Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Phosphate Beds of South Carolina The physical geography of the area occupied by the phosphate, beds is so important, not only to a proper understanding of the his tory of their formation, but also to a right appreciation of their economic value, that it will be well to set it 'forth briefly before we consider the beds themselves. The coast of the United States between the parallels of 25 and 35 north latitude, forms a shallow and very regular westward curve.' The depth of this bight is about two hundred miles, and the width of the Opening measured from Cape Hatteras its northernmost, to Cape Florida its Southernmost point, is not far from six hundred miles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century in Phosphates and Fertilizers: Sketch of the South Carolina Phosphate Industry The phosphate region of South Carolina lies along the coast, and practically parallel to the shore line, for a distance of about seventy miles, extending from the Wando River, on the north, to Broad River, on the south, and at a distance of from ten to thirty miles from the ocean. North of this region occasional specimens have been reported in this State, notably in the neighborhood of Georgetown, but no deposit has ever been developed. The beds discovered still further north, in North Carolina, are of low grade and no com mercial importance. South of Broad River, with the exception of a few isolated specimens found in some of the Georgia coastal rivers, a similar condition of affairs prevails until the State of Florida is reached. Even here the deposits located on the eastern coast, unlike the valuable beds of the western and central portions of the State, have proven of no commercial value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida, South Carolina, and Canadian Phosphates: Giving a Complete Account of Their Occurrence, Methods and Cost of Production, Quantities Raised and Commercial Importance Although there is an abundance of literature upon the subject of the geological formation and chemical analysis of the various phosphates which have hitherto been discovered, yet it appears to me that the practical, though possibly sordid, side of the question has been rather neglected. Since, however, the phosphate mining industry is being carried on with the primary intention and hope of obtaining satisfactory returns from a pecuniary rather than a scientific point of view, I have ventured to give in the following pages an account, from a practical standpoint, of my personal investigations during the past few years in the phosphate fields of Florida, South Carolina and Canada. This book is therefore addressed to those who are commercially interested in phosphates, and should it be the means of giving them fuller information than they would be likely to gather elsewhere, then my efforts will be amply rewarded. C Winsmith of South Carolina Fellow-Citizens of the State of South Carolina: Lord Brougham has said "until time shall be no more will a test of the progress which mankind has made in wisdom and in virtue be derived from the veneration paid to the immortal name of Washington." My countrymen, the name of Washington stands like a Colossus upon the pages of history - the "Father of his Country," the Cincinnatus of the west, who led his countrymen to victory and a nation to glory. Heedless of his voice of admonitory and paternal wisdom, the fierce strife of bitter sectionalism and disjunctive provincialism has brought woes unnumbered upon our once happy country, has crimsoned our land with the blood of thousands untimely slain, and has cast the dismal glare of barbarism over the face of fair America. In his farewell address to his countrymen our noble Washington said: "It will be worthy of a free and enlightened and, at no distant period, a great nation to give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence." Again he said: "I have labored to discourage all kinds of local attachments and distinctions of country by denominating the whole by the greater name of American." Oblivious of those ideas of "exalted justice and benevolence," forgetting the very name of "American" citizen, the attempt was made to trample in the dust the flag of our country, to tear into shreds its noble history, and to establish upon a corner stone of human slavery a southern sectional confederacy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stratigraphy, Structure and Phosphate Deposits of the Pungo River Formation of North Carolina The phosphorites of the Pungo River Formation were deposited in a restricted marine basin which had open seaward access to a southward-flowing cool - water cur rent. Structural features that produced this restriction were: (1) north-south trending hinge lines which bor dered the basin of phosphate deposition to the east and to the west, and (2) east to northeast-trending structural noses which formed the northern and southern bound aries of the basin (fig. The depth of water in the area of phosphate accumula tion, as interpreted from foraminifera, was about 100 to 200 meters. The clastic sedimentation rate was low to moderate, and phosphate deposition probably took place slowly. Abundant life was present, chiefly as planktonic and nektonic forms. The rare remains of normal marine benthos show that the bottom waters were periodically non - toxic. The ph of these waters varied from near to more than as shown by the deposition of both phosphate and calcite. In this Operae tion the sand may be separated from the valuable parts. This opinion, however, requires a confirmation by experiment. The material which remains after the sand is separated, con tains phosphate of lime, carbonate of lime and magnesia, pot ash and soda; those elements which make the marl the most valuable. If any cheap process for washing the marls could be employed, the material could be transported to most of the midland counties with profit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Carolina, a Primer: An Article Prepared for the Encyclopedia Americana They belong to the Eocene and are composed of corals and gigantic oyster shells. Just above tide water they pass under the Ashley and Cooper marls, composed of many-cham bered shells (foraminifera), sometimes of so fine and compact a structure as to fit them for building purposes. Fragments broken from these marls and rounded by wave action form the phosphate rock of commerce. These nodules contain 55 to 61 per cent. Of phosphate of lime and have been quarried at the depth of one to six feet; they are also found on the bottom of the rivers, and on sea bottoms ex tending from North Carolina to Florida. The remains of the mastodon, elephant, tapir, horse, cow, and hog are found mingled with them, though the Europeans met none of these animals on their arrival, nor were any of the Indians acquainted with them. These marls afford excellent structural limes, and material for the manufacture of artificial cement. Green sands containing 4 to 6 per cent. Of potash in the form of glauconite also occur here.
