Nanoparticle technology plays an important role in the implementation of nanotechnology in many engineering and industrial fields including electronic devices, advanced ceramics, new batteries, engineered catalysts, functional paint and ink, Drug Delivery System, biotechnology, etc.; and makes use of the unique properties of the nanoparticles which are completely different from those of the bulk materials. This new handbook is the first to explain complete aspects of nanoparticles with many application examples showing their advantages and advanced development. There are handbooks which briefly mention the nanosized particles or their related applications, but no handbook describing the complete aspects of nanoparticles has been published so far.The handbook elucidates of the basic properties of nanoparticles and various nanostructural materials with their characterisation methods in the first part. It also introduces more than 40 examples of practical and potential uses of nanoparticles in the later part dealing with applications. It is intended to give readers a clear picture of nanoparticles as well as new ideas or hints on their applications to create new materials or to improve the performance of the advanced functional materials developed with the nanoparticles.* Introduces all aspects of nanoparticle technology, from the fundamentals to applications.* Includes basic information on the preparation through to the characterization of nanoparticles from various viewpoints * Includes information on nanostructures, which play an important role in practical applications.
Book Synopsis Structures and Dynamics of Asphaltenes by : Oliver C. Mullins
Download or read book Structures and Dynamics of Asphaltenes written by Oliver C. Mullins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigative assault upon the enigmatic asphaltenes has recently resulted in sig nificant advances in many varied disciplines. Taken individually, each discipline exposes certain facets of asphaltenes, but each, alone, can never reveal asphaltenes from all van tages. Even seemingly narrowly focused issues such as the molecular structures of asphal tenes, or the colloidal structures of asphaltenes require a confluence of many lines of investigation to yield an understanding which differs from truth by diminishing uncer tainty. An holistic treatment of the asphaltenes is a powerful approach to evolve further their understanding. For example, examination of asphaltenes at the highest resolution yields molecular structure. A slight increase in scale probes asphaltene colloidal structure. Weaving together asphaltene studies performed at different length scales results in a fabric which envelops an encompassing vision of asphaltenes. At the same time, the interfaces of these hierarchical studies provide additional constraints on imagination, more than investi gations at individual length scales alone. These considerations shaped the timing, format, and the content of our book. The editors are very appreciative of the diligence and hard work manifest in each of the contributed chapters herein. We thank the contributing authors for making this project a success. Oliver C. Mullins Eric Y. Sheu vii CONTENTS I. Asphaltenes: Types and Sources ...................................... .
Book Synopsis Surface Tension in Microsystems by : Pierre Lambert
Download or read book Surface Tension in Microsystems written by Pierre Lambert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how surface tension effects can be used by engineers to provide mechanical functions in miniaturized products (1 mm). Even if precursors of this field such as Jurin or Laplace already date back to the 18th century, describing surface tension effects from a mechanical perspective is very recent.brThe originality of this book is to consider the effects of capillary bridges on solids, including forces and torques exerted both statically and dynamically by the liquid along the 6 degrees-of-freedom.brIt provides a comprehensive approach to various applications, such as capillary adhesion (axial force), centering force in packaging and micro-assembly (lateral force) and recent developments such as a capillary motor (torque).
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Applied Electrostatics by : Joseph M. Crowley
Download or read book Fundamentals of Applied Electrostatics written by Joseph M. Crowley and published by Laplacian Press Series on Elec. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explains, in engineering rather than mathematical terms, the application of electrostatic principles for designing practical devices. Each chapter concentrates on a single electrostatic concept with applications to a particular device. Now in its third printing, the text is organized by the scale of electrostatic effect. Part Four describes interactions between electrostatic devices and external circuits using terminal relations. In addition to providing a unified and comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals and applications of electrostatics, the author offers numerous examples, including copy machines, smoke detectors, high-speed printers, and the electrofusion of living cells. The epilogue provides more applications in various industries, plus bibliographies and review articles.

Book Synopsis Continuum Electromechanics by : James R. Melcher
Download or read book Continuum Electromechanics written by James R. Melcher and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1981-01 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to be used as a graduate-level text and as an engineering reference work, "Continuum Electromechanics" presents a comprehensive development of its subject--the interaction of electromagnetic forces and ponderable media, the mechanical responses to electromagnetic fields, and the reciprocal effects of the material motions produced by those fields. The author's approach is highly interdisciplinary, and he introduces fundamental concepts from such subjects as electrohydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, electron beam engineering, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and physical chemistry. The applications of continuum electromechanics are also remarkably diverse, and many of them are treated in the book, both because of their intrinsic engineering importance and as a means of illustrating basic principles. Among these applications are the design of rotating machines and synchronous generators, polymer processing, magnetic melting and pumping in metallurgical operations, the processing of plastics and glass, the manufacture of synthetic fibers, inductive and dielectric heating, thermal-to-electrical energy conversion, the control of air pollution, the design of controlled-fusion devices, image processing and printing, the magnetic levitation and propulsion of vehicles, the study of films and membranes, and the analysis of the complex electrokinetic and physicochemical processes that underlie the sensing and motor functions of biological systems. Many of these applications are presented in the form of problems. The book consists of eleven chapters, entitled Introduction to Continuum Electromechanics; Electrodynamic Laws; Approximations, and Relations; Electromagnetic Forces, Force Densities, and Stress Tensors; Electromechanical Kinematics; Energy-Conversion Models and Processes; Charge Migration, Convection, and Relaxation; Magnetic Diffusion and Induction Interactions; Laws, Approximations, and Relations of Fluid Mechanics Statics and Dynamics of Systems Having a Static Equilibrium; Electromechanical Flows; Electromechanics with Thermal and Molecular Diffusion; and Streaming Interactions.
