Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1902, William Burnside wrote: "A still undecided point in the theory of discontinuous groups is whether the order of a group many not be finite while the order of every operation it contains is finite." Since then, the Burnside problem, in different guises, has inspired a considerable amount of research. One variant of the Burnside problem, the restricted Burnside problem, asks whether (for a given r and n) there is a bound on the orders of finite r-generator groups of exponent n. This book provides the first comprehensive account of the many recent results in this area. By making extensive use of Lie ring techniques it allows a uniform treatment of the field and includes Kostrikin's theorem for groups of prime exponent as well as detailed information on groups of small (3,4,5,6,7,8,9) exponent. The treatment is intended to be self-contained and as such will be an invaluable introduction for postgraduate students and research workers. Included are extensive details of the use of computer algebra to verify computations.

Book excerpt: It is by no means clear what comprises the "heart" or "core" of algebra, the part of algebra which every algebraist should know. Hence we feel that a book on "our heart" might be useful. We have tried to catch this heart in a collection of about 150 short sections, written by leading algebraists in these areas. These sections are organized in 9 chapters A, B, . . . , I. Of course, the selection is partly based on personal preferences, and we ask you for your understanding if some selections do not meet your taste (for unknown reasons, we only had problems in the chapter "Groups" to get enough articles in time). We hope that this book sets up a standard of what all algebraists are supposed to know in "their" chapters; interested people from other areas should be able to get a quick idea about the area. So the target group consists of anyone interested in algebra, from graduate students to established researchers, including those who want to obtain a quick overview or a better understanding of our selected topics. The prerequisites are something like the contents of standard textbooks on higher algebra. This book should also enable the reader to read the "big" Handbook (Hazewinkel 1999-) and other handbooks. In case of multiple authors, the authors are listed alphabetically; so their order has nothing to do with the amounts of their contributions.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Burnside was one of the three most important algebraists who were involved in the transformation of group theory from its nineteenth-century origins to a deep twentieth-century subject. Building on work of earlier mathematicians, they were able to develop sophisticated tools for solving difficult problems. All of Burnside's papers are reproduced here, organized chronologically and with a detailed bibliography. Walter Feit has contributed a foreword, and a collection of introductory essays are included to provide a commentary on Burnside's work and set it in perspective along with a modern biography that draws on archive material.

Download or read book Finite Groups II written by B. Huppert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 17):~t? L It CIFDr- ! wei! unsre Weisheit Einfalt ist, From "Lohengrin", Richard Wagner At the time of the appearance of the first volume of this work in 1967, the tempestuous development of finite group theory had already made it virtually impossible to give a complete presentation of the subject in one treatise. The present volume and its successor have therefore the more modest aim of giving descriptions of the recent development of certain important parts of the subject, and even in these parts no attempt at completeness has been made. Chapter VII deals with the representation theory of finite groups in arbitrary fields with particular attention to those of non-zero charac teristic. That part of modular representation theory which is essentially the block theory of complex characters has not been included, as there are already monographs on this subject and others will shortly appear. Instead, we have restricted ourselves to such results as can be obtained by purely module-theoretical means.
Book Synopsis A Course in the Theory of Groups by : Derek J.S. Robinson
Download or read book A Course in the Theory of Groups written by Derek J.S. Robinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " A group is defined by means of the laws of combinations of its symbols," according to a celebrated dictum of Cayley. And this is probably still as good a one-line explanation as any. The concept of a group is surely one of the central ideas of mathematics. Certainly there are a few branches of that science in which groups are not employed implicitly or explicitly. Nor is the use of groups confined to pure mathematics. Quantum theory, molecular and atomic structure, and crystallography are just a few of the areas of science in which the idea of a group as a measure of symmetry has played an important part. The theory of groups is the oldest branch of modern algebra. Its origins are to be found in the work of Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), Paulo Ruffini (1765-1822), and Evariste Galois (1811-1832) on the theory of algebraic equations. Their groups consisted of permutations of the variables or of the roots of polynomials, and indeed for much of the nineteenth century all groups were finite permutation groups. Nevertheless many of the fundamental ideas of group theory were introduced by these early workers and their successors, Augustin Louis Cauchy (1789-1857), Ludwig Sylow (1832-1918), Camille Jordan (1838-1922) among others. The concept of an abstract group is clearly recognizable in the work of Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) but it did not really win widespread acceptance until Walther von Dyck (1856-1934) introduced presentations of groups.
Book Synopsis Computational Problems in Abstract Algebra by : John Leech
Download or read book Computational Problems in Abstract Algebra written by John Leech and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Problems in Abstract Algebra provides information pertinent to the application of computers to abstract algebra. This book discusses combinatorial problems dealing with things like generation of permutations, projective planes, orthogonal latin squares, graphs, difference sets, block designs, and Hadamard matrices. Comprised of 35 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the methods utilized in and results obtained by programs for the investigation of groups. This text then examines the method for establishing the order of a finite group defined by a set of relations satisfied by its generators. Other chapters describe the modification of the Todd–Coxeter coset enumeration process. This book discusses as well the difficulties that arise with multiplication and inverting programs, and of some ways to avoid or overcome them. The final chapter deals with the computational problems related to invariant factors in linear algebra. Mathematicians as well as students of algebra will find this book useful.
