The basic principle involved in heat treatment is the process of heating and cooling. The industrial process of case hardening aims to harden just the workpiece case, letting the inner part softer. The macrosopical model presented here takes into account the diffusion of carbon in the workpiece at austenitic phase, the slow diffusion at high temperature and the rapid cooling, which produces the formation of the martensitic microstructure. During this process, phase transformations in steel take place, influenced by the non homogeneous carbon distribution. The mathematical model presented here consists of a nonlinear evolution equation for the temperature, coupled with a nonlinear evolution equation for the carbon concentration, both coupled with two ordinary differential equations describing the evolution of phase fractions. Existence and uniqueness of solutions are investigated and some numerical simulations are presented.

Book excerpt: This work deals with the mathematical modelling of material behaviour of steel during heat treatment. In the case of inelastic material behaviour, the underlying system of equations is non-linear and its equations are coupled. Therefore, the description and modelling of inelastic phenomena is especially challenging. The aim of this thesis is to model the material behaviour of steel during heating and austenitisation taking into account creep and transformation-induced plasticity. We obtain a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations for temperature, phase fractions and mechanical deformations. We deal with the solving of the system as well as with the implementation of the model equations. A numerical algorithm is developed in order to solve the coupled system of equations involving the inelastic quantities. Furthermore, the presented models are used to identify certain material parameters. We present results of 3D simulations of the heat treatment of a workpiece and study the material behaviour during different heat treatment scenarios. The implementation of the model equations was carried out with the open source Finite Element Toolbox ALBERTA. We validate the 3D model by means of experimental data from workpiece experiments. Another important part of this work covers the topic of multi-mechanism models. The idea of this approach is to decompose the inelastic part of the total strain into several parts, also referred to as mechanisms. We develop a two-mechanism model for creep and TRIP arising simultaneously and discuss thermodynamic consistency.

Book excerpt: The engineering and economical aspects of the optimization of steel shaft quenching and tempering were investigated. The mathematical model and method of computer simulation for the prediction of fatigue properties of quenched and tempered steel were developed. Computer simulation of the fatigue properties of quenched and tempered steel was applied in the optimization of quenching and tempering of steel shafts. The proper heat treatment process was accepted based on economical analysis. Fatigue properties of quenched and tempered steel were predicted based on micro-structure composition and yield strength. Microstructure composition and yield strength were predicted based on as-quenched hardness. The distribution of as-quenched hardness in the workpiece was predicted through computer simulation of steel quenching using a finite volume method. The as-quenched hardness was estimated based on time of cooling and on Jominy test results. It was taken into account that the mechanical properties of quenched steel directly depend on the hardness, degree of hardening, and microstructural constituents. Using a numerical simulation of microstructure and mechanical properties, it was found out that the investigated shaft has the best fatigue properties in cases when the shaft was machined or formed on proper geometry before proper quenching and tempering. Through economical analysis of the investigated shaft manufacturing, it was found out that the most suitable shaft manufacture process is to manufacture the shaft from the quenched and tempered bar. But in this case, heterogeneous microstructures of ferrite, perlite, bainite, and martensite with very low fatigue limits could appear at some critical locations.

Book excerpt: The 15th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry was held in the agreeable surroundings of University College London, just 5 minutes walk from the British Museum in the heart of London, over the ?ve warm, sunny days from 30 June to 4 July 2008. Participants from all over the world met with the commonaimofreinforcingthe roleofmathematics asanoverarching resource for industry and business. The conference attracted over 300 participants from 30 countries, most of them participating with either a contributed talk, a minisymposium pres- tation or a plenary lecture. ‘Mathematics in Industry’ was interpreted in its widest sense as can be seen from the range of applications and techniques described in this volume. We mention just two examples. The Alan Tayler Lecture was given by Mario Primicerio on a problem arising from moving oil through pipelines when temperature variations a?ect the shearing properties of wax and thus modify the ?ow. The Wacker Prize winner, Master’s student Lauri Harhanen from the Helsinki University of Technology, showed how a novel piece of mathematics allowed new software to capture real-time images of teeth from the data supplied by present day dental machinery (see ECMI Newsletter 44). The meeting was attended by leading ?gures from government, bu- ness and science who all shared the same aim – to promote the application of innovative mathematics to industry, and identify industrial sectors that o?er the most exciting opportunities for mathematicians to provide new insight and new ideas.

Book excerpt: Despite the increased understanding we now have of materials and their properties, selecting materials for a given application remains a daunting, non-trivial task. The volume of data, inadequacies in the data, and the tens of thousands of materials to choose from can overwhelm the would-be user. The Materials Selector addresses all the problems faced by materials scientists and engineers. In its three volumes you will find the properties, performance, and processability of metals, plastics, carbon and graphite, glasses, ceramics, polymerics, and composites. The characteristics and comparative economics of the manufacturing routes that convert these materials into engineering components.

The design and implementation of novel finiteelements for specific purposes is a tedious and time consuming task, especially for nonlinearformulations. The automation of this process can help to speed up this processconsiderably since the generation of the final computer code can be accelerated by order ofseveral magnitudes. This book provides the reader with the required knowledge needed to employ modernautomatic tools like AceGen within solid mechanics in a successful way. It covers the rangefrom the theoretical background, algorithmic treatments to many different applications. Thebook is written for advanced students in the engineering field and for researchers ineducational and industrial environments.
