Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Buying and Selling Securities Through a Member of a Stock Exchange During the last hundred years there has been an enormous increase in the indebtedness of corporations and political bodies. This has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in the amount of the securities which are used to evidence the larger part of this indebtedness. These securities have a value which is measured in money, and are being constantly bought and sold. The number of purchases and sales of securities which take place every day throughout the world is enormous. These transactions are of course most numerous wherever money centres. In such places are found stockbrokers, so called, who make it their business to act as agents for the many individuals who wish to deal in or with securities. Wherever there are many stockbrokers, it has been found convenient to establish Stock Exchanges. These are in their nature private business associations, founded to facilitate and regulate dealings in securities, to which only stockbrokers belong. The members elect officers and committees with power to regulate matters connected with the Exchange, the conduct of its members, and the transaction of business. Book excerpt: It is the aim of this book, therefore, to explain in the simplest possible terms what the Stock Exchange is, and the meaning of the different securities dealt in. The attempt has been made before, but the results appear in books published at a price which puts them beyond the reach of many readers, and it is hoped that the inclusion of such a work hi the People's Books will do something to enlarge the general knowledge of a subject which to many is a source of bewilderment. The Stock Exchange by John Felix Wheeler: This book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the stock market, covering topics like trading strategies, investment principles, and market analysis. Wheeler's writing is clear and accessible, making complex financial concepts easy to understand for readers of all levels of financial literacy. Key Aspects of the Book "The Stock Exchange": Investment Principles: The book provides readers with principles for successful investing, teaching them to make informed decisions and manage risk effectively. Market Analysis: The book explores the ways in which economic, political, and social factors can affect the stock market, providing readers with tools for market analysis and prediction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stock Exchange N accordance with the scope of the series of Books on Business, of which this little work forms an item, its main object is to explain to the unversed in simple terms the somewhat com plicated machinery of the Stock Exchange Some criticism is ventured upon here and there, and a practical hint may be gleaned now and again from its pages; but the real aim of the book is merely to explain, not to comment. If the book conveys some idea of the important part the Stock Ex change plays in the economy of the nation, and of how it plays that part; if it furnishes a solution of the various mysteries which the routine of the Stock Exchange presents to many minds, the objects of the little work will have been attained. Owing to the continued demand for the book, and to the changes which have occurred during the decade which has elapsed since it was written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law and Practice of the Stock Exchange With Appendices: Containing the Rules and Regulations Annotated, and Forms of Instruments Accompanying a Mortgage of Securities It has been my endeavour to render the book useful not only to the legal profession, but also to members of the Stock Exchange and to the public generally. Consequently I have cited many of the cases at a length. Which would perhaps have been unnecessary had the book been intended only for those to whom the legal reports are readily accessible. It is chiefly, too, with a view to the convenience of the public, who generally have little opportunity for acquiring an intimate acquaintance with the manner in which the business of the Stock Exchange is conducted, that the chapter which illustrates the usual method of doing a bargain has been inserted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If speculation were an exact science, one would simply have to analyze a situation, select the appropriate rule, and buy or sell accordingly. But the factors that influence prices are infinite in number and character, as well as in their effect upon the market; and the speculator's forecasts of the probable outcome are nothing more than composite products of his own emotional equipment, his theoretical knowledge of the principles involved, and that reservoir of accumulated memories called "Experience."-from "Intuition"The corporate arena in the United States has changed tremendously since the early years of the Great Depression, but the basics of buying, selling, and making-and losing-money in the stock market have remained the same. This eighth edition of a classic of stock speculation was assembled from articles appearing in The Magazine of Wall Street in 1926 and 1927 and updated in 1933, just as new market rules and regulations were coming into play to prevent Black Friday from occurring again. With a straightforward tone and solid insight, this work, still recommended as must reading for players in the market, covers: the principles and techniques of manipulation tape reading the law of averages charts and mechanical systems fundamentals what to buy, and when rights, arbitrage, and puts and calls and more.JOHN DURAND also wrote How to Secure Continuous Security Profits in Modern Markets (1929). A. T. MILLER is also the author of Principles of Successful Speculation (1931).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Wall Street, an Understandable Description of a Purchase a Sale a Short Sale: With Forms, Definitions, Rules, C During eight years' special study in connection with my practice in New York City, I have been unable to find anything that gave a clear and comprehensive statement of stock transactions on the New York Stock Exchange. It has been no easy task to write one, first, because the information cannot be had from books; second, it is exceedingly difficult to compress it into a small volume; third, it is hard to decide what to omit. I have con cluded to give the entire course of a stock transaction. If I have gone too much into detail, that is better than leaving out the very thing a particular reader might wish to know. After a day spent in the Congressional Library at Washington, I can say that this is the first attempt to give the complete mechanism of a trade in stocks. I intend to expand this volume in future, and when time permits to use it as the skeleton of a law book follow ing the lines of my New York New Jersey Corpora tions, in which I will annotate the decisions as far as possible, to the particular stage of the trade they relate to. Although the present edition is the result of nearly a year of examination of the law and customs of the New York Stock Exchange; I am aware that it may contain inaccuracies which I will be glad to have the reader inform me of. I gratefully acknowledge my obligation to Mr. Elbert W. King for his most valuable technical suggestions, and also to Mr. H. N. Raymond for his assistance.
