Equally significant, women have served in critical civilian roles during war in service to this nation. The protagonist in this saga gains admission into the U.S. Army to enhance her life chances and forage several future goals. Unknowingly, the protagonist embarks upon military service joining an influx of women of color- officially known as the All-Volunteer Force. Our omnipresent God, manifests his master design through lives of believers, exceeding expectations in ways never imagined, creating us at once singular, but collectively including us in the larger fabric of his plan. The protagonist's journey is riddled with twists and turns during her quest to transition from an individual, into a soldier, and a licensed clinical social worker. Throughout life anxiety provoking questions (e.g. Where am I going? How will I make my goals a reality?) demand immediate responses, which threaten to overshadow the joy and challenge of goal attainment. While many individuals struggle to connect the dots, the protagonist's encounter with an Armed Forces recruiter establishes a trajectory of events that address initial inquiries and spur adventures the protagonist never anticipated. Serendipity. Nothing but favor! God orchestrates divine connections linking the right people to the right opportunities at the right time for those who step out on faith! While pensive, but never deterred, the protagonist learns distance running and deep breathing, unknowingly developing valuable skills, crucial in completing tasks only dreamt of years earlier. Because of enough belief, God allows the protagonist's impossible dreams to become possible. You'll be grappling with the ideal that, risks taken today, in the absence of knowledge of outcomes serve as catalysts for overcoming tomorrow's obstacles! "Seed planting" by influential figures; belief in God; commitment; risk-taking; mastery (early success); along with clean and sober living anchors the protagonist in Christ and propels her into her God given destiny. Glory to God!

Book excerpt: The award-winning Introduction to Social Work: An Advocacy-Based Profession takes students on an exploration of what social work is, what it was historically, and how to be an effective advocate as a social worker moving forward. Built on a unique advocacy practice and policy model comprised of four components—economic and social justice, a supportive environment, human needs and rights, and political access—the book provides a crucial lens for viewing today’s social issues. Best-selling authors Lisa E. Cox, Carolyn J. Tice, and Dennis D. Long emphasize advocacy throughout all sectors of social work, with a focus on environmental, international, and military social work. The Third Edition closely aligns with the latest Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE); references the 2018 Code of Ethics from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW); and includes profound discussions of societal impacts on areas of public health, policy, juvenile justice, race, inequality, social movements, and self-care. This title is accompanied by a complete teaching and learning package.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the lives and experiences of military service members, veterans, and their families in the United States today, with special emphasis given to those of the post-9/11 era. This reference work provides detailed information on the issues U.S. service members face both stateside and during deployments overseas. Issues covered include relations with family; substance use; housing; educational and job training opportunities; post-traumatic stress disorder and other health issues; and experiences of women, sexual minorities, and ethnic/racial minorities in the armed services. This set also examines major issues related to military service for people close to the men and women who serve our country, such as spouses or partners, children, and parents grappling with such issues as single parenthood during deployment and bereavement at the loss of a loved one. Finally, this set is a valuable resource for people seeking a greater understanding of the issues that confront some military service members and veterans, from chronic health problems to economic vulnerability to suicide to incarceration. The two volumes are written in a comprehensive yet succinct and accessible style by experts familiar with the latest trends and findings.

Book excerpt: Relational Care focuses on how people working in and around healthcare can improve the delivery of whole person care. This text integrates Systems Theory and a range of communication tools to support readers in working collaboratively and developing individualized road maps for difficult conversations. Focusing on the relationships between patient, family, and clinician, known as the Relational System, the authors explore how effective communication in healthcare can improve the well-being of all. Beginning with theoretical chapters, the Personal System is described as body, mind, and spirit. Using both Systems encourages readers to see the whole person as they practice. The book incorporates how relational practice improves care in topics such as grief, end-of-life care, stress, and burnout, giving bad news and resolving conflict. Each chapter includes case studies, reflective questions, and prompts for critical thinking to help the reader embed their learning. This practice-changing textbook will be useful to a range of health practitioners, including nurses, Physician Assistants, physicians, and more. It can be used as a supplemental reading for medical interviewing and communications courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Occupational Health Psychology provides a thorough overview of Occupational Health Psychology (OHP) with a focus on empowering readers to take appropriate and reasoned action to address a wide variety of worker health, safety, and well-being challenges that are present in working situations all over the world. Although relatively new as an area of specialization, OHP research and intervention efforts are already having major impacts on the way work is done around the world. Each of the twelve chapters in Essentials of Occupational Health Psychology addresses an essential aspect of OHP, with a consistent emphasis on putting what is known about that area into practice. Topics include essential background information regarding the history of OHP and major areas of OHP research and practice, such as work-related stress and recovery, psychological and physical demands and resources, interpersonal mistreatment, work and nonwork role dynamics, and safety. Each chapter features a discussion of why these topics are important to workers and organizations, as well as pertinent evaluation and/or intervention recommendations to help readers better understand what they can do to improve worker health, safety, and well-being, and how to convince others of the value of such efforts. Additional supplements within each chapter include a set of targeted learning objectives to help structure student reading and in-class discussion, focused discussion questions, pertinent media resources to provide current examples of these topics, and professional profiles based on interviews conducted by the authors with fourteen well-known and widely respected OHP researchers and practitioners. Essentials of Occupational Health Psychology is valuable to graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as working professionals who are interested in learning how to manage work environments that support worker health, safety, and well-being. The chapters in this text could also provide supplemental reading for training and development workshops for professionals in related disciplines who could benefit from a better understanding of the psychology associated with work experiences.
