Book Synopsis The Zurich Origins of Reformed Covenant Theology by : Pierrick Hildebrand
Download or read book The Zurich Origins of Reformed Covenant Theology written by Pierrick Hildebrand and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-22 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the origins and development of one of the most significant doctrines of Reformation theology. The innovative ways in which the Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli and his successor Heinrich Bullinger thought about the relationship between the Old and New Testaments left an indelible mark on the Reformed tradition in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Distinctively, Zwingli and Bullinger emphasized the continuity of both testaments and spoke of a single covenant between God and humanity. This would become one of the defining teachings of Reformed Christianity. This book follows the development of their "covenant theology" in the Reformation and argues for its adoption by John Calvin in Geneva and the German theologians of the post-Reformation era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the years, biographers have depicted John Calvin in manifold ways. Serene Jones takes a fresh look at Calvin as she draws a compelling portrait of Calvin as artist, engaged in the classical art of rhetoric. According to Jones, this art was used knowingly and skillfully by Calvin to persuade and challenge his diverse audiences. Jones offers a rhetorical reading of the first three chapters of Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. What emerges is a truly original interpretation of Calvin and his work.

In this very interesting letter many subjects with respect to justification by faith, the relation between Jews and Christians and so on are treated. Hovingh comments on this commentary by Erasmus, identifying his sources and stilistic and grammatical peculiarities.
Book Synopsis The Correspondence of Erasmus by : Desiderius Erasmus
Download or read book The Correspondence of Erasmus written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters in this volume cover Erasmus' correspondence from March to December 1527. These 129 letters centre primarily on Erasmus' continuing struggle with his Catholic critics, especially those in Spain and France, and on Erasmus' growing criticism of the Protestant reform movement. The letters show Erasmus' attempts to justify his position and to win favour with rulers, other prestigious men, and powerful institutions, all influential in both secular and religious spheres. Although the Inquisition in Spain investigated his orthodoxy and did not bring charges against him, the Paris Faculty of Theology formally condemned 112 propositions drawn from Erasmus' works in December 1527. The letters in this volume, written by and to Erasmus in this critical time, represent a unique view of a Europe torn by war and breaking apart into religious confessionalism and regionally organized churches. Throughout all this controversy, Erasmus repeatedly protested that the sole aim of his life's work was to promote the study of humanities for the profit of both knowledge and religion. Volume 13 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series.

Book Synopsis Petrus Martyr Vermigli. Kommentar zur Nikomachischen Ethik des Aristoteles by : Luca Baschera
Download or read book Petrus Martyr Vermigli. Kommentar zur Nikomachischen Ethik des Aristoteles written by Luca Baschera and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENGLISH Contrary to an old thesis, the dawning of the Reformation was not the end of Christian Aristotelianism. Rather, Protestants were again faced with the traditional question of the relationship between theology and philosophy. Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) counts as one of the authors who endeavored to interpret Aristotelian philosophy before the backdrop of Reformed theology. In addition to numerous exegetical and theological writings, this well respected theologian left behind a commentary on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, which is edited in the present volume. It not only evidences Vermigli’s intense engagement with the source material but also his struggle for an adequate understanding of the relationship between Aristotelian ethics and Protestant theology.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism: Volume 3, The Renaissance by : George Alexander Kennedy
Download or read book The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism: Volume 3, The Renaissance written by George Alexander Kennedy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 volume was the first to explore as part of an unbroken continuum the critical legacy both of the humanist rediscovery of ancient learning and of its neoclassical reformulation. Focused on what is arguably the most complex phase in the transmission of the Western literary-critical heritage, the book encompasses those issues that helped shape the way European writers thought about literature from the late Middle Ages to the late seventeenth century. These issues touched almost every facet of Western intellectual endeavour, as well as the historical, cultural, social, scientific, and technological contexts in which that activity evolved. From the interpretative reassessment of the major ancient poetic texts, this volume addresses the emergence of the literary critic in Europe by exploring poetics, prose fiction, contexts of criticism, neoclassicism, and national developments. Sixty-one chapters by internationally respected scholars are supported by an introduction, detailed bibliographies for further investigation and a full index.
