It was time to select, make hard choices of material, polish, refine, and fill in where needed. Much has been rewritten to be even cleaner and clearer, new features have been introduced, and some peripheral topics have been removed. The authors continue to provide real-world, technical applications that promote intuitive reader learning. Numerous fully worked examples and boxed and numbered formulas give students the essential practice they need to learn mathematics. Computer projects are given when appropriate, including BASIC, spreadsheets, computer algebra systems, and computer-assisted drafting. The graphing calculator has been fully integrated and calculator screens are given to introduce computations. Everything the technical student may need is included, with the emphasis always on clarity and practical applications.

A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

Book excerpt: Algebra and Trigonometry presents the essentials of algebra and trigonometry with some applications. The emphasis is on practical skills, problem solving, and computational techniques. Topics covered range from equations and inequalities to functions and graphs, polynomial and rational functions, and exponentials and logarithms. Trigonometric functions and complex numbers are also considered. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the fundamentals of algebra, each topic explained, illustrated, and accompanied by an ample set of exercises. The proper use of algebraic notation and practical manipulative skills such as factoring, using exponents and radicals, and simplifying rational expressions is highlighted, along with the most common mistakes in algebra. The reader is then introduced to the solution of linear, quadratic, and other types of equations and systems of equations, as well as the solution of inequalities. Subsequent chapters deal with the most basic functions: polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithm, and trigonometric. Trigonometry and the inverse trigonometric functions and identities are also presented. The book concludes with a review of progressions, permutations, combinations, and the binomial theorem. This monograph will be a useful resource for undergraduate students of mathematics and algebra.

Book excerpt: This college level trigonometry text may be different than most other trigonometry textbooks. In this book, the reader is expected to do more than read the book but is expected to study the material in the book by working out examples rather than just reading about them. So the book is not just about mathematical content (although it does contain important topics in trigonometry needed for further study in mathematics), but it is also about the process of learning and doing mathematics and is designed not to be just casually read but rather to be engaged. Recognizing that actively studying a mathematics book is often not easy, several features of the textbook have been designed to help students become more engaged as they study the material. Some of the features are: Beginning activities in each section that engage students with the material to be introduced, focus questions that help students stay focused on what is important in the section, progress checks that are short exercises or activities that replace the standard examples in most textbooks, a section summary, and appendices with answers for the progress checks and selected exercises.

Book excerpt: This volume is a basic introduction to certain aspects of elliptic functions and elliptic integrals. Primarily, the elliptic functions stand out as closed solutions to a class of physical and geometrical problems giving rise to nonlinear differential equations. While these nonlinear equations may not be the types of greatest interest currently, the fact that they are solvable exactly in terms of functions about which much is known makes up for this. The elliptic functions of Jacobi, or equivalently the Weierstrass elliptic functions, inhabit the literature on current problems in condensed matter and statistical physics, on solitons and conformal representations, and all sorts of famous problems in classical mechanics. The lectures on elliptic functions have evolved as part of the first semester of a course on theoretical and mathematical methods given to first and second year graduate students in physics and chemistry at the University of North Dakota. They are for graduate students or for researchers who want an elementary introduction to the subject that nevertheless leaves them with enough of the details to address real problems. The style is supposed to be informal. The intention is to introduce the subject as a moderate extension of ordinary trigonometry in which the reference circle is replaced by an ellipse. This entre depends upon fewer tools and has seemed less intimidating that other typical introductions to the subject that depend on some knowledge of complex variables. The first three lectures assume only calculus, including the chain rule and elementary knowledge of differential equations. In the later lectures, the complex analytic properties are introduced naturally so that a more complete study becomes possible.

Book excerpt: Trigonometry, 4th Edition brings together all the elements that have allowed instructors and learners to successfully "bridge the gap" between classroom instruction and independent homework by overcoming common learning barriers and building confidence in students' ability to do mathematics. Written in a clear voice that speaks to students and mirrors how instructors communicate in lecture, Young's hallmark pedagogy enables students to become independent, successful learners. Varied exercise types and modeling projects keep the learning fresh and motivating. Young continues her tradition of fostering a love for succeeding in mathematics by introducing inquiry-based learning projects in this edition, providing learners an opportunity to master the material with more freedom while reinforcing mathematical skills and intuition.

Book excerpt: The subject of this book is the successive construction and development of the basic number systems of mathematics: positive integers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers. This second edition expands upon the list of suggestions for further reading in Appendix III. From the Preface: ``The present book basically takes for granted the non-constructive set-theoretical foundation of mathematics, which is tacitly if not explicitly accepted by most working mathematicians but which I have since come to reject. Still, whatever one's foundational views, students must be trained in this approach in order to understand modern mathematics. Moreover, most of the material of the present book can be modified so as to be acceptable under alternative constructive and semi-constructive viewpoints, as has been demonstrated in more advanced texts and research articles.''
