Book excerpt: Electric vehicles are changing transportation dramatically and this unique book merges the many disciplines that contribute research to make EV possible, so the reader is informed about all the underlying science and technologies driving the change. An emission-free mobility system is the only way to save the world from the greenhouse effect and other ecological issues. This belief has led to a tremendous growth in the demand for electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), which are predicted to have a promising future based on the goals fixed by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program. This book brings together the research that has been carried out in the EV/HEV sector and the leading role of advanced optimization techniques with artificial intelligence (AI). This is achieved by compiling the findings of various studies in the electrical, electronics, computer, and mechanical domains for the EV/HEV system. In addition to acting as a hub for information on these research findings, the book also addresses the challenges in the EV/HEV sector and provides proven solutions that involve the most promising AI techniques. Since the commercialization of EVs/HEVs still remains a challenge in industries in terms of performance and cost, these are the two tradeoffs which need to be researched in order to arrive at an optimal solution. Therefore, this book focuses on the convergence of various technologies involved in EVs/HEVs. Since all countries will gradually shift from conventional internal combustion (IC) engine-based vehicles to EVs/HEVs in the near future, it also serves as a useful reliable resource for multidisciplinary researchers and industry teams.

Book excerpt: Permanent magnet synchronous motors are finding ever increasing use in hybrid and electric vehicles. This thesis develops a new control strategy for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) to reduce the motor and inverter losses compared to conventional control techniques. The strategy utilises three common control modes for PMSMs; brushless DC with 1200E conduction, brushless DC with 1800E conduction, and brushless AC control. The torque and power output for each control mode is determined for an example motor system using a three phase axial flux VASA motor and an IGBT inverter. The loss components for the motor and inverter are also estimated using a combination of analytical and simulation techniques and results are then validated against experimental measurements. Efficiency maps for each control mode have been used to determine an optimal mode utilisation strategy, which minimises the total system losses and maximises the available motor torque output. The proposed control strategy switches between the three control modes without interruption of motor torque to maximise the system efficiency for the instantaneous operating speed and demanded torque output. The benefits of the new strategy are demonstrated using an example vehicle over a simulated drive cycle. This yields a 10% reduction in losses compared to conventional brush less AC control.

Book excerpt: The 2004 Toyota Prius exceeded sales expectations and led the automotive industry to realize that there is a healthy market for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The Prius uses two interior permanent magnet motors to manipulate power flow throughout the drive system. Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are most suitable for HEVs and full electric vehicles due to their high efficiency, high power density, and fast dynamic response. This thesis will present vector control theory for PMSMs, with focus on interior permanent magnet motors. The primary 50kW drive motor and inverter of the 2004 Toyota Prius Synergy drive system was removed for an intensive thermal, electrical, and mechanical evaluation in a dynamometer test cell at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These evaluations include locked rotor, back-EMF, and motoring operation region tests. The resulting data is presented to reveal characteristics such as torque capabilities, thermal limitations, and motor efficiencies for all toque-speed operation points. One of the most challenging tasks of the evaluation was to solve problems related to electromagnetic interference (EMI). The pulse width modulation (PWM) driven high voltage converter/inverter is a large source of electromagnetic field radiation and nearby low level signals, including control circuitry for the hybrid system, will experience EMI if proper countermeasures are not taken. Methods to reduce electromagnetic field radiation and practices to prevent EMI are discussed.

Book excerpt: Document from the year 2022 in the subject Engineering - General, grade: 12, , language: English, abstract: The creation of a simulation model for closed loop vector controlled IPMSM drive performance enhancement and speed control is described in this book. By regulating the torque component of the current, the model achieves superior speed tracking and rapid dynamic response under transient and steady-state circumstances. The control technique is used by both the proportional and integrated controllers in the PI controller. Combining two independent controllers and reducing the shortcomings of each results in a more effective controller. To offer optimal speed operation in the face of environmental changes, load variations, and structural disturbances, the Fuzzy Logic Controller for PMSM must be properly constructed. Using MATLAB Simulink, this book gives a comprehensive simulation of an internal permanent magnet synchronous motor driving system. Interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) are used to improve machine performance and offer rapid torque response. IPMSMs are utilised in low and medium-power applications such as servos, robotics, variable-speed motors, electric vehicles, and computer peripherals. Because PM motor drives are becoming more popular, simulation systems capable of handling motor drive simulations are in great demand. Simulation tools can dynamically simulate motor drives in a visual environment, saving money and time and easing the development of new systems.

Researchers and graduate students in electrical engineering, systems and control, and electric vehicles will find this book useful. Features: • Implements evolutionary optimization algorithms to improve PMSM performance. • Provides coverage of PMSM control design in the flux-weakening region. • Proposes a modern method of model predictive control to improve the dynamic performance of interior PMSM. • Studies the dynamic performance of two kinds of PMSMs: surface-mounted and interior permanent magnet types. • Includes several case studies and illustrative examples with MATLAB®. This book is aimed at researchers, graduate students, and libraries in electrical engineering with specialization in systems and control and electric vehicles.

Book excerpt: "Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are one of the today's most successful technologies for developing systems that require real time operation and providing additional flexibility to the designer. This research is focused on developing a control board for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) using an FPGA module. The board is configured for individual use of an FPGA, digital signal processor (DSP) or in combination to control the PMSM by generating the required Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) to the inverter in order to drive and control the speed of the PMSM. Since, the exact rotor position and speed are required to control the motor; a useful method is developed digitally and implemented in the FPGA hardware module. The speed observer (SO), in which the Hall effect signals were used to calculate the speed and the angle of the rotor. In this thesis, three different techniques of PWM generation were developed and combined with rotor position and speed method. The project is implemented in Altera FPGA using Quartus II software V11.0 with VHDL as the supporting language. The design achieved high performance and accuracy of the detection estimation and control scheme for the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine. Error and design analysis has been done also"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Since the development of the internal combustion engine and its application to the transportation sector, people are becoming dependent on a more economic and comfortable way of traveling. However, besides all the benefits that combustion engines can provide, the abusive use of fossil fuels, its constant increase of price and recent environmental concerns led to a new form of mobility, supported on a technology already used in the past: the electric motor. Having this in consideration, this book aims at analyzing and discussing the control domain in electric mobility concerning the permanent magnet synchronous motors, in particular an application of a 150kW motor for an electric bus. It is presented the design of the controller that drives the motor, allowing its driving and braking, with the ability to regenerate braking energy for recharging the batteries. Also, the system is capable of working without speed or position sensors.
