Book excerpt: This proceedings volume contains over 300 papers on rock mechanics and engineering with contributors from all over Asia and many other parts of the world. Seven keynote papers summarize the state-of-the-art in rock engineering including topics such as underground rock caverns. The technical papers cover a wide range of rock mechanics and engineering topics: rock tunnels, caverns, mining, rock slopes and dams, rock blasting, rock burst and failure, rock properties, rock mass, rock joints, and block theory. Numerous valuable rock engineering case studies are also reported. This volume should serve as a useful reference for the engineers and researchers in rock mechanics and rock engineering.

Book excerpt: The primary aim of this monograph is to present the current knowledge of brittle properties of rocks as determined in laboratory experiments. The principal aspects of brittle behavior are described with special attention to the fundamental physical aspects. Thus, the book provides a useful introduction to the basics of rock properties for engineering and earth science applications. Furthermore, it serves as a guide for graduate students and non specialists by presenting the relevant background material and where it can be found. For the new edition a further chapter has been added, and almost half of the chapters have been extensively revised and the others updated.

Book excerpt: Knowledge of the mechanical properties of rocks at high pressure and temperature is fundamental not only for material science but also for earth science, such as for solving the mechanism of earthquakes and tectonic processes. For example, physical bases of the earthquake prediction based on the rock mechanics have been proposed, and extensive seismological, geophysical and geochemical observations have been conducted to find precursory phenomena before large earthquakes. However, we cannot help telling for the present that we do not have sufficient knowledge of an effective and reliable method for earthquake prediction. The book is mainly concerned with comprehensive source of information on the mechanical properties and behavior of rocks under high pressure that scans current state-of-the-art knowledge and shows contribution in establishing an experimental basis for the understanding of the mechanism of rock deformation in the earth's interior. The book can be used as textbook for graduate students by university teachers to prepare courses and seminars, and for active scientists and engineers who want to become familiar with a fascinating new field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 16 (The Griggs Volume). David Tressel Griggs was born October 6, 1911, in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were Robert Fiske and Laura Amelia Tressel Griggs. His father was a widely known professor of botany and a leading ecologist and environmental conservationist at a time when these viewpoints were less familiar than they are today. David was an undergraduate at Ohio State University in 1930 when he participated in a National Geographic Society expedition, led by his father, to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This Alaskan experience and the encouragement he received from a gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Professor Edmund M. Spieker, led him to choose for his life work the application of physics to the problems of the earth. After a year of graduate studies in geology at Ohio State, David moved on in 1933 to Harvard, where a new progTam of high-pressure studies devoted to geophysical problems had just been initiated under the inspired guidance of Percy W. Bridgman, pre-eminent leader in the experimental exploration of the physics of very high pressures and in the philosophical analysis of the logical processes of scientific thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.
