Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Editors of the Saintsbury Memorial Volume have been encouraged by the welcome which that book received to make a final gathering of George Saintbury's writings. From a score of different sources they have chosen essays and papers that have lain uncollected, with their themes ranging from Captain Marryat to Erasmus, from Rosetti to Xenephon, from Swinburne to Balzac's early pot boilers. Included is an entrancing study of the literary associations of the city of Bath; and the editors have followed Saintbury's own example by collecting a Scrap Book more than thirty shorter notes and jeux d'esprit on all kinds of subjects: wigs, sensation novelists, Drummond and Ben Jonson, George Sand, compulsory Greek at Oxford, Shakespeare and Welsh, Laurence Sterne tittle-tattle, Marcel Proust, and much else in true Saintsburian vein.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Old New York "Apretty assemblage, Mr. Boylston." "As pretty, your Excellency, as I have seen in New York." "I hope the occasion may prove worthy of it. Have you made a choice, Miss Sophia?" inclining his head toward the young lady who sat in the farther comer of the carriage. "I am between the two horns of a dilemma, your Excellency," Miss Boylston answered, laughingly. "My sympathies run with the Virginian; but I confess my judgment leans toward the English horse. So you see I am at contraries whether to risk my judgment or my sentiments, for I should be vastly sorry to find either amiss." "Then back your sentiments," the Governor urged in good humour, "for 'tis a common experience that a young lady's most trustworthy guide is her heart." She was the daughter of Captain Jansen Van Clyffe who, during the Revolutionary War, had been famous for harassing British commerce in his swift, well-armed ship, The Retribution. But Catharine was born when the war was over, and the United States navy had, for a time, ceased to exist. Then Captain Van Clyffe had begun to sail his own ship, The Golden Victory, on his own commercial ventures. To the east and the west he sailed, to the other side of the world, and all round the world, home again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all talk about the "tube" or "box," as if television were simply another appliance like the refrigerator or toaster oven. But Cecilia Tichi argues that TV is actually an environment--a pervasive screen-world that saturates almost every aspect of modern life. In Electronic Hearth, she looks at how that environment evolved, and how it, in turn, has shaped the American experience. Tichi explores almost fifty years of writing about television--in novels, cartoons, journalism, advertising, and critical books and articles--to define the role of television in the American consciousness. She examines early TV advertising to show how the industry tried to position the new device as not just a gadget but a prestigious new piece of furniture, a highly prized addition to the home. The television set, she writes, has emerged as a new electronic hearth--the center of family activity. John Updike described this "primitive appeal of the hearth" in Roger's Version: "Television is--its irresistible charm--a fire. Entering an empty room, we turn it on, and a talking face flares into being." Sitting in front of the TV, Americans exist in a safety zone, free from the hostility and violence of the outside world. She also discusses long-standing suspicions of TV viewing: its often solitary, almost autoerotic character, its supposed numbing of the minds and imagination of children, and assertions that watching television drugs the minds of Americans. Television has been seen as treacherous territory for public figures, from generals to presidents, where satire and broadcast journalism often deflate their authority. And the print culture of journalism and book publishing has waged a decades-long war of survival against it--only to see new TV generations embrace both the box and the book as a part of their cultural world. In today's culture, she writes, we have become "teleconscious"--seeing, for example, real life being certified through television ("as seen on TV"), and television constantly ratified through its universal presence in art, movies, music, comic strips, fabric prints, and even references to TV on TV. Ranging far beyond the bounds of the broadcast industry, Tichi provides a history of contemporary American culture, a culture defined by the television environment. Intensively researched and insightfully written, The Electronic Hearth offers a new understanding of a critical, but much-maligned, aspect of modern life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diary of a Little Girl in Old New York I think there are many New Yorkers who like myself, have spent most, Of a long life in this delightful old town, that love to go back in memory to the quaint little city Of their childhood which has so completely disappeared in the great metropolitan com munity of to-day. Perhaps this little book which is a faith ful record of events as seen by childhood eyes and recorded in childhood fashion may give an hour or two of pleasure to old friends of the city far and near, and al though they may not any more see the tree embowered streets Of long ago and the lit tle two-story brick houses with their dor mer windows and slanting roofs that used to line both sides of the street, the author hopes that these pages may bring back some of the scenes they were familiar with and help to renew, in Spirit at least, some of the Old friendships and affections they enjoyed when the heart was young.
