Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha and Omaha Men I became a resident of Omaha in 1870 and lived here for many years. Here I was married, here our four children were born and here one of them died. After an absence of a number of years, and having sold a newspaper business in Oregon and thus being footloose, I concluded to return to Omaha and publish something of a history of the city I first saw as a boy and when it was a very small community. I found that an exhaustive history of Omaha and Douglas County had just been published by an eastern firm and that my old friend, Attorney Ed. F. Morearty, had recently had published an interesting story of Omaha covering the period of his residence here, from 1880, and hence I modified my plan and concluded to publish a booklet of modest size and at a modest price. I have endeavored to cover the ground in a concise manner and trust that what I have to say will be found of general interest and that it may prove to be of historical value to some extent. In Washington County when I was a boy I knew a man who did quite a business in making wine out of wild grapes gathered on the Elkhorn river. His selling price was a dollar a gallon and when one of the neighbors told him that he could well afford to sell it for less he said: "One gallon one dollar; one dollar one gallon. That is easy to remember. I am not much on figures and if I should charge 85 cents a gallon, for instance, I would get all balled up in making change." So with this publication: One booklet one dollar; one dollar one booklet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Omaha: From the Pioneer Days to the Present Time It will be noticed that the chroniclers used the word South, when it should have been west, and north when it should have been east, with reference to the river as it runs past Omaha. This is easily accounted for by the fact that in those days the Missouri river was generally sup posed to run east and west, or nearly so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of Omaha When Columbus sailed back to Spain, in 1492, and told of the wonderful country he had discovered, men were at first surprised and then anxious to see it for themselves. Spain, France and England were rich and populous countries and one after another fitted out expeditions to explore the new world. These expeditions were placed in charge of brave soldiers who, upon landing, at once claimed possession of the land in the name of the King. The English voyagers laid claim to the middle portion of the Atlantic coast while the French sailors landed further north. These colonies kept increasing in numbers and grad ually pushed their settlements west The French colonists moved toward the southwest and northwest while the Spaniards sailed to both sides of the new continent, some landing on the eastern shore in what is now Florida, while others reached the west shore of Mexico. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nebraskans: 1854-1904 When we reflect that in 18 54, Nebraska was a wilderness or prairie and plain, and that 50 years has seen it transformed into a great commonwealth, teeming with life and industry, and counted one of the foremost of the sisterhood of states, it seems fitting and in keeping with the occasion of this, its golden anniversary, to collect together the portraits of the men who have been so closely identified with the production of this glorious result. Here will be found many of the pioneers as well as those who coming later, have added their quota and are entitled to share in the result achieved for this first half century. The task of getting more than one thousand busy men to give time for special sittings for photographs has not been an easy one. And equally difficult has it been to find pictures of many of the old pioneers, who long since have joined the great majority. And while it is hardly possi ble to make a work of this find complete, we feel that it is a fair representation of the foremost men, who have helped to make Nebraska what it is, and without whom, no history of Nebraska could be written. Whatever may be the value or usefulness of this collection to this generation, it will, we feel, be appreciated as almost priceless by those that follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Crime Against Labor: A Brief History of the Omaha Council Bluffs Street Railway Strike, 1909 It is the purpose of this narrative to preserve in comprehensive form the history of the industrial crime that, in September, 1909, shook the city of Omaha and adjoining municipalities to their outermost environs; paralyzed for some days the business and social interests of people; temporarily withdrew from 500 men and their families the means of livelihood; and ultimately left 150 of them to search elsewhere for new occupation. It is the story of the strike of the union operating carmen in the employ of the Omaha Council Bluffs Street Railway Company, the serv ice corporation operating the traction systems of the cities of Omaha, South Omaha, Council Bluffs, and the suburbs of Benson, Florence and Dundee. The facts herein presented are taken from authentic records. A large portion, relating to conferences held, first with a view of preventing a strike, and later with a view of settling-the strike, is reprinted from the transcript of the court reporter who made a stenographic report of the proceedings at the time of their occurrence. A portion is reproduced from the editorial and news columns of the daily newspapers, while statements of some of the public officials and most prominent business men of the city, as well as of several of the striking and non-union employes of the company, are presented in order that the facts may be truthfully set forth without undue prejudice or color.
