Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masaki Kashiwara is undoubtedly one of the masters of the theory of $D$-modules, and he has created a good, accessible entry point to the subject. The theory of $D$-modules is a very powerful point of view, bringing ideas from algebra and algebraic geometry to the analysis of systems of differential equations. It is often used in conjunction with microlocal analysis, as some of the important theorems are best stated or proved using these techniques. The theory has been used very successfully in applications to representation theory. Here, there is an emphasis on $b$-functions. These show up in various contexts: number theory, analysis, representation theory, and the geometry and invariants of prehomogeneous vector spaces. Some of the most important results on $b$-functions were obtained by Kashiwara. A hot topic from the mid '70s to mid '80s, it has now moved a bit more into the mainstream. Graduate students and research mathematicians will find that working on the subject in the two-decade interval has given Kashiwara a very good perspective for presenting the topic to the general mathematical public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microlocal analysis began around 1970 when Mikio Sato, along with coauthors Masaki Kashiwara and Takahiro Kawai, wrote a decisive article on the structure of pseudodifferential equations, thus laying the foundation of D-modules and the singular spectrums of hyperfunctions. The key idea is the analysis of problems on the phase space, i.e., the cotangent bundle of the base space. Microlocal analysis is an active area of mathematical research that has been applied to many fields such as real and complex analysis, representation theory, topology, number theory, and mathematical physics. This volume contains the presentations given at a seminar jointly organized by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and Centre National des Recherches Scientifiques entitled New Trends in Microlocal Analysis. The book is divided into three parts: partial differential equations and mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, and algebraic analysis - D-modules and sheave theory. The large variety of new research that is covered will prove invaluable to students and researchers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is based on a series of thematic workshops on the theory of wavelets and the theory of splines. Important applications are included. The volume is divided into four parts: Spline Functions, Theory of Wavelets, Wavelets in Physics, and Splines and Wavelets in Statistics. Part one presents the broad spectrum of current research in the theory and applications of spline functions. Theory ranges from classical univariate spline approximation to an abstract framework for multivariate spline interpolation. Applications include scattered-data interpolation, differential equations and various techniques in CAGD. Part two considers two developments in subdivision schemes; one for uniform regularity and the other for irregular situations. The latter includes construction of multidimensional wavelet bases and determination of bases with a given time frequency localization. In part three, the multifractal formalism is extended to fractal functions involving oscillating singularites. There is a review of a method of quantization of classical systems based on the theory of coherent states. Wavelets are applied in the domains of atomic, molecular and condensed-matter physics. In part four, ways in which wavelets can be used to solve important function estimation problems in statistics are shown. Different wavelet estimators are proposed in the following distinct cases: functions with discontinuities, errors that are no longer Gaussian, wavelet estimation with robustness, and error distribution that is no longer stationary. Some of the contributions in this volume are current research results not previously available in monograph form. The volume features many applications and interesting new theoretical developments. Readers will find powerful methods for studying irregularities in mathematics, physics, and statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Radon transform is an important topic in integral geometry which deals with the problem of expressing a function on a manifold in terms of its integrals over certain submanifolds. Solutions to such problems have a wide range of applications, namely to partial differential equations, group representations, X-ray technology, nuclear magnetic resonance scanning, and tomography. This second edition, significantly expanded and updated, presents new material taking into account some of the progress made in the field since 1980. Aimed at beginning graduate students, this monograph will be useful in the classroom or as a resource for self-study. Readers will find here an accessible introduction to Radon transform theory, an elegant topic in integral geometry.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Microlocal Analysis and Spectral The ory" was held in Tuscany (Italy) at Castelvecchio Pascoli, in the district of Lucca, hosted by the international vacation center "11 Ciocco" , from September 23 to October 3, 1996. The Institute recorded the considerable progress realized recently in the field of Microlocal Analysis. In a broad sense, Microlocal Analysis is the modern version of the classical Fourier technique in solving partial differential equa tions, where now the localization proceeding takes place with respect to the dual variables too. Precisely, through the tools of pseudo-differential operators, wave-front sets and Fourier integral operators, the general theory of the lin ear partial differential equations is now reaching a mature form, in the frame of Schwartz distributions or other generalized functions. At the same time, Microlocal Analysis has grown up into a definite and independent part of Math ematical Analysis, with other applications all around Mathematics and Physics, one major theme being Spectral Theory for Schrodinger equation in Quantum Mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first introductory book on the theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces, introduced in the 1970s by Mikio Sato. The author was an early and important developer of the theory and continues to be active in the field. The subject combines elements of several areas of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, Lie groups, analysis, number theory, and invariant theory. An important objective is to create applications to number theory. For example, one of the key topics is that of zeta functions attached to prehomogeneous vector spaces; these are generalizations of the Riemann zeta function, a cornerstone of analytic number theory. Prehomogeneous vector spaces are also of use in representation theory, algebraic geometry and invariant theory. This book explains the basic concepts of prehomogeneous vector spaces, the fundamental theorem, the zeta functions associated with prehomogeneous vector spaces and a classification theory of irreducible prehomogeneous vector spaces. It strives, and to a large extent succeeds, in making this content, which is by its nature fairly technical, self-contained and accessible. The first section of the book, "Overview of the theory and contents of this book," Is particularly noteworthy as an excellent introduction to the subject.
