Chicago won the fight to be considered part of the nation's first transcontinental railroad, and the Gateway City's delay in building a railroad bridge over the Mississippi River kept St. Louis in second place railroad service in the Midwest. But while Chicago had the Pullman Car Company, St. Louis featured more of the most important manufacturers in the rail industry, including American Car & Foundry and the St. Louis Car Company. St. Louis was dotted with historic rail structures ranging from its grand Union Station to depots built just after the Civil War, and a number of its suburbs were born of rail lines serving the area, with streets that still wear the names of the railroads they paralleled. In Trains and Trolleys of St. Louis, you have a ticket to hop aboard and travel across nearly two centuries through what the city built, operated, and preserved for the railroad. Hear the stories of the great-grandfathers who worked the rails, or take a walk down memory lane and a streetcar ride down to Gaslight Square. Local author and locomotive enthusiast Molly Butterworth carefully catalogues the history and significance of St. Louis' connection to its railroad days. Through the years, many of the railroad stations and streetcar stops have gone by the wayside, but their stories have lived on. Read about the ones you can still go enjoy, included in the many wonderful secrets shared among the pages of Trains and Trolleys of St. Louis.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New St. Louis: A Concise History of the Metropolis of the West and Southwest, With a Review of Its Present Greatness and Immediate Prospects The publication of "Old and New St. Louis" has been delayed far beyond the wishes of the publishers by the immense amount of work which had to be done, not only in securing data concerning the lives and achievements of prominent men in the city, but also in having the necessary steel plates made. A large number of gentlemen who could not possibly be excluded from a work of this character have been absent from the city, and neither photographs nor biographical data could be obtained until they returned. The completeness of the work and the unprecedented and uniform excellence of the plates is ample justification for the delay. The introductory and historical chapters have been in print for upwards of a year, and since they were written a number of events have taken place which have greatly affected the city's standing and its prospects. The financial depression of 1893 has been succeeded by a period of healthy reaction. No city in the United States withstood the panic in such a thoroughly satisfactory manner as St. Louis, which has the proud record of no bank failure for a period of nearly nine years. St. Louis generally is in a much better condition financially and commercially than it was when the earlier chapters of this work were prepared, and it now stands before the world a model of financial strength and of conservative progressiveness. The largest Union Railroad Station in the world, described in Chapter V., was completed during the summer of 1894 and opened with befitting ceremonies at the commencement of the fall festivities season. In every respect the depot has proved to be superior to expectation, and the words of praise written in anticipation of the completion of the work seem feeble and inadequate in view of the magnificent realization. The Planters Hotel, also described as in course of construction, was completed shortly after the New Union Station and was opened to the public immediately. Like the magnificent structure fourteen blocks farther west, the Planters Hotel - referred to in this work as the New Planters House, its exact title not having been determined upon until a recent date - far exceeds expectation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a thriving metropolis on the banks of the Mississippi, St. Louis, Missouri, is now a ghostly landscape of vacant houses, boarded-up storefronts, and abandoned factories. The Gateway City is, by any measure, one of the most depopulated, deindustrialized, and deeply segregated examples of American urban decay. "Not a typical city," as one observer noted in the late 1970s, "but, like a Eugene O'Neill play, it shows a general condition in a stark and dramatic form." Mapping Decline examines the causes and consequences of St. Louis's urban crisis. It traces the complicity of private real estate restrictions, local planning and zoning, and federal housing policies in the "white flight" of people and wealth from the central city. And it traces the inadequacy—and often sheer folly—of a generation of urban renewal, in which even programs and resources aimed at eradicating blight in the city ended up encouraging flight to the suburbs. The urban crisis, as this study of St. Louis makes clear, is not just a consequence of economic and demographic change; it is also the most profound political failure of our recent history. Mapping Decline is the first history of a modern American city to combine extensive local archival research with the latest geographic information system (GIS) digital mapping techniques. More than 75 full-color maps—rendered from census data, archival sources, case law, and local planning and property records—illustrate, in often stark and dramatic ways, the still-unfolding political history of our neglected cities.

Book excerpt: Food historian Cynthia Clampitt pens the epic story of what happened when Mesoamerican farmers bred a nondescript grass into a staff of life so prolific, so protean, that it represents nothing less than one of humankind's greatest achievements. Blending history with expert reportage, she traces the disparate threads that have woven corn into the fabric of our diet, politics, economy, science, and cuisine. At the same time she explores its future as a source of energy and the foundation of seemingly limitless green technologies. The result is a bourbon-to-biofuels portrait of the astonishing plant that sustains the world.

Book excerpt: St. Louis is one of the most architecturally impressive cities in the United States, with a heritage of innovative design stretching back to the early 1800s. This is reflected in the architecture of the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods. More than just about any city in America, St. Louis embraced the imposing forms and lush ornamentation of the Beaux Arts tradition. Indeed, one can make the argument that only Washington, D.C. in the United States has a more impressive collection of classically inspired structures. American City: St. Louis Architecture is the first large-format book on the city's architecture since the 1920s, and includes over 100 new color photographs and text for 50 of the city's most important structures. These range from such 19th Century masterpieces as Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building, Alfred Mullet's Old Post Office and Theodore Link's Union Station, to Eero Saarinen's Gateway Arch, Tadao Andao's Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts Building and Maya Lin's recently completed Ellen Clark Hope Plaza.
