Book excerpt: In ancient Israel the production of food was a basic concern of almost every Israelite. Consequently, there are few pages in the Old Testament that do not mention food, and food provides some of the most important social, political and religious symbols in the biblical text. Not Bread Alone is the first detailed and wide-ranging examination of food and its symbolism in the Old Testament and the world of ancient Israel. Many of these symbols are very well-known, such as the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, the abominable pig and the land flowing with milk and honey. Nathan MacDonald demonstrates that the breadth biblical symbolism associated with food reaches beyond these celebrated examples, providing a collection of interrelated studies that draw on work on food in anthropology or other historical disciplines. The studies maintain sensitivity to the literary nature of the text as well as the many historical-critical questions that arise when studying it. Topics examined include: the nature and healthiness of the ancient Israelite diet; the relationship between food and memory in Deuteronomy; the confusion of food, sex and warfare in Judges; the place of feasting in the Israelite monarchy; the literary motif of divine judgement at the table; the use of food in articulating Israelite identity in the post-exilic period. The concluding chapter shows how some of these Old Testament concerns find resonance in the New Testament.

Book excerpt: In this 1982 gay murder mystery by the author of Vermilion, summer in Provincetown is a nonstop party—until it stops dead. Daniel Valentine is a gay bartender and former social worker. Clarisse Lovelace is his straight pal who works in real estate. They make an unconventional investigative duo—but sometimes unconventional is exactly what’s called for. Summer in P’town is definitely earning its reputation as Sodom-by-the Sea. Daniel scored a job tending bar for the season and Clarisse is here too, looking fabulous and searching for trouble. Only she finds the wrong kind when a dead body turns up on a beach. No one knew Jeff that well, but his arresting cobalt eyes certainly caught people’s attention. They made him some friends—and quite a few enemies. Which of these killed him? “In many ways it’s not all that different from Miss Marple snooping about St. Mary Mead, only here drag queens replace governesses and coke dealers replace vicars.” —Gay Community News

Not in a deep, metaphoric sense: They find copies of themselves onstage. As they look closer, they begin to realize that the world around them isn’t quite right. Turns out, when they went to the taco place across town, they actually crossed into an alien dimension that’s eerily similar to their world. The aliens have made sinister copies of cars, buildings, and people—and they all want to get Sid, Axl, and Ivan. Now the group will have to use their wits, their truck, and even their windshield scraper to escape! But they may be too late. They may now be copies themselves . . .

Fisher's novel about the writing of the Job poem and how its message was largely silenced by locating it within the more ancient story is a likely tale that, in any case, brings to life the world of scholars at David's court. It also shows that modern skepticism is not so modern after all!" --John Cobb, Emeritus Professor, Claremont School of Theology About the Contributor(s): Loren R. Fisher retired as Professor of Hebrew Bible at the School of Theology at Claremont and as Professor of Semitic Languages and Literature at the Claremont Graduate University. Their love is fragile and stormy, like the Great Northwest where they respect no boundaries whether under sail or on a snowbound mountaintop, heedless of the natural dangers that could destroy them. Fueled by alcohol and illusions, they wander the city and savor every kind of risk the dregs and jazz joints have to offer; but the path they have chosen is madness. When the fantasies take a a new turn and the alcohol and the nightmares threaten their love, they are faced with a terrifying decision: hold tight to their illusions or commence the long, hard journey to sobriety and hope. The decision is theirs alone to make and theirs alone to suffer, although it may not turn out as they expected.
