Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prognosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Heart In the course of the ages the heart, like other organs of the body, has been viewed in a great variety of ways. In ancient times it seems to have been regarded as a sort of heel of Achilles, in that it was held to be immune to all ordinary diseases. It was not unnatural that the inability to detect cardiac abnormalities should lead to the belief that the heart itself could not become diseased. Even the great discovery of Harvey was not followed by any immediate increase in the knowledge of cardiac pathology. Book excerpt: One of the most time-consuming tasks in clinical medicine is seeking the opinions of specialist colleagues. There is a pressure not only to make referrals appropriate but also to summarize the case in the language of the specialist. This book explains basic physiologic and pathophysiologic mechanisms of cardiovascular disease in a straightforward manner, gives guidelines as to when referral is appropriate, and, uniquely, explains what the specialist is likely to do. It is ideal for any hospital doctor, generalist, or even senior medical student who may need a cardiology opinion, or for that ma.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lettsomian Lectures on the Treatment of Some of the Forms of Valvular Disease of the Heart: Delivered Before the Medical Society of London TI Medical Society of London has honoured me by ex pressing the wish that these Lectures should be published. I comply with the request, regretfully conscious that much of imperfection attaches to them. It was my intention to have included a brief sketch of the treatment of diseases of the aortic valves; I soon found, however, that this, to be consistent with my plan of exposition, was impossible. This plan is mentioned at the commencement of my first lecture; but I may add that I could not approach questions of treatment of any disease without formulating the bases on which I conceive such treatment should rest. To do otherwise would be, in my Opinion, to promulgate an unscientific empiricism. In order, therefore, to define the bases for treatment, I have been obliged to touch upon questions of pathology and diagnosis where I have considered that these have not been made sufficiently manifest by extant evidence. As far as possible I have avoided controversy, and have dealt with facts rather than with Opinions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart Disease: With Special Reference to Prognosis and Treatment Advantage is taken of the demand for a new edition of the work on the Heart to make the book more complete, and with this view chapters on acute affections of the heart, Endocarditis, Pericarditis, Myocarditis, and on Aneurysm of the Arch of the Aorta, have been added. In these, as in the original work, no attempt is made to give a systematic and complete treatise on each subject, or to enter into a discussion of conflicting views which have been entertained on various points of pathology and etiology. The object has been rather to endeavour to place before the reader a clinical picture of each disease and to emphasize the points which are of chief importance in diagnosis and prognosis. A short account has been given of mechanical strain of the heart, and Of the stokes-adams' syndrome; and the description of the treatment of chronic valvular disease has been somewhat amplified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Points in Regard to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Disease The subject of the diagnosis and treat ment of heart disease is so large and so important, and so many points are worthy of prolonged discussion, that it would be impossible to condense into one paper of reasonable length more than a few points in regard to it. In what follows, therefore, merely some thoughts and Opinions in relation to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart will be alluded to, much of the ground being either entirely ignored or briefly mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Heart and Arteries: Their Causes, Nature and Treatment A colleague, a patient of mine, now on the retired list, was many years ago refused by a life insurance office because he had a valvular defect in his heart. Now, if he had been a layman, or if he had not had the advantage of knowing something more than is taught in ordinary text books, he might have done as many a one has done under like circumstances - gone home, given himself up for lost, and verified the insurance doctor's prognosis by dying in a short time. He did nothing of the kind. He went to work as usual, made up his mind to insure himself, and has lived long enough to save the sum he would have paid in premiums three or four times over. Not very long ago an old patient of mine came to me in a terrible state of agitation. A note he brought me, announcing the fact that an insurance office to which he had applied for a policy could not see its way to accept him, explained his trouble. He had a valvular defect, it is true, but it was fully compensated. I assured him that there was not the least necessity for him to regard the refusal as a sentence of death, and advised him to follow the example of my friend and insure himself. Life took a new aspect to him he recovered his spirits and has not required any assistance from me since that time. As my object is to deal more especially with the therapeutic: of heart disease, I shall only devote to the consideration of the pathology of diseases of the heart and its vessels just so much Space as is needed for my purpose. My work on Iodide of Arsenic in Organic Disease of the Heart being now out of print, I have made use of the material it contained in the present volume, and also of the cases narrated in a paper which I contributed to the World's Homoeopathic Congress of r893, entitled The Curative Action of Homoeopathic Remedies in Cases of Organic Disease of the Heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Heart: Diagnosis and Treatment In writing the following pages, I have been scrupulously careful not to place my own unsustained assertions in opposition to the results of clinical demonstrations or extreme probabilities. I have also endeavored to give the anatomy, or topography, of the structures under consideration, with as much accuracy as possible. There are no such obstacles now, in the way of writing intelligibly on diagnosis of diseases of the heart, as there were even twenty-five years ago. If medicine has not yet become a science, it has, at least, so far advanced as to recognize its own defects, and to be conscious of its absolute knowledge. Physicians now know where their knowledge ends and their theories begin; and in this they are far in advance of their forefathers. My aim has been to limit myself, as closely as possible, to known facts, and to indulge in no idle speculations, for the purpose of introducing some favorite theory of my own, in order to make myself seem original. I need not tell my intelligent readers that this treatise is merely an abstract; but it is hoped that they will find it what the author designed it to be, a careful and conscientious epitome of the knowledge now possessed by the profession on the subject of which it treats. My only claim to their commendation will consist in having placed the knowledge already possessed in a more accessible form, of having made the facts we daily need to use more tangible, by stripping them of some of their garniture, and grouping them in closer and more obvious relations to each other.
