Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Regulation of Currencies: Being an Examination of the Principles, on Which It Is Proposed to Restrict, Within Certain Fixed Limits, the Future Issues on Credit of the Bank of England, and of the Other Banking Establishments Throughout the Country When the first edition of this Treatise was sent to the press in the month of August last, all questions relating to the currency seemed for the time so entirely to have lost their interest, and the disposition to acquiesce in the provisions of the new Bank Bill, as a settlement of all the great points in controversy, and an efficient and permanent remedy for the various evils which the public had been taught to ascribe to the mismanagement of the bank-note circulation, appeared to be so nearly universal, that any attempt to revive the discussion, or to turn the current of public opinion, had become an enterprise peculiarly hopeless; and I certainly had very little encouragement to expect, that it would be possibe even to obtain a hearing for a new argument on the subject, and especially for an argument presenting itself in a shape so singularly uninviting as that of a close printed octavo of more than fourteen sheets of letter-press. On my recent return, however, from aboard, after an absence of some months from this country, I found the state of things considerably changed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “intriguing plan” addressing shadow banking, regulation, and the continuing quest for financial stability (Financial Times). Years have passed since the world experienced one of the worst financial crises in history, and while countless experts have analyzed it, many central questions remain unanswered. Should money creation be considered a “public” or “private” activity—or both? What do we mean by, and want from, financial stability? What role should regulation play? How would we design our monetary institutions if we could start from scratch? In The Money Problem, Morgan Ricks addresses these questions and more, offering a practical yet elegant blueprint for a modernized system of money and banking—one that, crucially, can be accomplished through incremental changes to the United States’ current system. He brings a critical, missing dimension to the ongoing debates over financial stability policy, arguing that the issue is primarily one of monetary system design. The Money Problem offers a way to mitigate the risk of catastrophic panic in the future, and it will expand the financial reform conversation in the United States and abroad. “Highly recommended.” —Choice

The intent of the study or research was to test or verify the author’s hypothesis, thus “unstable currencies equals an unstable country” by understudying currencies in top ten countries and bottom ten countries ranked in the 2016 World Prosperity Index and Fragile States Index 2016; to determine whether there is a co-relationship between stable or unstable currencies and a country’s prosperity or failure/ misery. ‘The Value of Offshore Banking to the Global Financial System’; ‘Inflation Targeting, why the value of money matters to you’, and ‘Exchange Traded Funds’ are the author’s previous books. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the legal foundations of central bank digital currency (CBDC) under central bank and monetary law. Absent strong legal foundations, the issuance of CBDC poses legal, financial and reputational risks for central banks. While the appropriate design of the legal framework will up to a degree depend on the design features of the CBDC, some general conclusions can be made. First, most central bank laws do not currently authorize the issuance of CBDC to the general public. Second, from a monetary law perspective, it is not evident that “currency” status can be attributed to CBDC. While the central bank law issue can be solved through rather straithforward law reform, the monetary law issue poses fundmental legal policy challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capital adequacy regulations or quantity restrictions on bank portfolios put forward by the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision have virtually become an international standard of prudential regulation. Recent proposals aim at extending this approach to market risks, in particular to foreign exchange risk. The present paper provides a critical analysis of proposals to introduce foreign exchange position limits on a uniform cross-country basis, focusing on their effectiveness and their possible impact on the functioning of both mature and developing foreign exchange markets. Theoretical considerations are underpinned in the paper with descriptions of existing or proposed regulations, in a broad range of both industrial and developing countries. Experiences with the use of foreign exchange position limits in developing countries provide insight into their widespread use for other than prudential purposes, in particular to support exchange rate and exchange control policies.

Book excerpt: In the opinion of the Fathers of the Republic coin was the only money that the people needed; paper was but an incident, a make-shift that might be used to bridge over periods of scarcity of coin; it was in no sense regarded as a permanent medium of exchange. ~ William Brough, Chapter VII: Mandatory Money and Free Money "Here we see how money first came into use in the world.it becomes money only when it is used as the common medium of exchange." First published in 1896, The Natural Law of Money is a fascinating look into the mind of the man who played a pivotal role in world of economic thinking. William Brough argues forcefully that privately supplied money offers benefits not offered by government-supplied money. Contents include. The Beginning of Money Bi-Metallism and Mono-Metallism Paper-Money and Banking Paper-Money in Colonial Times Monetary System of Canada as Contrasted with that of The United States Money, Capital, and Interest Mandatory Money and Free Money The Hoarding Panic of July 1893 WILLIAM BROUGH (b.1826) began to study medicine as a young man but abandoned it to join the world of business. He moved to New York in the mid-19th century and then to Pennsylvania, where he was a pioneer in the development of the oil industry. Upon his retirement, he devoted his time to the study of economics that resulted in a tenured professorship in his name at Williams College.
