Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Peruvian Guano: Its History, Composition and Fertilizing Qualities; With the Best Mode of Its Application to the Soil That an increase of solubility in bones and other phosphates would be attended by an increased productive power in the crop, was the idea of Liebig. This great chemist, in 1840, recommended, in lieu of bones, the use of the substance long well known to chemists as the acid or super-phosphate of lime, which is producible from bones and other phosphates by the action of sulphuric acid. Practice has since shown the great advantage of Liebig's suggestion. The introduction of the dung of birds and other animals, under the name of "Guano;" and the discovery, in Suffolk and other counties, of immense quantities of fossil bones, and other animal remains, known as "Coprolites," have followed quickly upon each other, and there can be no doubt that by their means an entire revolution will be made in the practice of Agriculture. The concentrated character of most of the genuine artificial manures, particularly adapts them for use in the mountainous and hilly districts of our country, where the carriage of ordinary manure is both difficult and expensive. One waggon may now easily carry enough manure for 15 or 20 acres of turnips. Formerly 15 or 20 loads were required for a single acre. Of all the artificial manures, Peruvian Guano is perhaps not only the most concentrated, but is, from its composition, adapted to the greatest variety of crops. The chief mineral constituents of plants - lime, magnesia, potash, soda, chlorine, sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid, (the latter the most important) are found in Guano. Nitrogen, the most valuable constituent of manures, is found in Peruvian Guano in great abundance, and in a condition well adapted for vegetation. Book Synopsis Diet for a Large Planet by : Chris Otter
Download or read book Diet for a Large Planet written by Chris Otter and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the unsustainable modern diet—heavy in meat, wheat, and sugar—that requires more land and resources than the planet is able to support. We are facing a world food crisis of unparalleled proportions. Our reliance on unsustainable dietary choices and agricultural systems is causing problems both for human health and the health of our planet. Solutions from lab-grown food to vegan diets to strictly local food consumption are often discussed, but a central question remains: how did we get to this point? In Diet for a Large Planet, Chris Otter goes back to the late eighteenth century in Britain, where the diet heavy in meat, wheat, and sugar was developing. As Britain underwent steady growth, urbanization, industrialization, and economic expansion, the nation altered its food choices, shifting away from locally produced plant-based nutrition. This new diet, rich in animal proteins and refined carbohydrates, made people taller and stronger, but it led to new types of health problems. Its production also relied on far greater acreage than Britain itself, forcing the nation to become more dependent on global resources. Otter shows how this issue expands beyond Britain, looking at the global effects of large agro-food systems that require more resources than our planet can sustain. This comprehensive history helps us understand how the British played a significant role in making red meat, white bread, and sugar the diet of choice—linked to wealth, luxury, and power—and shows how dietary choices connect to the pressing issues of climate change and food supply.
Book Synopsis Victorian Sustainability in Literature and Culture by : Wendy Parkins
Download or read book Victorian Sustainability in Literature and Culture written by Wendy Parkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a growing awareness of the depletion of energy resources and the perils of environmental degradation to the founding of self-sufficient communities and the establishment of the National Trust, the concept of sustainability began to take on a new importance in the Victorian period. An emerging sense of the fragility and instability of human and natural resources, and the deeply complex interweaving of the two, led many Victorians to consider how to preserve or protect what they valued, and how individuals, communities (or even nations) could survive and flourish in a world of finite resources. This collection explores not only nascent understandings of sustainability in ecological or environmental contexts but also encompasses consideration of the problem of psychological sustainability and emotional wellbeing in response to the upheavals of modernity. With chapters by scholars working in literary studies, history, cultural studies, and sustainability studies, the volume encompasses a wide diversity of topics, objects, and authors ranging from the 1850s to the early twentieth century. Victorian Sustainability offers new perspectives on debates about sustainability in the present by showing how our current concerns derive from an earlier historical context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Best Book of the Year: The “informative and entertaining” first major biography of the trailblazing, controversial children’s author (The Washington Post). Born in 1858, Edith Nesbit is today considered the first modern writer for children and the inventor of the children’s adventure story. In The Life and Loves of E. Nesbit, award-winning biographer Eleanor Fitzsimons uncovers the little-known details of her life, introducing readers to the Fabian Society cofounder and fabulous socialite who hosted legendary parties and had admirers by the dozen, including George Bernard Shaw. Through Nesbit’s letters and archival research, Fitzsimons reveals “E.” to have been a prolific lecturer and writer on socialism and shows how Nesbit incorporated these ideas into her writing, thereby influencing a generation of children—an aspect of her literary legacy never before examined. Fitzsimons’s riveting biography brings new light to the life and works of this remarkable writer and woman. “Meticulous and invaluable...exceptionally illuminating and detailed.” —The Wall Street Journal “Fitzsimons handily reassembles the hundreds of intricate, idiosyncratic parts of the miraculous E. Nesbit machine.” —The New York Times Book Review “I’ve always loved the work of E. Nesbit—The Railway Children and Five Children and It are my favorites—but I knew nothing about the extraordinary, surprising life of this great figure in children’s literature . . . so gripping that I read [it] in two days.” —Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times-bestsellingauthor of The Happiness Project “A charming, lively, and old-fashioned biography . . . highly readable.” —Publishers Weekly “A terrific book.” —Neil Gaiman
