Book excerpt: Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations III is a refereed journal issue that explores the applications, theory, and/or applied methods related to hyperbolic partial differential equations, or problems arising out of hyperbolic partial differential equations, in any area of research. This journal issue is interested in all types of articles in terms of review, mini-monograph, standard study, or short communication. Some studies presented in this journal include discretization of ideal fluid dynamics in the Eulerian representation; a Riemann problem in gas dynamics with bifurcation; periodic McKendrick equations for age-structured population growth; and logistic models of structured population growth. A number of book reviews are also included. This journal provides an interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of results not included in other particular journals, and thus will be beneficial to those interested in this field of study.

Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws by : LEVEQUE
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws written by LEVEQUE and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes developed from a course on the numerical solution of conservation laws first taught at the University of Washington in the fall of 1988 and then at ETH during the following spring. The overall emphasis is on studying the mathematical tools that are essential in de veloping, analyzing, and successfully using numerical methods for nonlinear systems of conservation laws, particularly for problems involving shock waves. A reasonable un derstanding of the mathematical structure of these equations and their solutions is first required, and Part I of these notes deals with this theory. Part II deals more directly with numerical methods, again with the emphasis on general tools that are of broad use. I have stressed the underlying ideas used in various classes of methods rather than present ing the most sophisticated methods in great detail. My aim was to provide a sufficient background that students could then approach the current research literature with the necessary tools and understanding. vVithout the wonders of TeX and LaTeX, these notes would never have been put together. The professional-looking results perhaps obscure the fact that these are indeed lecture notes. Some sections have been reworked several times by now, but others are still preliminary. I can only hope that the errors are not too blatant. Moreover, the breadth and depth of coverage was limited by the length of these courses, and some parts are rather sketchy.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major achievements in computational fluid dynamics has been the development of numerical methods for simulating compressible flows, combining higher-order accuracy in smooth regions with a sharp, oscillation-free representation of embedded shocks methods and now known as "high-resolution schemes". Together with introductions from the editors written from the modern vantage point this volume collects in one place many of the most significant papers in the development of high-resolution schemes as occured at ICASE.

Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws by : Philippe G. LeFloch
Download or read book Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws written by Philippe G. LeFloch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the well-posedness theory for nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, recently completed by the author together with his collaborators. It covers the existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence of classical entropy solutions. It also introduces the reader to the developing theory of nonclassical (undercompressive) entropy solutions. The systems of partial differential equations under consideration arise in many areas of continuum physics.
Book Synopsis Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 (In 2 Volumes) by : Mohamed M Hafez
Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 (In 2 Volumes) written by Mohamed M Hafez and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-11-20 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of CFD Review was published in 1995. The purpose of this new publication is to present comprehensive surveys and review articles which provide up-to-date information about recent progress in computational fluid dynamics, on a regular basis. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of CFD, it is difficult to cope with all the important developments in related areas. There are at least ten regular international conferences dealing with different aspects of CFD.It is a real challenge to keep up with all these activities and to be aware of essential and fundamental contributions in these areas. It is hoped that CFD Review will help in this regard by covering the state-of-the-art in this field. The present book contains sixty-two articles written by authors from the US, Europe, Japan and China, covering the main aspects of CFD. There are five sections: general topics, numerical methods, flow physics, interdisciplinary applications, parallel computation and flow visualization. The section on numerical methods includes grids, schemes and solvers, while that on flow physics includes incompressible and compressible flows, hypersonics and gas kinetics as well as transition and turbulence. This book should be useful to all researchers in this fast-developing field.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Conservation Laws and Applications by : Alberto Bressan
Download or read book Nonlinear Conservation Laws and Applications written by Alberto Bressan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Summer Program on Nonlinear Conservation Laws and Applications held at the IMA on July 13--31, 2009. Hyperbolic conservation laws is a classical subject, which has experienced vigorous growth in recent years. The present collection provides a timely survey of the state of the art in this exciting field, and a comprehensive outlook on open problems. Contributions of more theoretical nature cover the following topics: global existence and uniqueness theory of one-dimensional systems, multidimensional conservation laws in several space variables and approximations of their solutions, mathematical analysis of fluid motion, stability and dynamics of viscous shock waves, singular limits for viscous systems, basic principles in the modeling of turbulent mixing, transonic flows past an obstacle and a fluid dynamic approach for isometric embedding in geometry, models of nonlinear elasticity, the Monge problem, and transport equations with rough coefficients. In addition, there are a number of papers devoted to applications. These include: models of blood flow, self-gravitating compressible fluids, granular flow, charge transport in fluids, and the modeling and control of traffic flow on networks.
Book Synopsis Splitting Methods for Partial Differential Equations with Rough Solutions by : Helge Holden
Download or read book Splitting Methods for Partial Differential Equations with Rough Solutions written by Helge Holden and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2010 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operator splitting (or the fractional steps method) is a very common tool to analyze nonlinear partial differential equations both numerically and analytically. By applying operator splitting to a complicated model one can often split it into simpler problems that can be analyzed separately. In this book one studies operator splitting for a family of nonlinear evolution equations, including hyperbolic conservation laws and degenerate convection-diffusion equations. Common for these equations is the prevalence of rough, or non-smooth, solutions, e.g., shocks. Rigorous analysis is presented, showing that both semi-discrete and fully discrete splitting methods converge. For conservation laws, sharp error estimates are provided and for convection-diffusion equations one discusses a priori and a posteriori correction of entropy errors introduced by the splitting. Numerical methods include finite difference and finite volume methods as well as front tracking. The theory is illustrated by numerous examples. There is a dedicated Web page that provides MATLABR codes for many of the examples. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in pure and applied mathematics, physics, and engineering.
