Book excerpt: Gavin Hamilton’s research shows that a toxin found in natural rubber might well have been the culprit in the 43 babies’ deaths at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children in 1980–81. In 1980-81, 43 babies died at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children from a supposed digoxin overdose. Serial murder was suspected, leading to the arrest of nurse Susan Nelles. In order to clear Nelles’s name, an investigation was launched to find an alternate explanation. No one on the Grange Royal Commission of Inquiry had expertise in diagnosis. The post-mortem diagnosis of digoxin poisoning was based on a single biochemical test without knowledge of the normal values. Gavin Hamilton’s extensive research shows that a toxin found in natural rubber, a digoxin-like substance, might well have been the culprit in the babies’ deaths. He clearly demonstrates that explanations other than serial murder account for the cluster of infant deaths at HSC. What can be learned from this black stain on Canada’s judicial system? One lesson certainly stands out: we can’t ever again allow a group of unqualified amateur diagnosticians make life-and-death decisions about such important matters as potential serial murders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FLI (Friends of Legacy and Intrigue) Reveals Lost Family Found is a story about finding family history hidden for almost a century. FLI is a mysterious group that has decided to enlighten the narrator’s Filipino niece, Jets, and wife, Gemma, to previously unknown family from Germany descent. FLI provide clues that eventually take them to the archdiocese archives where two journals are revealed. The problem is that church and government consider the journals too controversial for public release, let alone to possible descendants. FLI is very influential, pressing the archbishop and others to release the information. The first journal was written by Sara, who laments over a family secret involving a queen from the mid-1800s. The second journal is written by her son, Aaron, who continues their story detailing his struggles from 1930 to 1945 in Germany. The investigations FLI lead Jets, Gemma, and their companions on quests to find the truth and fate of family during World War II are difficult, painful, and satisfying. In the end, they are left with more to find and a single piece of a puzzle that will not be fully understood until all adventures are successfully completed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Financial Times Best Book of the Year A Guardian Best Architecture Book of the Year “Sharp, revealing, funny.” —The Guardian “An original and even occasionally hilarious book about losing ideals and finding them again... [De Graaf] deftly shows that architecture cannot be better or more pure than the flawed humans who make it.” —The Economist Architecture, we like to believe, is an elevated art form that shapes the world as it pleases. Four Walls and a Roof turns this fiction on its head, offering a candid account of what it’s really like to work as an architect. Drawing on his own tragicomic experiences in the field, Reinier de Graaf reveals the world of contemporary architecture in vivid snapshots: from the corridors of wealth in London, Moscow, and Dubai to the demolished hopes of postwar social housing in New York and St. Louis. We meet ambitious oligarchs, developers for whom architecture is nothing more than an investment, and layers of bureaucrats, consultants, and mysterious hangers-on who lie between any architect’s idea and the chance of its execution. “This is a book about power, money and influence, and architecture’s complete lack of any of them... Witty, insightful and funny, it is a (sometimes painful) dissection of a profession that thinks it is still in control.” —Financial Times “This is the most stimulating book on architecture and its practice that I have read for years.” —Architects’ Journal

Book excerpt: The Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy offers international perspectives on a wide range of issues in cultural management and cultural policy research and practice. This issue focuses on responses to, and long-term changes in the arts and cultural policy fields related to the current climate, health, and economic crises. The contributions examine organizational and economic models that allow for continued cultural production and community engagement during times of disaster. How can we learn from instantaneous reactions to crises and from cases of disaster mismanagement, and translate these insights into viable practices? What governmental and institutional policies are needed, in the long run, to secure a diverse artistic and cultural landscape? How do research methods, education, and programming need to change to accommodate conditions of crises? Finally, the authors discuss what policies and practices for a resilient arts and cultural sector might look like.
