Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swedenborg's Doctrine of Correspondence: A Key to the Intercourse Between the Soul and Body This essay is in fulfilment of the author's promise to set forth the doctrine of Swed enborg in some of its bearings on Christian Science and Metaphysical healing. It is hoped also that it may incite to further and fuller study of a subject that is exhaustless, and which in the otherwise abundant litera ture of the New Church has not so far received proportionate treatment. Above all, the writ er indulges a hope that it may prove to those who are interested in these high themes, and who have had their eyes turned expect antly to the writings of Swedenborg, some thing of a guide and guard against error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a Philosophical Argument on the Infinite: And the Final Cause of Creation; And on the Intercourse Between the Soul and the Body The following Work was originally published by Swedenborg in Latin in 1734, at Dresden and Leipsic, together, as it appears, with the Opera Philosophica et Mineralia of which the Principle, forms the first volume. It seems to have been written after the Principia, at least if we may judge from the circumstance of the latter being referred to several times in these Outlines. Besides which, the Doctrine of the Soul is carried out in the latter into many more details than in the Principia. In the Acta Eruditorum for 1735, pp. 556 559, the present Work is reviewed, but no positive opinion is expressed of its merits, although the critic hints that it has a materialistic tendency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spirit Mates, Their Origin and Destiny: Sex-Life, Marriage, Divorce Human bodies, however symmetrically formed and carefully guarded, die because organized structures. Earth to earth is nature's fixed fiat. The dwellers in Thebes and Memphis honored those who skilfully embalmed their bodies. They shrunk from discarding like cast-ofi garments their physical organizations. It matters not just now whether a human body came up from the lower things that creep and crawl or through the wild beasts that howl and prowl by night; it is not only beautiful, but there is engrafted into it mentality, conscious spirituality, and we believe, with out a doubt, immortality. Bodies from dust, spirits from God, are the voices of involution and evolution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a largely unknown type of popular print culture that developed in the late 1600s-the coffee house periodical-Helen Berry here offers new evidence that the politics of gender, far from being a marginal or frivolous topic, was an issue of general interest and wide-spread concern to the early modern reader. Berry's study provides the first full length analysis of John Dunton's Athenian Mercury (1691-97), an influential specimen of the coffee-house periodical genre, as well as the original question-and-answer publication which addressed both men's and women's issues in one journal. As the chapter headings in this book indicate, the topics addressed in the "agony column" of the Athenian Mercury-for example, the body, courtship, and sex-are of enduring interest across the centuries. Berry's study of this periodical provides new insights into the gendered ideas and debates that circulated among middling sorts in early modern England. An historical survey of the social effects of mass communication in the early modern period, this volume makes an important contribution to the ongoing study of how gendered ideas and values were communicated culturally, particularly beyond the milieu of elite groups such as the nobility and gentry. It argues that the mass media was from its infancy an important means of communicating powerful messages about gender norms, particularly among the middling sorts. The study will appeal not only to historians, women and gender studies scholars and literature scholars, but also to scholars of publishing history.

Book excerpt: A collection of writings by a groundbreaking political thinker, including excerpts from The Origins of Totalitarianism and Eichmann in Jerusalem She was a Jew born in Germany in the early twentieth century, and she studied with the greatest German minds of her day—Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers among them. After the rise of the Nazis, she emigrated to America where she proceeded to write some of the most searching, hard-hitting reflections on the agonizing issues of the time: totalitarianism in both Nazi and Stalinist garb; Zionism and the legacy of the Holocaust; federally mandated school desegregation and civil rights in the United States; and the nature of evil. The Portable Hannah Arendt offers substantial excerpts from the three works that ensured her international and enduring stature: The Origins of Totalitarianism, The Human Condition, and Eichmann in Jerusalem. Additionally, this volume includes several other provocative essays, as well as her correspondence with other influential figures.

Book excerpt: Some facets of these plays explored in this study include the asymmetry of gender; the representation of gender as natural and universal or as discursively constructed; the reinforcement or subversion of traditional gender traits, gender principles, and gender structures; and the relationship of sex, gender, and sexuality, terms too often conflated in postmodern and early modern parlance.
