Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a mobile, wireless network that does not necessitate a pre-existing infrastructure. The routing infrastructure needs to be established in a distributed, self-organized way. Many routing protocols for MANETs have been proposed, and some evaluating work has been conducted. The large number of the proposed routing protocols and evaluations makes it difficult to keep track of the development and to get an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of routing protocols. The author Daniel Lang analyses evaluation techniques from the past and describes common problems with simulation based evaluation of routing protocols for MANETs and how to resolve them. Simulation scenarios are examined and evaluated, sample applications are suggested and relations to past and present evaluations are drawn. A comprehensive number of MANET routing protocols is examined and categorized and similarities are deduced and presented. It is proposed that these can be used to reduce the number of experiments. This book is targeted at scientists and institutions conducting research about or pursuing the implementation of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Research into routing protocol development for mobile ad hoc networks has been a significant undertaking since the late 1990's. Secure routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks provide the necessary functionality for proper network operation. If the underlying routing protocol cannot be trusted to follow the protocol operations, additional trust layers cannot be obtained. For instance, authentication between nodes is meaningless without a trusted underlying route.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are of much interest to both the research community and the military because of the potential to establish a communication network in any situation that involves emergencies. Examples are search-and-rescue operations, military deployment in hostile environment, and several types of police operations. One critical open issue is how to route messages considering the characteristics of these networks. The nodes act as routers in an environment without a fixed infrastructure, the nodes are mobile, the wireless medium has its own limitations compared to wired networks, and existing routing protocols cannot be employed at least without modifications. Over the last few years, a number of routing protocols have been proposed and enhanced to solve routing in MANETs. It is not clear how those different protocols perform under different environments. One protocol may be the best in one network configuration but the worst in another. This thesis describes a study of those protocols that are best from a DoD perspective. These wireless mobile networks were simulated under different mobility and traffic scenarios to evaluate their performance. The results showed which protocols performed better under several relevant scenarios and exposed a number of design flaws.

This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, many researchers have become interested in MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks) to create a self-configurable network without an existing communication infrastructure. This type of networks could be widely deployed in our society for inter-vehicle communication, rescue operations or entertaining applications. One of the most important points in a MANET is to decide the best routing protocol to handle its applications. The performances of a routing protocol are strongly connected with the environmental characteristics making its choice a challenging task. In this research, the results of a detailed performance evaluation on several MANET routing protocols working under realistic environments are presented. The routing protocols, mobility models and other aspects are explained and discussed in order to accurately use them to represent real-life conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation presents an in-depth study of mobile routing protocols, particularly mobile collection protocols through a literature study, a theoretical model, and thorough experimental studies both in simulation and testbeds. A mobile collection service provides data delivery from stationary source nodes to a mobile user (or a sink) over multihop networks. One of the main contributions of this dissertation research is the Whirlpool Adhoc Routing Protocol (WARP), which efficiently routes data to a mobile destination within a static network. The key insight in WARP's design is that, when a destination moves, data traffic can use the existing topology to efficiently probe, repair, and communicate changes with the few control packets. Using simulation, controlled testbeds, and real mobility experiments, we find that using the data plane, rather than control plane, is highly effective due to the incremental nature of mobility updates. WARP leverages the fact that converging flows at the destination makes it the region of highest traffic. The dissertation also provides a theoretical basis for WARPs behavior, defining an update area where the topology must adjust when a destination moves. As long as packets arrive at a destination before it moves outside of the update area, WARP can repair the topology with the data plane.
