Book excerpt: The original work, in Russian, appeared in 1947 and is still regarded as an important contribution to knowledge of the early history of the Eskimo. This translation makes available in English the results of archaeological research in a significant area, the extreme northeast of continental Asia, and the data reported are a valuable addition to previous information on the ethnology, linguistics and physical anthropology of the peoples of the Arctic. In particular this book reports investigations made by the author on the coast of the Chukchi Peninsula from the village of Uwelen in the north to the village of Sirhenik in the south. This is volume I in a series Anthropology of the North: Translations from Russian Sources being sponsored by the Arctic Institute of North America.

The sea, fisher life and fisher folk as well as the harbour and the lifeboat therefore dominate this book although it also includes old images of the town's streets almost devoid of life, unlike today when Seahouses teems with tourists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The archaeological remains at Howick consist of a Mesolithic hut site and an Early Bronze Age cist cemetery located on a modern cliff edge overlooking a small estuary. This volume is devoted solely to the reporting and interpretation of the Mesolithic remains. Three huts had been constructed on the Howick site, all on the same footprint, with no evidence to indicate a gap between these occupations, and the remains inside the hut were all consistent with its use as a habitation site. The lithic material from Howick is the most accurately dated assemblage from any British Mesolithic site and is a classic example of a narrow-blade industry. Typically for Britain these sites date from around 7500 cal BC but the Howick dates indicate an earlier start for this type of industry. The chipped stone assemblage from Howick is all made from locally occurring beach pebble flint which fits into the wider pattern of localised raw material acquisition by groups elsewhere in North-East England. A wide variety of tool types were found within the hut reflecting the diverse activities that appear to have taken place there. With such a wide range of resources on offer on a year-round basis, the site is interpreted as a base camp settlement that was used by the same group and their descendants over a period of several generations lasting for somewhere in the region of 200 years. The size of the hut indicates its use by a family-sized group. The Howick excavations have forced a rethink of the scale and nature of Mesolithic settlement in North-East England, as well as the relationship between this and other regions around the North Sea Basin. It is hoped that this work will help encourage further research into the Mesolithic of the region and its interactions with adjacent areas of upland, other North Sea Basin communities, as well as groups occupying the lands further north and south.

Idly looking in an estate agent’s window, she is drawn to Sea Music – a cliff-top house overlooking the North Sea. Enchanted by the name, she is inexplicably compelled to view it. While there she has a strong sense of déjà vu – warm feelings at first, giving way to a sense of loneliness and searching for someone. At the top of the cellar steps, she is suddenly light-headed and unable to make the move to descend. Something unpleasant is clawing at her mind, but she can’t bring it to the fore. That evening she is haunted by a woman’s face and a name – Lydia. Always believing she has no relatives apart from her parents, she is shocked to learn that Lydia was her aunt who died in a mysterious fall at Sea Music. She also discovers that Lydia’s baby son was abducted a few years before her death, and the abductor never found. Jess sets out to unearth the reasons why her parents never told her about her aunt and the events leading up to Lydia’s mysterious death. Sea Music is a gripping story of betrayal and tragedy, loss and guilt. Spanning more than thirty years, Sea Music is a compelling story of one woman’s search for the truth. This book will appeal to fans of mystery fiction.
