Book excerpt: A mystic tradition can be considered a path or school of spirituality in which ones seeks a direct, personal experience of the Divine Presence - in whatever form that may be - without barriers or intermediaries. Perhaps it could be said that while religions offer believers a system of belief, mystic traditions offer practitioners a system of experience. In Mysticism in the 21st Century, Monette examines five contemporary spiritual movements: Hermeticism, Paganism, Sufism, Tantra, and Yoga, providing the reader with an introduction to this branch of the study of religion. In additional to detailed notes, each chapter also includes recommended reading lists for further study, online sources, and review questions at the end of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three major ways to follow the spiritual path: slow, fast, and the "Bardo." Most people are familiar with gradual awakening by using discipline and purification practices to cleanse one's self of emotional and behavioral conditioning. Then there are others who awaken suddenly, perhaps through a near-death or out-of-body experience, and they find themselves seeing and feeling in new ways about everything, including their own subconscious (the Bardo realm). To become a mystic, however, is a step further, as it involves both an inner commitment to spiritual growth in one's daily life as well as a deeper initiation into the mysteries of one's mind. The author, Carol Parrish-Harra, is a trusted master in helping train and guide those individuals who seek to grow in their inner life----in both the pain and the ecstasy. In The Making of a Mystic, she shares age-old wisdom gleaned from previous generations, and adds a wealth of personal experience gained from living a mystical life in our modern world. "The Making of a Mystic: A Twenty-first Century Mystic Speaks by Carol E. Parrish-Harra offers an excellent introduction to the path of mysticism by someone who has not only studied deeply but has had deep mystical experiences herself. As she writes: 'Our real heartfelt desire is to be in the Presence.' This book describes her quest to bring this heartfelt desire to realization. It is an inspiring work for travelers on the path." Robert Powell, PhD, co-founder of the Sophia Foundation and author of The Sophia Teachings, The Most Holy Trinosophia, The Mystery, Destiny, and Biography of Mary Magdalene, and other works. "Carol Parrish-Harra is a dynamic, spiritual trailblazer and a real visionary. Her spiritual path is a living synthesis of multiple strands of living wisdom and her story is a document of great importance. As a modern Mystic she is a source of evolutionary inspiration and spiritual renewal, and I warmly recommend the book!" Soren Hauge, Spiritual Teacher, Counsellor and Author, www.sorenhauge.com "The Making of a Mystic is what I would like all newcomers to the field of spiritual Esoterics and Mysticism to read. Carol Parrish gives easy-to-read descriptions of some essential Do's and Don'ts from her personal experience, and warns of several traps that can befall the advanced student. A gentle, but firm entry into this vast subject." Archbishop Frank Bugge, Australian Church of Antioch-Malibar Rite "The Making of a Mystic is the culmination of forty years' searching, finding and sharing insights into higher reality. Carol Parrish has inspired generations of students, and her new book-written in the straightforward, compelling style that is her hallmark-is a 'must-read' for all on the Path." John F. Nash, PhD, author of The Soul and Its Destiny and The Sacramental Church

Book excerpt: Now in a fully corrected edition, one of the true spiritual classics of the twentieth century. Published for the first time with an index and Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar’s afterword, this new English publication of Meditations on the Tarot is the landmark edition of one of the most important works of esoteric Christianity. Written anonymously and published posthumously, as was the author’s wish, the intention of this work is for the reader to find a relationship with the author in the spiritual dimensions of existence. The author wanted not to be thought of as a personality who lived from 1900 to 1973, but as a friend who is communicating with us from beyond the boundaries of ordinary life. Using the 22 major arcana of the tarot deck as a means to explore some of humanity’s most penetrating spiritual questions, Meditations on the Tarot has attracted an unprecedented range of praise from across the spiritual spectrum.

Book excerpt: Published in the centenary year of the 1917 Russian Revolution, No Less Than Mystic is a fresh and iconoclastic history of Lenin and the Bolsheviks for a generation uninterested in Cold War ideologies and stereotypes. Although it offers a full and complete history of Leninism, 1917, the Russian Civil War and its aftermath, the book devotes more time than usual to the policies and actions of the socialist alternatives to Bolshevism – to the Menshevik Internationalists, the Socialist Revolutionaries (SRs), the Jewish Bundists and the anarchists. It prioritises Factory Committees, local Soviets, the Womens’ Zhenotdel movement, Proletkult and the Kronstadt sailors as much as the statements and actions of Lenin and Trotsky. Using the neglected writings and memoirs of Mensheviks like Julius Martov, SRs like Victor Chernov, Bolshevik oppositionists like Alexandra Kollontai and anarchists like Nestor Makhno, it traces a revolution gone wrong and suggests how it might have produced a more libertarian, emancipatory socialism than that created by Lenin and the Bolsheviks. The book broadly covers the period from 1903 (the formation of the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks) to 1921 (the suppression of the Kronstadt rebellion) and explains why the Bolshevik Revolution degenerated so quickly into its apparent opposite, and continually examines the Leninist experiment through the lens of a 21st century, de-centralised, ecological, anti-productivist and feminist socialism. Throughout its narrative it interweaves and draws parallels with contemporary anti-capitalist struggles such as those of the Zapatistas, the Kurds, the Argentinean “Recovered Factories”, Occupy, the Arab Spring, the Indignados and Intersectional feminists, attempting to open up the past to the present and points in between. We do not need another standard history of the Russian Revolution. This is not one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s hardly an exaggeration to claim that over the last few decades, central bankers have achieved unprecedented status. Especially since the global financial crisis of 2008, the world holds its breath whenever they announce new policy interventions. Given the opaque nature of the money supply, in the eyes of most citizens, the “mystic hand” of central bankers is felt everywhere. Never before have central bank policies been so decisive, not only for financial markets but also for national economies and public welfare in general. This book traces the way in which central bankers learned, unlearned, relearned and still have to learn the tricks of their trade. The lessons taught by nineteenth-century grands savants like Henry Thornton and Walter Bagehot, once instilled, were eventually neglected. This led directly to the policy mistakes that produced the Great Depression of the 1930s. When the financial crisis of 2008 broke out, central bankers the world over summoned Thornton’s and Bagehot’s wisdom and acted accordingly. This re-learning saved the world from a repetition of the Great Depression. But when the worst of the financial crisis and ensuing recession were over, central bankers continued applying unconventional monetary policies—in some areas of the world, this even extended to negative policy interest rates and massive interventions in the bond markets, which resulted in constant injections of liquidity. Once the Covid-19 pandemic arrived, most central bankers doubled down on the intensity of these kinds of policies. While the financial crisis required central bankers to act in decisive ways, it can no longer be denied that the consequences of these expansive monetary policies have become major issues. Central bank policies of the last decade and a half have resulted in a relentless build-up of leverage and debt; led to speculative bubbles in different kinds of markets; undermined the willingness of political authorities to put their fiscal houses in order; stimulated a “zombification” of the economy and the growth of shadow banking activities; and contributed to growing inequality around the world. Central bankers are at a crucial turning point for the future of their profession, and even more for the future of our economy. New lessons have to be learnt. Our future depends on these being the right lessons.

Book excerpt: The fundamental purpose of the soul is to grow and expand, but if we all just keep growing and expanding without direction, the universe will continue to explode into greater chaos than it already has. Our unifying direction must be our own personal growth. We are capable of wielding powerful forces of light and guarding our galaxy against the forces of lower vibrations. To grow into this power, we must look within ourselves and cultivate love. The New Science of Enlightenment focuses on removing all that is in the way of becoming such a being of light and love. Using the Kundalini Karma System, it offers a modern-day approach to building an abundant, peaceful, and happy existence, helping you learn to navigate the world of spirit and matter simultaneously. You can attain your goals, understand the true meaning behind the events of your life, overcome the challenges that come your way, and triumph as you take control of your destiny. Become an enlightened and powerful being in the modern world and live a truly magical existence as a modern mystic on your road to God. This guide explores ways to harness the power of your Kundalini energy to get the life you want, allowing you to end the cycle of reincarnation and return to the mind of God.

Book excerpt: The Christian mystics were seekers of God's wisdom and presence. They sought out, as described by the Celtic Christian tradition, those places "worn thin"; where earth and heaven lose their distinctions. They serve as guides to those "thin" places for the modern day spiritual seeker. The goal of this book is not to update the tradition, but to locate the ancient wisdom and spiritual insights in a modern context. In this book, the two thousand year long tradition of spiritual seekers, the Christian mystics, will be explored for the purposes of mining their insights and wisdom for today's seeker. Their wisdom has been passed to us through what is called the Contemplative or Mystical path. It is a tapestry threaded with ecstatic visions of divine love, personal revelation and a deep sense of God's direct presence. This book will introduce you to the history, major themes, characters and practices of the Christian mystics. The mystics will serve as your spiritual guides to the love of God. The purpose of this book is not to update the ancient Contemplative wisdom and practices of the Christian mystics. Instead, the intent is to understand their wisdom in the hope of articulating it in such a way that spiritual seekers from a modern context can understand and apply what is gained for the benefit of their spiritual life.

Book excerpt: This volume provides an account of the surprising ‘in-breaking’ of spiritual life that persists in our culture, despite the best efforts of atheist spokespersons and secular theorists. Spirituality in its varying forms is irrepressible, resisting our attempts to exclude it by continuing to seep through the cracks and leak through the gaps. When it is allowed to manifest itself through the Christian faith-tradition, it has the power to surprise, transform and renew everything it touches. This volume contains a series of case studies, each of which describes the inner-functionings and out-workings of the spiritual life as a transformative point of contact between God, world, society and self. Each chapter contains high-level inquiry, drawing on best-practice scholarship that is deeply aware of the needs and opportunities that confront 21st-century society.
