Book excerpt: A study of common and exotic food in Shakespeare's plays, this is the first book to explore early modern English dietary literature to understand better the significance of food in Shakespearean drama. Food in Shakespeare provides for modern readers and audiences an historically accurate account of the range of, and conflicts between, contemporary ideas that informed the representations of food in the plays. It also focuses on the social and moral implications of familiar and strange foodstuff in Shakespeare's works. This new approach provides substantial fresh readings of Hamlet, Macbeth, As you Like It, The Winter's Tale, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Henry V, Titus Andronicus, Coriolanus, Pericles, Timon of Athens, and the co-authored Sir Thomas More. Among the dietaries explored are Andrew Boorde's A Compendyous Regyment or a Dyetary of Healthe (1547), William Bullein's The Gouernement of Healthe (1595), Thomas Elyot's The Castle of Helthe (1595) and Thomas Cogan's The Hauen of Health (1636). These dieteries were republished several times in the early modern period; together they typify the genre's condemnation of surfeit and the tendency to blame human disease on feeding practices. This study directs scholarly attention to the importance of early modern dietaries, analyzing their role in wider culture as well as their intersection with dramatic art. In the dietaries food and drink are indices of one's position in relation to complex ideas about rank, nationality, and spiritual well-being; careful consumption might correct moral as well as physical shortcomings. The dietaries are an eclectic genre: some contain recipes for the reader to try, others give tips on more general lifestyle choices, but all offer advice on how to maintain good health via diet. Although some are more stern and humourless than others, the overwhelming impression is that of food as an ally in the battle against disease and ill-health as well as a potential enemy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It isn’t that dragons don’t exist, they do. Black as the night without a light. One for each region of Pachemus. So where is the truth in the ones Deagon and Jenabel seek? When Deagon Maddock inherits a crumbling fortress, he discovers treasure alluding to a past he had heard as a myth so many times. Dragons, not like the ones he knows, but ones who were once protectors of the land. Did they really exist? A ghost, a crystal ball, and a book with an attitude, seem to all be telling him it is so. And when he sees the girl in the crystal ball, he is honestly more interested in her. Jenabel Sander’s brothers would worry for her, even think she was crazy, if she told them about the dragon in her dreams, or the evil man. Either one would give her brothers cause to question her sanity. She questioned her sanity. Red dragons, breathing fire, were myths made to entertain, not believe in. So how did she explain the need to find him? Anhanan can’t believe the dragon shape shifters have been wiped from the land. Nothing is left of his people but stories. It is Jenabel who keeps his mind strong and focused in the aftermath of his return and he knows there must be a battle to end the reign of the one who destroyed them. And when Jenabel is kidnapped, it is not he who fights for vengeance.

Book excerpt: In the mid-1800s, the United States needed a better way to protect the great flood of immigrants, pioneers, and settlers headed west along the southern route from Indian attacks, thieves, and murderers. Sending more cavalry wasn't the answer. The land known as the great American Desert was inhospitable to horses and mules. Only one animal "stood the test" in the southwest, and it wasn't a horse. The Great Camel Experiment of the Old West chronicles the journey of that noble beast from the Middle East to the deserts of the American Southwest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Bella Swan (Twilight), Tris Prior (Divergent), and other strong and resourceful characters have decimated the fairytale archetype of the helpless girl waiting to be rescued. Giving as good as they get, these young women access reserves of aggression to liberate themselves—but who truly benefits? By meeting violence with violence, are women turning victimization into entertainment? Are they playing out old fantasies, institutionalizing their abuse? In Hunting Girls, Kelly Oliver examines popular culture's fixation on representing young women as predators and prey and the implication that violence—especially sexual violence—is an inevitable, perhaps even celebrated, part of a woman's maturity. In such films as Kick-Ass (2010), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and Maleficent (2014), power, control, and danger drive the story, but traditional relationships of care bind the narrative, and even the protagonist's love interest adds to her suffering. To underscore the threat of these depictions, Oliver locates their manifestation of violent sex in the growing prevalence of campus rape, the valorization of woman's lack of consent, and the new urgency to implement affirmative consent apps and policies.

A dizzying, madcap ride leaves her less than eager to be a knight, but soon she finds out the guild has need of many types of people. They are stubborn loners who are determined to overcome the obstacles in their path and make a true pair, as was intended. Or are they? As Talia's first year at the guild evolves, she must deal with the quirks of the Administrator, her lessons, the odd rules of the school, the students, the mystery of Clarence and Kel, and somewhere in there, possibly decide what it is she wants for her own future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What comes to mind when you think about superheroes? Strength, bravery, and heroism are common answers. However, superheroes do not only have physical strength, but they also have mental strengths and skills. Superheroes tend to have intelligence and detection skills which allow them to develop other skills. In this analysis of superhero literacy aimed at students, the connection between superhero media and larger theories of literacy are explored. The author uses six superhero television shows to show how literacy is portrayed in superhero media and how it reflects and shapes cultural ideas of literacy. The shows covered are Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Daredevil.
