Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2016 Whistler Independent Book Award finalist. Former homicide investigator Hunter Rayne follows the white lines northward on the Alaska Highway, but a truck breakdown forces him to take an unscheduled stop in Whitehorse, Yukon, where he had been stationed as a rookie cop. While his Freightliner is awaiting repairs, Hunter and fellow driver, Dan (Sorry) Sorenson, kill time with a side trip to bush Alaska where a chance meeting with a young Alaskan woman awakens his interest in a baffling cold case. A reclusive trapper and his young girlfriend disappeared from a bloody cabin 25 years before, leaving their sled dogs chained outside. Reawakened memories of his past coupled with a recent murder find Hunter back in investigative mode with the blessings of Whitehorse RCMP boss Bartholomew Sam, son of a shaman and Hunter's old friend. He finds himself searching the banks of the mighty Yukon River for a tough old bush woman who may hold the key to more than one bloody death. It's a vivid reminder that the breathtaking beauty of the northern wilderness camouflages its brutal indifference to human life. This is the fourth novel in the Highway Mysteries series of character-driven traditional mysteries in a uniquely North American setting.

Book excerpt: Despite setbacks and cutbacks, Canada leads the world in northern and Aboriginal communications. This book provides a comprehensive survey of communications in the circumpolar region, focusing on the Canadian Arctic and sub-Arctic but also looking at the circumpolar North (Alaska, Siberia, Greenland, and the Nordic/Saami nations). Radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and web sites are all covered. As technologies and access improve, Aboriginal people are increasingly taking control of their own representation and consolidating their presence in northern media. Alia concludes that Canada will maintain its leadership in northern communications in the years ahead, given the topic's far-reaching importance and international context.

Plenty of people had motives, including his old Chicago friend whom Jack screwed out of a production deal, and Meg Davis, a seriously disturbed former child star, who may have been sexually abused by Jack during filmings. Not to mention every one of his four ex-wives. But Maxi Poole, Jack’s third wife and Hollywood reporter for Channel 6 News, doubts he’s been murdered by one of the exes and starts snooping around. Very quickly, Maxi herself becomes the killer’s next moving target.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This was an excellent book about a true pioneer! A very interesting story about the life of an amazing man. Sam was generous, courageous, and a friend to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him." Sam O. White was a tough, deep-voiced, six-foot-tall, two-hundred-pound former Maine lumberjack and guide. From 1922, for half a century he crisscrossed wild Alaska by foot, with packhorses, dog teams, canoe, riverboat, and airplane. He helped map the Territory, trap fur, and became the world’s first flying game warden. White wrote exciting tales about his Alaska adventures, and those writings make up the bulk of this volume. In 1927, he arrived at Fort Yukon as a game warden when millions of dollars worth of fine arctic furs annually arrived there. The hardy frontier trappers considered the new game warden a joke, but he quickly taught them to respect conservation laws. He was frustrated by the impossibility of adequately patrolling thousands of square miles by dog team, boat, and on foot, so with his own money, he bought an airplane. Pioneer pilots Noel and Ralph Wien taught him how to fly it. White then startled remote trappers and others by suddenly arriving from the sky. In 1941, lack of backing from Juneau headquarters caused him to resign as a wildlife agent. At Fairbanks, Noel Wien made him Chief Pilot for Wien Airlines. For the next two decades White flew as an Alaskan bush pilot, admired for his flying skill and the superior service he provided residents who flew with him, and who depended upon him for receiving mail and supplies. He had countless friends—one hundred arrived for his seventieth birthday party. His integrity and principles were of the highest. Decades after his death, he is still spoken of with awe by the long-time Alaskans.

From miners meals and home remedies to holiday fare, beverages, and housekeeping, Gold Rush Grub follows the trail of stampeders from Sutter's Mill in California to Alaska and the Klondike. The first food history of its kind, Gold Rush Grub presents a panoramic view of an exciting period in American history. The grub that stampeders ate was affected by everything from arctic weather to Pacific Coast agriculture and Midwest meat packing. For those who struck it rich, there were oysters, ice cream, and cognac. The less fortunate had to make due with beans and nettle soup. Readers with an adventurous palate can experiment with recipes for scalloped grayling and caribou scrapple. Those who prefer to leave the porcupines and bears in peace will enjoy the engaging prose and historic photographs. Gold Rush Grub will appeal to general readers, cookbook aficionados, and anyone who loves a good meal and a great story. "There's a heavy dose of gold rush history here, which sets it a cut above your normal recipe-oriented cookbook." The Midwest Book Review "[A] fascinating new culinary history of gold miners in California, Alaska and the Klondike." Northwest Palate Chandonnet ably demonstrates how the cuisine high and low of the western gold rushes fits into America's culinary mainstream. A unique look at the last great adventure.
