Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an original study aimed at understanding how vacuum magnetic fields change with time. Specifically, it describes the waves that radiate from a sphere when the electric current on its surface is turned on or off, either suddenly, gradually, or periodically. Numerical simulations are an invaluable source of information about this and related subjects, but they are often more difficult to interpret than exact, closed-form solutions that can easily be applied to a variety of situations. Thus, the objective here is to obtain an exact solution of Maxwell’s equations in closed form—something simple, yet rigorous, which can be used as a model for understanding transient magnetic fields in more complicated situations. The work therefore stands as a self-contained solution of Maxwell’s equations for an electric current wrapped around the surface of a sphere. This study assumes a strong background in electromagnetism or a related research area. Online animations are available for each figure to better illustrate the motions of magnetic field lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the observed electronic properties of condensed matter systems such as clusters of atoms, solids with long or short range order (amorphous and liquid metals) are governed by the local atomic arrangements around the probe site. The topics in this important volume include: Molecules and clusters; Point defects and defect complexes in solids; Hydrogen and positive muons in metals and semiconductors; Disordered solids and liquid metals; Diffusion and clustering in bulk, on surfaces; and other restricted geometry; High temperature superconductors including C60 assembled materials.

Book Synopsis The Magnetic Field of the Earth by : Ronald T. Merrill
Download or read book The Magnetic Field of the Earth written by Ronald T. Merrill and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics involved in studies of the Earth's magnetic field and its secular variation range from the intricate observations of geomagnetism, to worldwide studies of archeomagnetism and paleomagnetism, through to the complex mathematics of dynamo theory. Traditionally these different aspects of geomagnetism have in the main been studied and presented in isolation from each other. This text draws together these lines of inquiry into an integrated framework to highlight the interrelationships and thus to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the geomagnetic field.

Book Synopsis Comparative Planetology with an Earth Perspective by : Moustafa T. Chahine

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systematic study of the planets has experienced a slow but steady progress from the efforts of a single individual (Galileo Galilei, 1564-1642) to nations that individually and collectively create whole agencies and complex infrastructures devoted to the exploration and understanding of our solar system. This quest for knowledge continues in earnest today as we attempt to understand Earth's unique place among its closest neighbors. Known diversities emphasize fractionation processes that may have occurred in the nebula during early solar system formation, and the vastly different evolutionary paths taken by the planets and their satellites. The discovery of similarities and differences among the planets has given rise to a discipline of "Comparative Planetology. " Here terrestrial properties and giant planet atmospheres are viewed and probed, surface geologies are related to atmospheres and oceans, interior structures are envisioned, magnetic fields mapped, and bizarre differences in satellites and ring systems continue to enlighten, amaze and confound the detectives of planetary science. A science organizing committee with international participation was formed to develop a conference program to address the basic issues and the fundamental processes that are common among the planets. The goals of the meeting were twofold: first the production of a reference source on comparative planetology for academia, and second, the provision of an impetus for NASA to begin a program devoted to this emerging science discipline. The conference program accommodated seventeen invited papers and nineteen poster presentations.

The behavior of the magnetic and electric fields from a vertical magnetic dipole source at the surface of the earth (after Wait [1951,1955]). earth, the experimental curve so plotted should have the same shape as a portion of the ap propriate theoretical curve, but with the ordinates and abscissas shifted by an amount dependent on the resistivity. The conductivity can be determined from the amount of shift between the field data and the theoretical curve. A detailed description of the curve matching procedure is found in a text by Keller and Frischknecht (1966). The curve matching procedure, though used, has several disadvantages. Measurements must be made over a diagnostic portion of the theoretical curve, one in which there is some curvature, so that the amount of shift required to make a match can be determined uniquely. This means that the approximate conductivity of the earth must be known when measurements are made. Secondly, determination of a single value of conductivity requires measurements made over a wide range of frequencies. This would appear to be wasteful of data, inasmuch as the equations indicate that a single measurement at a single frequency should be enough to de termine conductivity.

Book Synopsis Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields by : National Research Council
Download or read book Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-18 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) to which people are routinely exposed cause health effects? This volume assesses the data and draws conclusions about the consequences of human exposure to EMF. The committee examines what is known about three kinds of health effects associated with EMF: cancer, primarily childhood leukemia; reproduction and development; and neurobiological effects. This book provides a detailed discussion of hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization for each. Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields also discusses the tools available to measure exposure, common types of exposures, and what is known about the effects of exposure. The committee looks at correlations between EMF exposure and carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, neurobehavioral effects, reproductive and developmental effects, effects on melatonin and other neurochemicals, and effects on bone healing and stimulated cell growth.
