Book excerpt: Phase separation in composite materials, or materials that are made up of two or more different components, is a process in which the material separates over time into regions of predominantly one component or the other. Because these composite materials are often developed to be used under certain conditions, significant changes of this nature in their material composition can dramatically affect their performance, thus it is important to understand the dynamic behavior of these changes. One mathematical model of phase separation is the classical phase field model, which is a system of nonlinear evolution equations that describes nonisothermal phase separation. Instead of a composite material, the phase field model describes pure materials which can assume two different phases; for example, a solid and a liquid phase. In this dissertation, I analyze the behavior of solutions of the phase field model, along with two extensions to the classical model. One extension is the addition of stochastic terms to the model, thus incorporating random behavior into the equations to address fluctuations in temperature, structural imperfections of the material, or other unknown effects. The other extension is the addition of a nonlocal operator to account for long range interactions. The behavior of all three variations of the phase field model is studied through numerical simulations, and the results compared to describe the differences between the models. In addition, I present a proof showing that the numerical method converges to the true solution of the phase field model.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume reflect a broad spectrum of current research activities on the theory and applications of nonlinear dynamics and evolution equations. They are based on lectures given during the International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics and Evolution Equations at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NL, Canada, July 6-10, 2004. This volume contains thirteen invited and refereed papers. Nine of these are survey papers, introducing the reader to, anddescribing the current state of the art in major areas of dynamical systems, ordinary, functional and partial differential equations, and applications of such equations in the mathematical modelling of various biological and physical phenomena. These papers are complemented by four research papers thatexamine particular problems in the theory and applications of dynamical systems. Book excerpt: The authors explore a unifying model which couples phase separation and damage processes in a system of partial differential equations. The model has technological applications to solder materials where interactions of both phenomena have been observed and cannot be neglected for a realistic description. The equations are derived in a thermodynamically consistent framework and suitable weak formulations for various types of this coupled system are presented. In the main part, existence of weak solutions is proven and degenerate limits are investigated.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates a nonlocal version of a model for phase separation on an atomic lattice that was introduced by P. Podio-Guidugli in Ric. Mat. 55 (2006) 105-118. The model consists of an initial-boundary value problem for a nonlinearly coupled system of two partial differential equations governing the evolution of an order parameter p and the chemical potential my. Singular contributions to the local free energy in the form of logarithmic or ouble-obstacle potentials are admitted. In contrast to the local model, which was studied by P. Podio-Guidugli and the present authors in a series of recent publications, in the nonlocal case the equation governing the evolution of the order parameter contains in place of the Laplacian a nonlocal expression that originates from nonlocal contributions to the free energy and accounts for possible long-range interactions between the atoms. It is shown that just as in the local case the model equations are well posed, where the technique of proving existence is entirely different: it is based on an application of Tikhonov's fixed point theorem in a rather unusual separable and reflexive Banach space.

Including 40 papers that reflect his vast field of scientific activity, the contributions discuss non-standard methods (generalized model) to demonstrate the wide range of subjects that were covered by this exceptional scientific leader. The topics range from micromechanical basics to engineering applications, focusing on new models and applications of well-known models to new problems. They include micro–macro aspects, computational endeavors, options for identifying constitutive equations, and old problems with incorrect or non-satisfying solutions based on the classical continua assumptions.
