This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. !T.ii-e of the Soul. At the risk of seeming to dwell tediously long on one subject, we propose to say a little more on the necessity that those who bring up children should recognize that they have souls as well as minds. Well-meaning persons even, who are themselves deeply attached to the Church, seem unable to work themselves out of that unhappy groove of thought and treatment of the young, by which the souls of children are condemned to lie all but fallow until they come to that most perilous age when childhood is opening out into youth; and this on the plea that they are not yet old enough to understand religion. One of our Bishops told the writer some few years ago that he considered the age usually fixed by the Bishops for Confirmation to be exactly the worst that could be selected, coinciding as it does with the period when fresh temptations of every kind have just begun to assail the soul, and have found it for the most part utterly unprepared by previous discipline and training; and allParish Priests will heartily re-echo this Bishop's opinion. Habits of sin and indifference have by that time taken possession of the young soul that has not been brought up as a true child of the Church, and those habits can never be rooted out by any but dogmatic teaching. We are all familiar enough with the question How are we to retain our youth after Confirmation ? which we hear asked from all quarters in the most piteous tones. For the real solution of the question we must go further back than Confirmation. Why should you wait till Confirmation to get a hold of them ? Why don't you retain them after Baptism ? Why not from the beginning bring them up as children of the Church, to look forward to their Confirmation and First Communion, instead of letting the whole ...

Book excerpt: This book is one of the many Islamic publications distributed by Mustafa Organization throughout the world in different languages with the aim of conveying the message of Islam to the people of the world. Mustafa Organization is a registered Organization that operates and is sustained through collaborative efforts of volunteers in many countries around the world, and it welcomes your involvement and support. Its objectives are numerous, yet its main goal is to spread the truth about the Islamic faith in general and the Shi`a School of Thought in particular due to the latter being misrepresented, misunderstood and its tenets often assaulted by many ignorant folks, Muslims and non-Muslims. Organization's purpose is to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge through a global medium, the Internet, to locations where such resources are not commonly or easily accessible or are resented, resisted and fought!

It aims to help parents to think for themselves and does not undertake to present ready-made formulas for the training of children or prescriptions for use in various emergencies. It is not mere theory, however; most of its materials lie within the author's experience as parent and as teacher. - Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Training of Children I Have read with deep interest the excellent paper on "The Religious Training of Children," by Mrs. Joel Swartz. The Subject is of supreme importance because it is fundamental. Church and State, home and society, business prosperity and national welfare, must be built upon this foundation of right character. The future pivots upon this. It will be bright or dark according to the sort of men and women we develop in our homes and schools. We must have solid rock-foundation if we are to build securely; and the rock is the Eternal Truth of God which the Christian religion gives us. The large experience and ripe wisdom of the author of this booklet make her conclusions and suggestions of great value. Parents and teachers may find inspiration and helpful guidance here. Mothers' Clubs and Children's Aid Societies may well ponder the principles set forth clearly in these pages. This is. a topic worthy of the thoughtful study of all who are interested in the betterment of mankind, and in the revived interest in it, manifested in so many quarters today, we see one of the brightest tokens of progress toward that ideal life to which our Lord has summoned us. Joel swartz Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.-prov. Some have doubted the reliability of thepromise in this passage of Scripture because the children of Christian parents do not always become the fol lowers of Christ. Yet candid thought will make all confess that the failure must be in the training and not in the divine promise. It must be that the parent has not comprehended the full meaning of the word train or the necessity of beginning the training with the child's earliest years, while its na ture - is still so plastic that it may be moulded into a true Christian character, or some outside influences have prevented it from being reared up in the way in which it should go. Book excerpt: A series of thirty articles on the nature and scope and methods of the wise training of children. This work is the ripest result of the lifetime study and experience of a Christian educator in the sphere of the home training of children. Every precept in its pages has been tested by the principles of Christian philosophy and by actual experiment in more than one generation of little ones. "This is next to the Bible decidedly the best book for parents ever published. It is worth its weight in gold to those who have the responsibility of training children....The greatest element of danger today in this country of ours is the lack of home training. Dr. Trumball has written many good books, but this is better than all the rest for the good it will do." -The North-western Monthly "It would be an unspeakable advantage to every parent to read this book. Its thirty chapters are full of condensed, practical Christian hints to those to whom God has entrusted the training of immortal souls for Himself. Its reading might change many of their views, help them to better habits, and suggest many ways in which they could influence their children's minds for good. How beautiful households would be, molded after the fashion outlined in this book." -The Treasury; a Magazine of Religious and Current Thought "Parents and others having the training of children would be all the better, whatever their experience, if they were to give it a careful perusal." -Glasgow Herald "We wish every parent could read a chapter headed 'Will-training, rather than Will-breaking.' and another on the duty not only of setting an example, but of training children so that special characteristics shall be modified or strengthened as circumstances require. This book is full of happy suggestions as to home atmosphere, interest in the children's pleasures and troubles, and, the evil of punishments inflicted just before bedtime....This admirable little work is 'the outcome of experiment and observation as a father and grandfather,' and may be usefully introduced to the notice of parents who are only in the theoretical stage of education....We wish it a large circulation and careful reading." -The Literary World "Eminently practical. He tells what training is, the duty of training; its scope shows that the training of the will is not will braking, and so on....The work is heartily commended." -Young Men CONTENTS. I.
