Book excerpt: Edge of Eternity is the epic, final novel in Ken Follett's captivating and hugely ambitious Century trilogy. On its own or read in sequence with Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, this is an irresistible and spellbinding epic about the fight for personal freedom set during the Cold War. A Fight Against Injustice 1961, and in the United States George Jakes, a bright young lawyer in the Kennedy administration and fierce supporter of the civil rights movement, boards a Greyhound bus in Washington with Verena, an employee of Martin Luther King whom he is in love with, to protest against segregation. A Rising Tide of Danger In East Germany, teacher Rebecca Hoffmann finds her entire life has been a lie as she is targeted by the secret police, even as her younger brother, Walli, dreams of escape across the Berlin Wall to Britain. In Russia, activist Tania Dvorkin narrowly evades capture for producing an illegal news-sheet, her actions all the more perilous because her brother, Dimka, is an emerging star of the Communist Party. A Cold War That Could Eliminate the World Forever In a sweeping tale that began in 1911, the descendants of five families will now find their true destiny as they fight for their individual freedom in a world facing the mightiest clash of superpowers it has ever seen.

Book excerpt: It is commonly assumed that the creation story of Genesis and its chronology were the only narratives openly available in medieval and early modern Europe and that the discovery of geological time in the eighteenth century came as a momentous breakthrough that shook the faith in the historical accuracy of the Bible. Historians of science, mainstream geologists, and Young Earth creationists alike all share the assumption that the notion of an ancient Earth was highly heterodox in the pre-modern era. The old age of the world is regarded as the offspring of a secularized science. In this book, Ivano Dal Prete radically revises the commonplace history of deep time in Western culture. He argues that the chronology of the Bible always coexisted with alternative approaches that placed the origin of the Earth into a far, undetermined (or even eternal) past. From the late Middle Ages, these notions spread freely not only in universities and among the learned, but even in popular works of meteorology, geology, literature, and art that made them easily accessible to a vernacular and scientifically illiterate public. Religious authorities did not regard these notions as particularly problematic, let alone heretical. Neither the authors nor their numerous readers thought that holding such views was incompatible with their Christian faith. While the appeal of theories centered on the biblical Flood and on a young Earth gained popularity over the course of the seventeenth century, their more secular alternatives remained vital and debated. Enlightenment thinkers, however, created a myth of a Christian tradition that uniformly rejected the antiquity of the world, as opposed to a new secular science ready to welcome it. Largely unchallenged for almost three centuries, that account solidified over time into a still dominant truism. Based on a wealth of mostly unexplored sources, On the Edge of Eternity offers an original and nuanced account of the history of deep time that illuminates the relationship between the history of science and Christianity in the medieval and early modern periods, with lasting implications for Western society.

Book excerpt: This is a biography of G. Christopher Willis, a Canadian missionary to China from 1921-1949. His Christian literature publishing and distribution was the last Protestant missionary work in China after the Communist takeover, continuing for another ten years under Communist rule. At a time when the church in China entered a period of prolonged spiritual famine, there remained a storehouse of Christian literature to feed the hungry and build up spiritual leaders, enabling them to faithfully feed their flocks. Today the church in China is the single most powerful witness of New Testament Christianity, standing as a witness to the Western church as it flounders in materialism and liberalism. This book is also a study of spiritual fruitfulness, using the biography as a case study to understand Jesus' words "Unless a grain of wheat" and their practical meaning in daily life. There is a way forward for a floundering Western church, to follow along the narrow path that Jesus has called it to walk.

Book excerpt: Did the cross of Calvary truly remove every form of the curse? Did Jesus really make everything right for those who put their trust in Him? Or do we await another day when God will add to the work of the cross in order to complete our salvation? The truth contained in this treatise is the simplest of all truths. This book is not a study on the mysterious depths of the gospel, but rather, on the foundational principles upon which the church is to be built. Although foundational, the truth contained herein is one in which the church at large is unfamiliar. Though simple, this truth is simply profound and contains power to bring forth a new and radical perspective. This new perspective contains the ability to connect the believer to supernatural possibilities. This radical perspective of which I speak is a simple and honest look at the redemptive work of the cross. Could it be that Jesus' death, resurrection, and seating at the Father’s right hand has totally and completely rectified the human condition? Is it possible that as believers, we can experience and enjoy the bountiful and unlimited blessings of heaven by merely agreeing with what the Father has already accomplished through His Son? It has often been said that every believer has a right to be blessed, healed, favored, etc. The truth is, we have far more than a mere right to these blessings. We have Jesus' Right which guarantees that these blessings are not only ours, but they are irrevocably ours. Because of the redemptive work of Calvary, every believer is as much in the right with the Father as Jesus Himself. The moment we believe in Jesus, His righteousness is accredited to our account! Thus, Jesus' Right is NOW upon us! Truly, there has been a great exchange . . . He has taken all of our wrong and given us all of His RIGHT.

Book excerpt: You are not alone. Our story, like yours, is a story of the faithfulness of Jesus throughout the tapestry of our lives. From circumstances that seem so trivial that they go unnoticed to the devastating situations that shake our very existence, the one thing that we can know for certain is that faithful Jesus is always working and will never leave you or forsake you. Ours is a story where the doctors told us of the impossibilities, but through one miracle after another Jesus remained faithful to His Word. If you need to be encouraged, if you need hope restored, if you need a reminder of the faithfulness of Jesus in your life, this book was written for you. “Broken Healer is an unusual autobiography—written not in one voice, but two, giving the book a dual perspective that greatly enriches the story. Dan’s accident may have turned their world upside down, but Dan and Miriam’s faith in Jesus, their broken healer, is an inspiration to everyone who knows them. Their willingness to share the dark places of their brokenness with openness and honesty is to be admired and should be a source of encouragement to all who read this book.” —Gloria Kearney, author of Sing in the Shadow and Kingdom Park

Among those who were beginning to wonder how they could endure all of this was Julia Claiborne, who held great concern for her family and almost daily had to fight off the fear of losing that which had become a big part of herself--their beloved, ancestral plantation, Beulah Land.

Book excerpt: A biographical encyclopedia of American and British Christian-themed writers from World War II to the present, covering acclaimed literary works and popular evangelical fiction. Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Fiction: From C.S. Lewis to Left Behind spans the entire breadth of Christian-themed British and American writing from World War II to the present—well-known and less familiar authors, acclaimed literary novels, and popular writing in a variety of genres (mysteries, thrillers, romances), works that explore matters of faith, works that challenge orthodoxy and church practices, and works wholly written by and for devout evangelicals. Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Fiction offers 90 alphabetically organized entries covering the field's most important writers. Each entry includes a brief biography, religious and educational background, a survey of major works and themes, and a summary of critical response, as well as a bibliography of major works and criticism. By examining evocative, sometimes overlooked Christian elements in modern fiction, and by exploring the depth and scope of popular evangelical fiction, Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Fiction offers the richest, most complete portrait of the role of faith in modern English writing ever published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ken Follett wrote his first international bestseller, Eye of the Needle, when he was 25 years old. He has since been one of the most consistent international best-selling authors, with approximately 130 million copies of his books sold worldwide. His manifold influences on the thriller genre includes the pioneering use of strong female characters in espionage stories and the development of the historical thriller as a new form of novel, exemplified by Winter of the World (2012). This book is an investigation of Follett’s development as an author, and of the craft of writing and the negotiation of serious versus popular literary value, from his earliest short stories and screenplays through his mature thrillers and entertainment fiction. Unpublished materials are also considered, including his notes, business and personal correspondence, unpublished drafts, journal entries and outlines. Follett’s dramatic shift to writing historical fiction may be his most enduring legacy.
