of well chosen problems with hints for their solution.

Book excerpt: This breakthrough book is the first to examine the rotational effects in earthquakes, a revolutionary concept in seismology. Existing models do no yet explain the significant rotational and twisting motions that occur during an earthquake and cause the failure of structures. The rotation and twist effects are investigated and described, and their consequences for designing tall buildings and other important structures are presented. This book will change the way the world views earthquakes.
