Book Synopsis Dollar and Yen by : Ronald I. McKinnon

Book excerpt: Dollar and Yen analyzes the friction between the United States and Japan from the viewpoint of exchange rate economics. From the mid-1950s to the early 1990s, Japan grew faster than any other major industrial economy, displacing the United States in dominance of worldwide manufacturing markets. In the 1970s and 1980s, many books appeared linking the apparent decline of the United States in the world economy to unfair Japanese practices that closed the Japanese market to a wide range of foreign goods. Dollar and Yen analyzes the friction between the United States and Japan from the viewpoint of exchange rate economics. The authors argue against the prevailing view that the trade imbalance should be corrected by dollar depreciation, saying that adjustment through the exchange rate is both ineffective and costly. Stepping outside the traditional dichotomy between international trade and international finance, they link the yen's tremendous appreciation from 1971 to mid-1995 to mercantile pressure from the United States arising from trade tensions between the two countries. Although sometimes resisted by the Bank of Japan, this yen appreciation nevertheless forced unwanted deflation on the Japanese economy after 1985--resulting in two major recessions (endaka fukyos). The authors argue for relaxing commercial tensions between the two countries, and for limiting future economic downturns, by combining a commercial compact for mutual trade liberalization with a monetary accord for stabilizing the yen-dollar exchange rate.

Book Synopsis Anatomy of Sudden Yen Appreciations by : Mr.Fei Han
Download or read book Anatomy of Sudden Yen Appreciations written by Mr.Fei Han and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yen is an important barometer for the Japanese economy. Depreciations are typically associated with favorable economic developments such as increased corporate profits, rising equity prices, and upward pressure on domestic consumer prices. On the other hand, large and sharp appreciations run the risk of lowering actual and expected inflation, squeezing corporate profits, generating a negative wealth effect through depressed equity prices, and reducing confidence in the Bank of Japan’s efforts to reflate the domestic economy and achieve the inflation target. This paper takes a closer look at underlying drivers of rapid yen appreciations, highlighting the key role of carry-trade and the zero lower bound as important amplifiers.
Book Synopsis Japanese Effective Exchange Rates and Determinants by : Mr.Jun Nagayasu
Download or read book Japanese Effective Exchange Rates and Determinants written by Mr.Jun Nagayasu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper empirically analyzes Japanese long-run exchange rates from several perspectives. Several exchange rate models are considered, including the purchasing power parity, the real interest differential model, and the hybrid models à la Hooper and Morton (1982). A notable feature of the latter models is that the current accounts are introduced as determinants of the exchange rates; one type of hybrid model uses the actual current account, and the other the optimal current account, which is calculated using the present value model suggested by Campbell and Shiller (1988). The paper finds that the long-run specification is sensitive to the specification of the model.
Book Synopsis The Japanese Yen as an International Currency by : Mr.George S. Tavlas
Download or read book The Japanese Yen as an International Currency written by Mr.George S. Tavlas and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the Japanese yen as an international currency is assessed. It is found that the determinants of international-currency use imply some increase for the yen’s use in international finance; however, the implications for the yen’s use in international trade are mixed. It is also shown that, despite Japan’s emergence as the world’s largest net creditor nation, Japan’s capital outflows have not significantly facilitated the yen’s internationalization. Data are presented showing that, although the yen’s use as an international currency has increased, it is still rather modest. Wider use of the yen as a regional currency in Asia has occurred, though a “yen-zone” does not appear to be emerging.
Book Synopsis The Intra-daily Exchange Rate Dynamics and Monetary Policies After the G5 Agreement by : Takatoshi Ito
Download or read book The Intra-daily Exchange Rate Dynamics and Monetary Policies After the G5 Agreement written by Takatoshi Ito and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates determinants of yen appreciation from the G5 agreement of September 1985 to the end of May, 1986. During that period, four waves of appreciation separated by calm periods are identified. For each wave and calm period, the changes in the yen/dollar exchange rate are decomposed in those taken place in the Tokyo, Europe and New York markets. In addition, correlations among the yen, mark, and pound for each market for each wave are studied. The surprisingly strong effect of the G5 agreement on the exchange rate was due to the signaled U.S. policy change. The role of direct intervention by the Bank of Japan was rather limited at that point. The Bank of Japan, adopted the "high interest policy" in October 1985. By narrowing the interest rate gap between Japan and the United States, the Bank of Japan successfully led to another round of appreciation. A major cause of the third wave of yen appreciation starting January 24, 1986 was the decline in oil prices. After the third wave was over, the Bank of Japan started intervening the market in support of the dollar -- a reversal of direction. However, the effort was not successful to stop another round of yen appreciation. The fourth wave of appreciation in the middle of April was due to a mix of prospects of reducing the U.S. federal deficits and a further decline in oil prices. These findings are consistent with a view that the exchange rates respond mainly to news of fundamentals and that the exchange rates are not manageable by coordinated interventions alone.

Book Synopsis Some Evidenceon Exchange Rate Determination in Major Industrial Countries by : Mr.R. B. Johnston
Download or read book Some Evidenceon Exchange Rate Determination in Major Industrial Countries written by Mr.R. B. Johnston and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the role of long-run monetary and cyclical factors in determining exchange rate movements. Results of empirical study using a data set that includes Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States support the view that exchange rate movements can be explained by the efficient or rational adjustment of foreign exchange markets to economic fundamentals. In the long run, the exchange rate is determined consistent with a monetary approach to exchange rates, while cyclical factors have an impact on short-run exchange rate dynamics. Estimated equations outperform random walk models of exchange rates.
