Book excerpt: Homogenous groups are part of the theories of Lie groups, algebraic groups and topological groups. A homogeneous space for a group G is a non-empty manifold or topological space X on which G acts transitively. The elements of G are known as the symmetries of X. When the group G in question is the automorphism group of the space X, a special case arises. An isometry group, diffeomorphism group or a homeomorphism group can be called an automorphism group. In this case, X is homogeneous if naturally X looks locally identical at each point, either in the sense of isometry, diffeomorphism or homeomorphism. Thus there is a group action of G on X which can be thought of as preserving some geometric structure on X, and making X into a single G-orbit. This book outlines the processes and applications of homogenous groups in detail. It presents this complex subject in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. This textbook will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and post graduate students.

In order to reduce the complexity of certain models, one will sometimes restrict attention to the so called order parameter field. The order parameter field can take many different forms depending on the physical system to be modeled. We can look at the topological characteristics of the order parameter space to model what has become known as topological phases of these systems. The aspect of physical systems we will focus on here is topological excitations, also known as topological defects. These defects are often classified by the homotopy groups of the associated order parameter manifold M, with the nth homotopy group of M, [pi][subscript]n(M), describing the n-dimensional defects. These homotopy groups give all the possible defects that can occur in a given dimension, as well as how the defects can interact with each other. Furthermore, the action of the fundamental group of M on the homotopy group [pi][subscript]n(M) tells how a one-dimensional defect acts on a n-dimensional defect. This information is given by the Abe homotopy group of the order parameter manifold. We look to describe the Abe homotopy groups associated to some interesting physical cases and expand the results to a simplification of the computation of the Abe homotopy groups of all connected homogeneous spaces.

Book excerpt: From the reviews: "..., the book must be of great help for a researcher who already has some idea of Lie theory, wants to employ it in his everyday research and/or teaching, and needs a source for customary reference on the subject. From my viewpoint, the volume is perfectly fit to serve as such a source, ... On the whole, it is quite a pleasure, after making yourself comfortable in that favourite office armchair of yours, just to keep the volume gently in your hands and browse it slowly and thoughtfully; and after all, what more on Earth can one expect of any book?" --The New Zealand Mathematical Society Newsletter

As an application, it classifys compact generalized quadrangles (buildings of type $C_2)$ which admit a point transitive automorphism group, and isoparametric hypersurfaces which admit a transitive isometry group on one f

Book excerpt: In the past thirty years, differential geometry has undergone an enormous change with infusion of topology, Lie theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry and partial differential equations. Professor Matsushima played a leading role in this transformation by bringing new techniques of Lie groups and Lie algebras into the study of real and complex manifolds. This volume is a collection of all the 46 papers written by him.

It analyzes the structure of compact Lie groups in terms of the action of the group on itself by conjugation, culminating in the classification of the representations of compact Lie groups and their realization as sections of holomorphic line bundles over flag manifolds. Appendices provide background reviews.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to give an overview of some recent developments in differential geometry related to supersymmetric field theories. The main themes covered are: Special geometry and supersymmetry Generalized geometry Geometries with torsion Para-geometries Holonomy theory Symmetric spaces and spaces of constant curvature Conformal geometry Wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds D-branes and K-theory The intended audience consists of advanced students and researchers working in differential geometry, string theory, and related areas. The emphasis is on geometrical structures occurring on target spaces of supersymmetric field theories. Some of these structures can be fully described in the classical framework of pseudo-Riemannian geometry. Others lead to new concepts relating various fields of research, such as special Kahler geometry or generalized geometry.

Book excerpt: This volume contains articles written by the invited speakers and workshop participants from the conference on "Crystallographic Groups and Their Generalizations", held at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Kortrijk (Belgium). Presented are recent developments and open problems. Topics include the theory of affine structures and polynomial structures, affine Schottky groups and crooked tilings, theory and problems on the geometry of finitely generated solvable groups, flat Lorentz 3-manifolds and Fuchsian groups, filiform Lie algebras, hyperbolic automorphisms and Anosov diffeomorphisms on infra-nilmanifolds, localization theory of virtually nilpotent groups and aspherical spaces, projective varieties, and results on affine appartment systems. Participants delivered high-level research mathematics and a discussion was held forum for new researchers. The survey results and original papers contained in this volume offer a comprehensive view of current developments in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fme subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
