In the present work, two of these catalytic systems were studied, Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalysts. Particular attention is paid to their performance in the presence of alkali compounds when bio-diesel is utilized as the alternative fuel.Firstly, this thesis focuses on the catalytic behavior of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst using different aging characteristics of road mileage in order to improve the efficiency of an ammonia SCR system on an after-treatment line composed by a DOC + DPF + SCR. The studied catalyst is a commercial diesel oxidation catalyst (Pt/Pd/Al2O3) provided by Continental. Hydrothermal aging under different conditions on carrots of monolith were performed. Also studied in the monolith form over the commercial DOC, the influence of the addition of different alkali metal species (K and Na) on the commercial DOC through catalytic tests performed on this structured catalyst under multicomponent (C3H6 / CO / NO / NO2) co-feeding conditions was explored. Aiming at investigating the effects of the presence of different alkali metal species on the DOC at the level of active phase, homemade bimetallic DOC is prepared and then different alkali metal species incorporated. Finally, encouraged by the evident influence of alkali compounds on DOCs, their impacts on the downstream SCR catalysts are also studied in this thesis. The studied SCR catalyst is a commercial V2O5-based catalyst provided by UMICORE company.

Book excerpt: Within the DEVCAT project, high performance high-dust SCR catalysts related to different fuels have been developed, leading to an improved understanding of chemical and physical mechanisms of the reactions at the catalyst. The main focus was put on the development of commercial SCR catalysts for the application in coal-, biomass- and co-combustion derived flue gas with high DeNOx-activity and low SO2/SO3-conversion being able to convert a significantly high share of flue gas elemental mercury into its oxidised form. Oxidised mercury is subsequently absorbed in wet flue gas desulphurisation. Catalysts with different composition including the addition of new metal oxides as well as nano-material and modified geometry have been produced and were tested in micro-, technical-, bench- and full-scale SCR-reactors. The enhanced properties of the newly developed catalysts were demonstrated for all scales consistently. Interactions of relevant pollutants at the catalyst have been identified. Deactivation of newly developed catalysts in flue gas of coaland co-combustion plants was shown to be similar to conventional catalysts. In addition, the regeneration process of heavily deactivated catalysts was studied. A 3D-CFD SCR model was further developed and validated including the processes of deactivation and lifetime behaviour. The model was calibrated with experimental data generated within the project. The model allows the prediction of the distribution of flue gas components from the boiler up to downstream of the catalyst. The widespread and holistic research approach included measurements at lab- and full-scale FGDs in order to identify interactions leading to overall efficient multi-pollutant control.

Book excerpt: This study was undertaken in order to assess the potential for oxidizing NO to NO{sub 2} in flue gas environments, with the aim of promoting the so-called fast SCR reaction. In principle this can result in improved SCR kinetics and reduced SCR catalyst volumes. Prior to commencing experimental work, a literature study was undertaken to identify candidate catalysts for screening. Selection criteria comprised (1) proven (or likely) activity for NO oxidation, (2) low activity for SO2 oxidation (where data were available), and (3) inexpensive component materials. Catalysts identified included supported base metal oxides, supported and unsupported mixed metal oxides, and metal ion exchanged ZSM-5 (Fe, Co, Cu). For comparison purposes, several low loaded Pt catalysts (0.5 wt% Pt) were also included in the study. Screening experiments were conducted using a synthetic feed gas representative of flue gas from coal-fired utility boilers: [NO] = 250 ppm, [SO{sub 2}] = 0 or 2800 ppm, [H{sub 2}O] = 7%, [CO{sub 2}] = 12%, [O{sub 2}] = 3.5%, balance = N{sub 2}; T = 275-375 C. Studies conducted in the absence of SO{sub 2} revealed a number of supported and unsupported metal oxides to be extremely active for NO oxidation to NO{sub 2}. These included known catalysts (Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2}, FeMnO{sub 3}, Cr{sub 2}O{sub 3}/TiO{sub 2}), as well as a new one identified in this work, CrFeO{sub x}/SiO{sub 2}. However, in the presence of SO{sub 2}, all the catalysts tested were found to be severely deactivated with respect to NO oxidation. Of these, Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2}, Pt/ZSM-5 and Pt/CeO{sub 2} showed the highest activity for NO oxidation in the presence of SO{sub 2} (based on peak NO conversions to NO{sub 2}), although in no cases did the NO conversion exceed 7%. Reactor studies indicate there are two components to SO{sub 2}-induced deactivation of Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2}, corresponding to an irreversible deactivation due to sulfation of the surface of the Co{sub 3}O{sub 4} phase, together with a reversible inhibition due to competitive adsorption of SO{sub 2} with NO on the catalyst. In an effort to minimize the deactivating effect of SO{sub 2} on Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2}, two synthetic approaches were briefly examined. These consisted of (1) the incorporation of highly dispersed Co(II) ions in silica, as a non-sulfating matrix, via the sol-gel preparation of CoO-SiO{sub 2}; and (2) the sol-gel preparation of a mixed metal oxide, CoO-Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5}-SiO{sub 2}, with the aim of exploiting the acidity of the niobium oxide to minimize SO2 adsorption. While both catalysts showed almost no activity for NO oxidation in the absence of SO{sub 2}, when SO{sub 2} was present low activity was observed, indicating that SO{sub 2} acts as a promoter for NO oxidation over these materials. The kinetics of NO oxidation over Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2}, Pt/SiO{sub 2} and Pt/CeO{sub 2} were also examined. Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2} was found to exhibit a higher apparent activation energy for NO oxidation than the Pt catalysts, while the combined reaction order in NO and O{sub 2} for the three catalysts was very close to one. CO{sub 2} was found to have no effect on the kinetics of NO oxidation over these catalysts. The presence of H{sub 2}O caused a decrease in NO conversion for both Co{sub 3}O{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2} and Pt/CeO{sub 2} catalysts, while no effect was observed for Pt/SiO{sub 2}. The inhibiting effect of water was reversible and is attributed to competitive adsorption with the reactants. In sum, this study has shown that a variety of base metal catalysts are very active for NO oxidation. However, all of the catalysts studied are strongly deactivated in the presence of 2800 ppm SO{sub 2} at typical flue gas temperatures; consequently improving catalyst resistance to SO{sub x} will be a pre-requisite if the fast SCR concept is to be applied to coal-fired flue gas conditions.

A downstream SCR catalyst substrate can be used to get additional NOx conversion by using the SCRF® outlet NH3 to increase the cumulative NOx conversion of the system. In this study, NOx reduction, NH3 slip and PM oxidation performance of a Cu-zeolite SCRF® with a downstream Cu-zeolite SCR were investigated based on engine experimental data at steady state conditions. The experimental data were collected at varying SCRF® inlet temperatures, space velocities, inlet NOx concentrations, NO2/ NOx ratios at ammonia to NOx ratios (ANR) between 1.02 to 1.10. The results demonstrated that the SCRF® with downstream SCR together can achieve NOx conversion efficiency > 98% at ANRs between 1.02 - 1.10 (which may have been due to measurement inaccuracies in downstream SCRF 98% at ANRs between 1.02 - 1.10 (which may have been due to measurement inaccuracies in downstream SCRF®/SCRdata), for the inlet temperature range of 200 - 370°C, space velocity in the range of 10 to 34 k/hr and inlet NO2/ NOx in the range of 0.3 - 0.5. However, NH3 slip from the SCRF® decreases and NOx concentration downstream of the SCRF® increases with the oxidation of PM in the SCRF®. The PM oxidation kinetics are affected by the deNOx reactions, hence, the SCRF® with urea dosing showed ~80 % lower reaction rates during passive oxidation when compared to the production CPF. The effect of varying fuel rail injection pressure on the primary particle diameter and on the Elemental Carbon (EC) and Organic Carbon (OC) fraction of the total carbon was also studied. The primary particle diameter was found to be in the range of 28-30 nm with no effect of the variation in fuel rail injection pressure on it. The OC part of the Total Carbon (TC) did not vary significantly with fuel rail injection pressure. The EC content increased with decrease in fuel rail injection pressure.

In the presence of the catalyst, the ammonia reacts with NOx to convert it to nitrogen and water vapor, Although SCR is widely practiced in Japan and Europe, there are numerous technical uncertainties associated with applying SCR to US coals. These uncertainties include: (1) potential catalyst deactivation due to poisoning by trace metal species present in US coals that are not present in other fuel performance of the technology and effects on the balance-of-plant equipment in the presence of high amounts of SO2 and SO3. Book excerpt: Development of alternative fuel refineries, in order to improve global sustainability through increased biofuel production, has been increasingly supported by both government and private companies. Thermochemical processes such as hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and pyrolysis are leading technologies in this area. However, characterization, treatment, and reuse of aqueous by-products produced by such processes have received little attention. This dissertation is focused on aqueous phase characterization and catalytic advanced oxidation processing in novel microscale reactors. Novel char catalysts and improved process design were developed for efficient removal of organic contaminants. Small acids, cyclic pentenes, and carboxylic compounds such as phenol were initially identified. Model compounds were chosen based on these findings, and catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) processes in batch reactors conducted, in order to obtain reaction rate kinetics. The mechanism of compound oxidation was developed and shown through DFT analysis to be a production of hydroxyl free radicals (OH0́) in the presence of an oxidant and the N-doped char catalyst. The OH0́ free radicals readily react with the dissolved organic compound, which was further confirmed with a FeO-N-doped char catalysts in a modified Fenton-like reaction system. In order to better develop a treatment processes which could integrate with a biorefinery, all process engineering experiments were conducted in a continuous solid-catalyzed microscale-based reactor utilizing the FeO-N-doped char catalyst. Time scale analysis was used for reactor geometry optimization in an effort to reduce diffusion time. The design led to a parallel plate reactor with channel depth of 500 microns. Thermochemical aqueous phases produced by pilot scale processes were characterized in detailed by extensive analytical methods. Traditional methods of spectroscopic analysis were limited in the ability to identify more complex oligomeric compounds and thus newer methods such as ICR-MS were utilized. The aqueous phases were successfully treated by the novel catalyst in the microreactor with removal of over 70% total organic carbon present at atmospheric pressure and at 90 ℗ʻC. Some aqueous phase samples were more complex in nature however, successful decontamination was achieved. Catalytic wet oxidation processing in microscale-based reactors proves to be a plausible treatment option for process water in biorefineries.
