Book excerpt: New understandings of learning and the brain, greater appreciation of the impact of culture on learners, and the differing values and expectations of families have created an educational environment ripe for expanded school choice. The result has been a rapid and little understood expansion of pre-collegiate educational opportunities. For parents anxious to find the best fit for their children, the growth in choice has been both a boon and a challenge. Choosing the Right Educational Path for Your Child seeks to reveal the various school designs, from public to private, from secular to religious, and from progressive to conservative. The mission assumptions, the economic models, and the pedagogical practices of each are examined. With chapters from leading experts from a variety of educational paths, readers will gain a thorough understanding of the ever-changing landscape of American education in the 21st Century.

Book excerpt: Your past, your present, and your perceptions of the future are a powerful part of your life. What do you do with your past? How do you view your personal future? What impact does that view of the future have on you right this moment? Do you have any control over where your life goes from here, or are you simply a pawn in a great chess game?Avoiding the temptation to provide a simple self-help recipe or to ignore the dark and serious issues of life, Forward Story leads readers to a challenging reflection on meaning, purpose, and the future. This book equips you to take action and to be purposeful in the way you live. Rather than telling you how to live, Forward Story requires that you actually be the author of your own story. If you want to live a life in harmony with your values, purpose, and ambition, this book provides what you need in order to write the future you desire.Endorsements:"e;Forward Story is a compilation, with interesting storytelling, of everything I have learned about life, success, and failure in my eighty-three years. Casey has done a marvelous job of writing down in an orderly manner what I wished I could have heard when I was twenty years of age-and thereby could have avoided most of the pitfalls I experienced."e; Bill Martin, VP, Texas Instruments"e;Forward Story includes abundant anecdotal and historical narrative to illustrate and clarify the concepts of writing one's personal Forward Story. Casey relies on his ability to guide, persuade, and motivate others to a higher level of achievement, to successful accomplishment, and to the satisfaction of a job well-done. Read the book! Take the advice! Follow the steps in writing your own Forward Story. You will be glad you did!"e; Jimmy Creel, Ed.D., Assistant Professor, Lamar University"e;For every dramatic performance, every achievement, every success, there's a story behind the story. It's called the backstory. Mark Casey writes the more important chapter, the Forward Story. This is a guide to help you achieve that success, to realize your performance, and to live your dream. Pulling from his own goal-oriented successes, and inspired by the achieved dreams from science, literature, public service, and sports, Mark provides a practical handbook to help you write your future and live the life you have yet to imagine."e; Thomas Graham, President and CEO, Crosswind Communications, LLC"e;I enjoyed three consecutive careers as a preacher, lawyer, and corporate senior executive, so I have had my share of transitional moments. As I was preparing to retire several years ago, Mark shared the concept of this book with me. My wife and I wrote our Forward Story for the first two years of retirement, and what a positive difference that made! Mark's book is a refreshing reminder of what it takes to successfully maneuver through the ambiguities of life's constant flux. Whatever your age and whatever changes you are facing, take the time to read and ponder this book."e; James W. Poppell, former Executive VP (Retired), NextEra Energy, Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992, Calhuasí, an isolated Andean town, got its first road. Newly connected to Ecuador's large cities, Calhuasí experienced rapid social-spatial change, which Kate Swanson richly describes in Begging as a Path to Progress. Based on nineteen months of fieldwork, Swanson's study pays particular attention to the ideas and practices surrounding youth. While begging seems to be inconsistent with—or even an affront to—ideas about childhood in the developed world, Swanson demonstrates that the majority of income earned from begging goes toward funding Ecuadorian children's educations in hopes of securing more prosperous futures. Examining beggars' organized migration networks, as well as the degree to which children can express agency and fulfill personal ambitions through begging, Swanson argues that Calhuasí's beggars are capable of canny engagement with the forces of change. She also shows how frequent movement between rural and urban Ecuador has altered both, masculinizing the countryside and complicating the Ecuadorian conflation of whiteness and cities. Finally, her study unpacks ongoing conflicts over programs to “clean up” Quito and other major cities, noting that revanchist efforts have had multiple effects—spurring more dangerous transnational migration, for example, while also providing some women and children with tourist-friendly local spaces in which to sell a notion of Andean authenticity.

Book excerpt: Hi mama (or dad!). I've been where you are. The darkness, the unknowns, the fear, the uncertainty -- everything that accompanies a hearing loss diagnosis. You may feel all of these things at once. You may ebb and flow between them. Or you may not know what you feel at all. And that is okay. When you are told your child has significant hearing loss, there is no right reaction. Tears may flow, or they may refuse to come. Anger may boil over, or it may fester. Grief can pave the way, or it can be pushed aside. We all process serious, life-altering news differently. My own family received that news on October 18, 2019. In some ways, it feels like a lifetime ago. In others, the pain and emotions are still fresh. Time is funny that way. My goal in sharing my son Cooper's story -- our story, really -- is to show you that you are truly never alone. This journey to Holland (hang in there, I'll get to the relevancy of this) can feel like a lonely one at the beginning. But when you find acceptance, when you open your heart, there is so much beauty to be found along the way.

Book excerpt: A touching story of family, loss, and memory. Dara's grandmother, Lok Yeay, is full of stories about her life growing up in Cambodia, before she immigrated to the United States. Lok Yeay tells her granddaughter of the fruits and plants that grew there, and how her family would sit in their yard and watch the stars that glowed like fireflies. Lok Yeay tells Dara about her brother, Lok Ta, who is still in Cambodia, and how one day she will return with Dara and Dara's family to visit the place she still considers home. But when a phone call disrupts Lok Yeay's dream to see her brother again, Dara becomes determined to bring her grandmother back to a place of happiness. Anne Sibley O'Brien's dreamlike illustrations beautifully complement this fictional story based on real-life experiences. Back matter contains information about the admission of Cambodian refugees into the United States, specifically Maine, after soldiers forced them out of their homeland in the 1970s. An author's note and glossary are also included. A PATH OF STARS was originally developed for the New Mainers Book Project, part of the Maine Humanities Council's Born to Read program. The Project sponsors high-quality children's picture books created from the experiences of Maine's refugee communities, to preserve and present their cultural heritage and to promote their English language literacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication is one of life’s most fundamental joys, yet one often taken for granted until it is lost or fails to develop. Yet for millions of children each year, the skills that encompass communication stall or do not emerge at all. Even a mild disorder or temporary interruption in development can have long-term effects and result in serious and far-reaching deficits that touch every aspect of a child’s life. Each year, millions of children and their families join the ranks of those who are navigating a life they never expected, and frequently feel they are unable to take on. While it is critical to address the child’s deficits with supports and specific interventions, it is equally important to directly address the impact on the family, from the marital relationship to the well-being of siblings. With a warm and compassionate approach, Suzanne Ducharme provides parents with comprehensive information about speech and language development and the intervention process, but also delves deeply into the fears, concerns, and questions that every parent faces when something goes wrong. She provides families with information and resources, but also support and perspective. Using real stories throughout, Ducharme is able to illustrate the range of difficulties, challenges, and triumphs of families who love and support children with speech and language issues.

Book excerpt: Mysteries, mazes, and magic combine in this smart, funny summer-camp fantasy -- like THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY for kids! Dahlia Sherman loves magic, and Math Club, and Guitar Hero. She isn't so fond of nature walks, and Hebrew campfire songs, and mean girls her own age.All of which makes a week at summer camp pretty much the worst idea ever. But within minutes of arriving at camp, Dahlia realizes that it might not be as bad as she'd feared. First she sees two little girls walk right through the walls of her cabin. Then come the dreams -- frighteningly detailed visions of a young man being pursued through 1930s New York City. How are the dreams and the girls related? Why is Dahlia the only one who can see any of them? And what's up with the overgrown, strangely shaped hedge maze that none of the campers are allowed to touch? Dahlia's increasingly dangerous quest for answers will lead her right to the center of the maze -- but it will take all her courage, smarts, and sleight-of-hand skills to get her back out again.
