Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) and international trade play key roles in enhancing global technology transfer, fostering economic growth, and the increasing integration of the global economy. A country's market maturity level and export platform status are particularly important in determining the amount of FDI andtrade that a country receives. This dissertation focuses on the host market characteristics, the FDI-trade interaction, and how exchange rate risk affects a nation's bilateral trade volume. The first essay examines whether FDI is a complement or a substitute to the bilateral trade (export sales) and the extent to which FDI-trade relationship is affected by the host's market characteristics. In addition to examining the same problem at a disaggregated industry level, the second essay examines theallocation of industry-specific manufacturing FDI across different host countries. Both essays, respectively, use country- and industry-specific Japanese bilateral trade and outward FDI (establishment counts and values) into geographically and economically diverse host nations. Results from the aggregate country-level analysis show that Japanese FDI and export sales during 1989-1999 were complementary. However, the results are sensitive to host's maturity level and export platform status. Results from industry-level analysis show that the relationship between Japanese manufacturing FDI and trade is industry specific. For example, while Japanese outward FDI complements industry specific export sales in food, beverage and tobacco industries, in wood products, furniture, and basic metal manufacturing industries, it substitutes export sales. The third essay investigates the effects of real exchange rate volatility due to shocks in both the fundamental and the microstructure component of the exchange rate on the volume of imports. Empirical results based on monthly bilateral trade data between the U.S., Canada, Germany and Hong Kong indicate that volatility in exchange rate due to shocks in the microstructure aspect of the exchange market has a trade depressing impact. The effect of volatility inthe fundamental exchange rate on the volume of trade, on the other hand, is mixed, suggesting the possibility that importers of different commodity groups treat the effect of exchange risk in the fundamental component on their trading activities differently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic agents interact in structural relationships through time and space. This work starts from the empirical observation that all three dimensions, namely time, space, and structural functional forms, are important for an integrative framework of modern empirical analysis in regional science. The work thus aims at combining up-to-date econometric tools from the fields of spatial econometrics, panel time-series analysis and structural simultaneous equation modelling to analysis the different research questions at hand. Most of the topics dealt within this work start from a concrete empirical problem, while problem solving also aims at generating some new knowledge in a methodological way, e.g. by the complementary use of Monte Carlo simulation studies to compare the empirical performance of different estimators for specific data samples. Following a first introductory chapter, the work is structured in three parts addressing major issues in building up a stylized regional economic model such as interregional migration, factor and final demand estimation. All empirical applications use German regional data.

Book excerpt: One of the most significant techniques to which companies and organizations have turned to improve service delivery and reduce costs has been outsourcing. Over the last 10 years, almost any process has been successfully outsourced. But during that period there have been failures too; projects that never realised their objectives or that had unforeseen impact on business. Global Outsourcing Strategies is a state-of-the-art guide to the best lessons to be learned for successfully implementing and outsourcing projects, or for revisiting existing operations. The 22 chapters explore some of the new areas for outsourcing, after traditional targets such as IT and finance. Information is provided on the different facets of the outsourcing process, such as contract negotiation, the risks involved in outsourcing, the need for service level agreements, the critical requirements needed to build and sustain outsourcing relationships, and ethical supply chain issues. There are also sections exploring the impact of outsourcing on organizational structures; the long term effects; legal issues; management control and inter-firm relationships; as well as case studies from both the public and private sector on the practical side of outsourcing. The book will appeal to practitioners and researchers alike. This is a must-have guide for any organization approaching outsourcing as a global (or local) strategy and for those organizations now reviewing or developing their outsourcing partnerships.

Thus, a full understanding of the relationship between trade in goods and FDI is important for obtaining a complete picture of the extent and sources of international linkages. We investigate whether FDI serves as a complement to trade or a substitute for trade based on the effects identified by the Rybczynski theorem whereby an increase in a factor of production used intensively in one sector affects production both in that sector and in other sectors. Using detailed data on bilateral capital and trade flows between the United States and individual Latin American countries, we examine the linkages between FDI into particular sectors of Latin American economies and the net exports of those and other manufacturing sectors. We find that FDI from the United States can lead to significant, and varied, shifts in the composition of activity in many Latin American countries and across many manufacturing industries.

Book excerpt: This book brings together studies conducted by researchers in East Asian countries who seek to better understand the impact of China s rise and the consequent policy challenges. The expert contributors illustrate that the rise of China and its integration with the rest of the world is one of the most important developments in the global economy. Over the past thirty years or so, China s economy has grown at nearly ten percent per annum with the expansion of the modern, export-oriented industrial sector, to become the third largest economy in the world and the second largest in trade. This book reviews the economic growth of East Asian countries since the 1990s and the various impacts that the rise of China has had on these countries. In particular, it addresses policy challenges faced in coping with the rise of China and maintaining economic growth. This timely book will strongly appeal to academics and researchers focusing on East Asia and China as well as those interested in international trade, development and economic growth.

Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows started gaining traction in South Asia from the late 20th century onwards, when nations from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) began moving away from highly controlled regimes and adopting liberal and open economic policies. In the context of surplus labour and capital scarcity faced by South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, to varying degrees, the economic reform process has provided an opportunity to actively promote inward FDI flows, with the goal of providing the much-needed capital for the growth of this region. Several policy initiatives were undertaken to attract FDI and incentives were announced to fascinate investors, resulting in the inflow of FDI across the region. This book examines FDI inflows in SAARC nations in the light of regional policy changes in the 21st century. It investigates the relationship between trade and FDI in the region, and also provides insights into the ease of doing business in the SAARC region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian multinationals have been active in the world economy since early 1960s. However, their number and scale of operation have grown significantly in the last fifteen years or so. In the face of increasing global competition unleashed by extensive liberalization measures, Indian firms have adopted the strategy of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) as an integral part of their business strategies. By undertaking greenfield OFDI and brownfield OFDI for acquiring foreign companies, Indian firms are enhancing their potential for growth and global competitiveness. Consequently India has emerged as a major developing source country of FDI and Indian multinationals are likely to affect world development in several ways. The book analyses the phenomenon of Indian multinationals from both macro level factors and firm-level corporate strategies and examines its implications for India and host countries. A detailed investigation of Indian overseas investment flows and stocks from sectoral, regional, ownership and motivational perspectives provides a rigorous long-run coverage of Indian multinational firms from 1970s onwards. The role of innovation, entrepreneurial skills, scale of business, productivity, and the role of government policies, received critical attention in explaining the emergence of Indian multinationals. The comprehensive quantitative and case studies approach offers valuable insights into the behaviour and impacts of these new global actors on home and host countries. This book offers a number of lessons to home country, host countries, and Indian enterprises becoming multinationals. With the growing global interest from policy makers, business practitioners, researchers, and students in Indian multinationals, this book would serve as an important and timely reading for all of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FDI has proved to be the most dynamic defensive and offensive response to globalization. This book provides an in-depth evaluation of the rationale as well as theoretical and empirical explanations of the outward internationalization of firms from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia. The authors present the first broader empirical evidence on transition economies' OFDI and internationalization, evaluate the role of transnational companies from transition economies and development implications of outward internationalization for home economies. They put the experience of firms from transition economies into the framework of existing theories, study to what extent are the experiences of Austria, Portugal and Finland applicable to transition economies, illustrate general macro economic trends of the international business practices of firms from transition economies by case studies, examine the main determinants and barriers to the outward internationalization process, offer a representative set of cases and best business/government practices relevant for other transition economies, identify specificity in internationalization by firms from transition economies due to transition processes and systemic background and apply network theory as a complementary explanation for such internationalization due to former historical ties and cultural vicinities. A pioneering work on outward investment by transition economies, this book is the first in the world to present a more systematic analysis of the internationalization of firms from transition economies, based on results of the two ACE projects: "Outward internationalization facilitating transformation and EU Accession; The case of Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia" and "Networking Through OFDI" including also Poland and Estonia.
