Book Synopsis Food, Drink and Identity by : Peter Scholliers
Download or read book Food, Drink and Identity written by Peter Scholliers and published by Berg Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food and drink have provided fascinating insights into cultural patterns in consumer societies. There is an intimate relationship between food and identity but processes of identity formation through food are far from clear. This book adds a new perspective to the existing body of scholarship by addressing pivotal questions: is food central or marginal to identity construction? Does food equally matter for all group(ing)s? Why would, in peoples experience, food become especially important at one moment, or, on the contrary, lose its significance? The origin of food habits is also interrogated. Contributors investigate how, when, why and by whom cooking, eating and drinking were used as a means of distinction. Leading historians and sociologists look at concepts of authenticity, adjustment, invention and import, as well as food signs and codes, and why they have been accepted or rejected. They examine a wide range of periods and topics: the elderly, alcohol and identity in Early Modern Europe; food riots and national identity; noble families, eating and drinking in eighteenth-century Spain; consumption and the working class in the nineteenth century; commensality; the meaning of Champagne in Belle-Epoque France; the narrative of food in Norway; wine and bread in French Algeria; food and identity in post-war Germany. This intriguing book brings together new, comparative insights and research that allow a better understanding of processes of integration and segregation, the role of food in the construction of identity, and the relationship between old and new food habits.

It has been remarked that the discovery of many of our medicinal springs has been due to some romantic incident, or, in other cases, to some occurrence partaking almost of the ludicrous. At the famed Carlsbad, for instance, a princely hunter pursues his stag into the lake where it has sought refuge, whereupon the unusual cries of his hounds, too eagerly breasting the waters, speedily reveal to him the strongly thermal nature of the spring which feeds the lake, and the discovery has benefited the thousands who annually frequent that health-giving resort from almost every land. On the other hand, in the case of our own Bath, although well known to the ancient [...]".

Book Synopsis Youth And The State In Hungary by : Laszlo Kurti
Download or read book Youth And The State In Hungary written by Laszlo Kurti and published by Pluto Press (UK). This book was released on 2002-07-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the nature of Hungary's youth movements over the last 70 years. Kurti studies the lives of youth workers in the Csepel district of Budapest in the wider context of 20th century political and economic transformations. He follows the state-youth relations from the inter-war capitalism that made peasants into workers, through post-war state socialism, to the reintroduction of capitalism in 1990. The eight chapters reveal the reproduction of class in youth culture across shifting socio-economic conditions, as well as the mobilization of youth movements in resistance to the state, which he argues has in fact served the interests of the state. Book Synopsis The Power of the Pulpit by : Gardiner Spring
Download or read book The Power of the Pulpit written by Gardiner Spring and published by . This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gardiner Spring's 'The Power of the Pulpit' is an old classic on preaching that truly believes in the pulpit. It deserves to stand on every minister's bookshelf beside Spurgeon's 'Lectures to my Students' and Lloyd-Jones's 'Preaching.' I'll never forget the first time I read Spring's chapter on a minister's personal piety; it overwhelmed me, and moved me to tears, to silence, to confession, and to prayer for mercy and help. This is a great book which every minister should read and re-read, if he really wants to get a sense of the magnitude, awesomeness, power, and beauty of his calling." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke
