Book excerpt: An astonishingly free and frank eyewitness account of corruption, scandal, inefficiency, conspiracy, dishonesty, favouritism, misgovernance, and lack of transparency at the higher echelons of decision-making in the government. Written in a humorous style, the book contains stories of the kind of games played on the corridors of power and in various ministries. While all the major decisions are taken at the level of the ministers in charge and all the misdeeds are committed by the politicians, they conveniently escape responsibility, and the bureaucrats are invariably made the scapegoats. It is an irony of the system that the real culprits are never summoned or hauled up by the Public Accounts Committee. Not being able to withstand the pressure and the fear of brutal reprisals, good bureaucrats also fall in line, and good people start doings bad things. The author always thought he was a misfit in the system. The author looked back at his encounters in the Central Ministries with a sense of pride, a sense of fear, a sense of horror, a sense of helplessness, and a sense of frustration. Being a nonconformist from childhood, he did not agree to compromise with any minister, politician, or seniors on issues of principles and propriety. It became increasingly clear to him that no politician or a bureaucrat was interested in thinking of reforms, doing things for public good, or serving people with patriotic fervour. Greed and power had overtaken almost all politicians, making them arrogant, revengeful, and fearful people and a genre of superior species that had no connection with the common people.

Book excerpt: This is a revised edition of Chinua Achebe (1980), a critical study of the most widely known African writer, which now incorporates a discussion of his most recent work, including his major new novel, Anthills of the Savannah. The study examines the context in which he writes - that complex intermingling of his own Igbo society and European colonialism - before undertaking a critical discussion of the five main novels, his poetry and short stories. Throughout, there is an underlying concern with Achebe's system of values and the pressure on them through periods of colonialism, independence, political disillusionment and civil war. The author, finally, seeks to relate Achebe's career to the role of the African writer, a subject on which the novelist has written at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a guide to contemporary debates and theatre practices at a time when gender paradigms are both in flux and at the centre of explosive political battlegrounds. The confluence of gender and theatre has long created intense debate about representation, identification, social conditioning, desire, embodiment, and lived experience. As this handbook demonstrates, from the conventions of early modern English, Chinese, Japanese and Hispanic theatres to the subversion of racialized binaries of masculinity and femininity in recent North American, African, Asian, Caribbean and European productions, the matter of gender has consistently taken centre stage. This handbook examines how critical discourses on gender intersect with key debates in the field of theatre studies, as a lens to illuminate the practices of gender and theatre as well as the societies they inform and represent across space and time. Of interest to scholars in the interrelated areas of feminist, gender and sexuality studies, theatre and performance studies, cultural studies, and globalization and diasporic studies, this book demonstrates how researchers are currently addressing theatre about gender issues and gendered theatre practices. While synthesizing and summarizing foundational and evolving debates from a contemporary perspective, this collection offers interpretations and analyses that do not simply look back at existing scholarship, but open up new possibilities and understandings. Featuring essential research tools, including a survey of keywords and an annotated play list, this is an indispensable scholarly handbook for anyone working in theatre and performance.

Book excerpt: From Shakespeare to cop shows, sitcoms to docudramas, for over three decades the CBC has presented viewers with every variety of television drama and has become Canada's closest equivalent to a national theatre. Turn Up the Contrast is the first book to explore the content of Canadian television drama and is both a critical analysis and a survey history of how Canadians have used the medium to tell themselves their own stories. As a part of her research, Mary Jane Miller watched thousands of hours of television, sampling series and viewing in their entirety shorter programs such as movies and mini-series. Asking a variety of questions, she selected a number of programs for detailed analysis, and devotees of The Beachcombers, King of Kensington, Seeing Things, Cariboo Country, Wojeck or A Gift to Last will be pleased to find their favourites among those discussed at length.
