In a media landscape dominated by such gamers, players who do not fit this mold, including women, people of color, and LGBT people, are often brutalized in forums and in public channels in online play. Discussion of representation of such groups in games has frequently been limited and cursory. In contrast, Gaming at the Edge builds on feminist, queer, and postcolonial theories of identity and draws on qualitative audience research methods to make sense of how representation comes to matter. In Gaming at the Edge, Adrienne Shaw argues that video game players experience race, gender, and sexuality concurrently. She asks: How do players identify with characters? How do they separate identification and interactivity? What is the role of fantasy in representation? What is the importance of understanding market logic? In addressing these questions Shaw reveals how representation comes to matter to participants and offers a perceptive consideration of the high stakes in politics of representation debates. Stories abound of scholars--despite impressive records of publication, excellent teaching evaluations, and exemplary service to their universities--struggling on the tenure track. These stories, however, are rarely shared for public consumption. Written/Unwritten reveals that faculty of color often face two sets of rules when applying for reappointment, tenure, and promotion: those made explicit in handbooks and faculty orientations or determined by union contracts and those that operate beneath the surface. It is this second, unwritten set of rules that disproportionally affects faculty who are hired to "diversify" academic departments and then expected to meet ever-shifting requirements set by tenured colleagues and administrators. Three purposes of post-tenure evaluation are identified: to supply documentation for removal for incompetence; to provide input for decisions in the areas of reductions in force, merit raises, and promotions; and especially to support faculty development and improved instruction. Five principles of faculty evaluation are recommended: a clearly defined purpose, multiple sources of input to the evaluation, identifying areas and criteria to be assessed, measurable standards, and a flexible and individualized evaluation plan. Appended is a summary of a survey of 30 institutions, 16 of which had a formal post-tenure evaluation plan. Information is provided on evaluation objectives, effectiveness, frequency, participants, process followed, and the names of the 16 institutions.
