Book excerpt: Algorithmic probability and friends: Proceedings of the Ray Solomonoff 85th memorial conference is a collection of original work and surveys. The Solomonoff 85th memorial conference was held at Monash University's Clayton campus in Melbourne, Australia as a tribute to pioneer, Ray Solomonoff (1926-2009), honouring his various pioneering works - most particularly, his revolutionary insight in the early 1960s that the universality of Universal Turing Machines (UTMs) could be used for universal Bayesian prediction and artificial intelligence (machine learning). This work continues to increasingly influence and under-pin statistics, econometrics, machine learning, data mining, inductive inference, search algorithms, data compression, theories of (general) intelligence and philosophy of science - and applications of these areas. Ray not only envisioned this as the path to genuine artificial intelligence, but also, still in the 1960s, anticipated stages of progress in machine intelligence which would ultimately lead to machines surpassing human intelligence. Ray warned of the need to anticipate and discuss the potential consequences - and dangers - sooner rather than later. Possibly foremostly, Ray Solomonoff was a fine, happy, frugal and adventurous human being of gentle resolve who managed to fund himself while electing to conduct so much of his paradigm-changing research outside of the university system. The volume contains 35 papers pertaining to the abovementioned topics in tribute to Ray Solomonoff and his legacy.

Book excerpt: Almost all the results available in the literature on multivariate t-distributions published in the last 50 years are now collected together in this comprehensive reference. Because these distributions are becoming more prominent in many applications, this book is a must for any serious researcher or consultant working in multivariate analysis and statistical distributions. Much of this material has never before appeared in book form. The first part of the book emphasizes theoretical results of a probabilistic nature. In the second part of the book, these are supplemented by a variety of statistical aspects. Various generalizations and applications are dealt with in the final chapters. The material on estimation and regression models is of special value for practitioners in statistics and economics. A comprehensive bibliography of over 350 references is included.

Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, this book covers some recent developments in statistical inference. It provides methods applicable in problems involving nuisance parameters such as those encountered in comparing two exponential distributions or in ANOVA without the assumption of equal error variances. The generalized procedures are shown to be more powerful in detecting significant experimental results and in avoiding misleading conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete guide to powerful and practical statistical modeling using MANOVA Numerous statistical applications are time dependent. Virtually all biomedical, pharmaceutical, and industrial experiments demand repeated measurements over time. The same holds true for market research and analysis. Yet conventional methods, such as the Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (Rm ANOVA), do not always yield exact solutions, obliging practitioners to settle for asymptotic results and approximate solutions. Generalized inference in Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), mixed models, and growth curves offer exact methods of data analysis under milder conditions without deviating from the conventional philosophy of statistical inference. Generalized Inference in Repeated Measures is a concise, self-contained guide to the use of these innovative solutions, presenting them as extensions of–rather than alternatives to–classical methods of statistical evaluation. Requiring minimal prior knowledge of statistical concepts in the evaluation of linear models, the book provides exact parametric methods for each application considered, with solutions presented in terms of generalized p-values. Coverage includes: New concepts in statistical inference, with special focus on generalized p-values and generalized confidence intervals One-way and two-way ANOVA, in cases of equal and unequal variances Basic and higher-way mixed models, including testing and estimation of fixed effects and variance components Multivariate populations, including basic inference, comparison, and analysis of variance Basic, widely used repeated measures models including crossover designs and growth curves With a comprehensive set of formulas, illustrative examples, and exercises in each chapter, Generalized Inference in Repeated Measures is ideal as both a comprehensive reference for research professionals and a text for students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multivariate Bonferroni-Type Inequalities: Theory and Applications presents a systematic account of research discoveries on multivariate Bonferroni-type inequalities published in the past decade. The emergence of new bounding approaches pushes the conventional definitions of optimal inequalities and demands new insights into linear and Frechet optimality. The book explores these advances in bounding techniques with corresponding innovative applications. It presents the method of linear programming for multivariate bounds, multivariate hybrid bounds, sub-Markovian bounds, and bounds using Hamilton circuits. The first half of the book describes basic concepts and methods in probability inequalities. The author introduces the classification of univariate and multivariate bounds with optimality, discusses multivariate bounds using indicator functions, and explores linear programming for bivariate upper and lower bounds. The second half addresses bounding results and applications of multivariate Bonferroni-type inequalities. The book shows how to construct new multiple testing procedures with probability upper bounds and goes beyond bivariate upper bounds by considering vectorized upper and hybrid bounds. It presents an optimization algorithm for bivariate and multivariate lower bounds and covers vectorized high-dimensional lower bounds with refinements, such as Hamilton-type circuits and sub-Markovian events. The book concludes with applications of probability inequalities in molecular cancer therapy, big data analysis, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multivariate Analysis Comprehensive Reference Work on Multivariate Analysis and its Applications The first edition of this book, by Mardia, Kent and Bibby, has been used globally for over 40 years. This second edition brings many topics up to date, with a special emphasis on recent developments. A wide range of material in multivariate analysis is covered, including the classical themes of multivariate normal theory, multivariate regression, inference, multidimensional scaling, factor analysis, cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The book also now covers modern developments such as graphical models, robust estimation, statistical learning, and high-dimensional methods. The book expertly blends theory and application, providing numerous worked examples and exercises at the end of each chapter. The reader is assumed to have a basic knowledge of mathematical statistics at an undergraduate level together with an elementary understanding of linear algebra. There are appendices which provide a background in matrix algebra, a summary of univariate statistics, a collection of statistical tables and a discussion of computational aspects. The work includes coverage of: Basic properties of random vectors, copulas, normal distribution theory, and estimation Hypothesis testing, multivariate regression, and analysis of variance Principal component analysis, factor analysis, and canonical correlation analysis Discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, and multidimensional scaling New advances and techniques, including supervised and unsupervised statistical learning, graphical models and regularization methods for high-dimensional data Although primarily designed as a textbook for final year undergraduates and postgraduate students in mathematics and statistics, the book will also be of interest to research workers and applied scientists.
