Book excerpt: The intensity of bubble collapse is defined as the power transmitted per unit surface area of the bubble when the collapse pressure is a maximum and is given by the square of the collapse pressure divided by the acoustic impedence of the liquid. The efficiency of damage is defined as the ratio of the intensity of erosion of the material to the intensity of bubble collapse. Quantitative analysis is made to show how this efficiency would be affected by various physical effects such as inertia, damping of gas and vapor inside the bubble, heat transfer, compressibility, surface tension and viscosity. Experimental results with vibratory apparatus show that the efficiency of damage is primarily controlled by the damping of non-condensible gases and vapor. At higher temperature viscosity also seems to be important. Within the range of experiments, surface tension of the liquids tested seems to be unimportant. The group of non-dimensional numbers derived from the above analysis as used to formulate a modeling technique to predict the rate of depth of erosion in actual operating hydrodynamic systems. Test results from this apparatus have confirmed the time dependence of cavitation intensity and also indicated the relationship between erosion intensity (I sub e) and cavitation parameter (sigma) for an NACA 16-021 foil section at 181 ft/sec. A family of the I sub e versus sigma curves is sought for several velocities so that the true relation between I sub e and velocity can be established thus providing a clue of the pressure which causes the bubbles to collapse. Additional testing is planned to determine the relationship between Reynold's number (Re) and erosion intensity (I sub e) for several values of cavitation parameter (sigma). The test models were 0.635 cm diameter zero-caliber ogives made of pure annealed aluminum. The aluminum was selected as a material which would be suitable for recording the intensity of cavitation bubble collapse. The damage in the initial stages was in the form of small indentations in the model surface. The greatest damage was within an area corresponding to the cavity closure point on the model. The pits were round depressions usually under 0.1 mm in diameter, with the majority less than 0.05 mm across. During the formation of these pits, it appears that no material was removed from the surface. Using the pure annealed aluminum test probe, a sufficient damage sample could be generated in a relatively short period of time.

Not all of the approaches arenew. Some even date back to the 19th century or earlier.. What is newis the application of these approaches to explosion phenomena. Inorder to make these tools easily available to the current detonationphysicist, basic acoustics is therefore also addressed. Whereas the current plane wave, homogeneous flow detonation physicsis an excellent engineering tool for numerical predictions undergiven conditions, the multi-hot-spot-model is an additional tool foranalyzing phenomena that cannot be explained by classicalcalculations. The real benefit comes from being able to understand,without any artificial assumptions, the whole phenomenology ofdetonations and explosions. By specifying pressure generatingmechanisms, one is able to see that the current treatment of thedetonics of energetic materials is only a very special - but powerful- case of explosion events and hazards. It becomes clear thatphysical explosions must be taken into account in any safetyconsiderations. In these terms it is easy to understand why evenliquid carbon dioxide and inert silo materials can explode. A unique collection of unexpected events, which might surprise evenspecialists, has resulted from the evaluation of the model. Thereforethis book is valuable for each explosion and safety scientist for theunderstanding and forecasting of unwanted events. The text mainlyaddresses the next generation of explosion and detonation scientists,with the goal of promoting the science of detonation on a newphysical basis. For this reason gaps in current knowledge are alsoaddressed. The science of explosions is not fully mature, but isstill in its beginning - and the tools necessary for furthering theunderstanding of these phenomena have been with us for centuries.
