Book excerpt: The selection of drawings demonstrates how Raphael created a specific mode of visual invention and persuasive communication through drawing. He used drawing both as conceptual art (including brainstorming sheets) and as a practice based on attentive observation (such as drawing from the posed model). Yet Raphael's drawings also reveal how the process of drawing in itself, with its gestural rhythms and spontaneity, can be a form of thought, generating new ideas. The Oxford exhibition will present drawings that span Raphael's entire career, encompassing many of his major projects and exploring his visual language from inventive ideas to full compositions. The extraordinary range of drawings by Raphael in the Ashmolean and the Albertina, enhanced by appropriate loans, will enable this exhibition to cast new light on this familiar artist, transforming our understanding of Raphael's art.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ashmolean possesses one of the great international collections of drawings: a conspectus of European drawing at its most distinguished and varied. This catalog includes works by artists working in Italy, Spain, and Northern Europe, from the time of the Renaissance to the end of the eighteenth century. There are five drawings by Michelangelo, and five by Raphael, including his youthful self-portrait. Leonardo is represented by two small drawings of unicorns, and there are major studies by Perugino, Carpaccio, and Titian. An imposing group by Baroque artists is followed by fine examples of the work of Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi, Piazzetta, and Piranesi. From north of the Alps there are drawings by Rubens, Rembrandt, and Durer, and probably the finest study ever made by Grunewald. The art of France is represented by Claude Lorrain, Watteau, Fragonard, and Ingres, and that of Britain by Holbein, Lely, Gainsborough, John Robert Cozens, and Rowlandson.

Book excerpt: Published to accompany the first solo exhibition of Philip Guston at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford from 23 November 2019 to 8 March 2020 Features many works by the American artist not seen in the UK before Philip Guston (1913-1980) was an internationally acclaimed American artist whose response to the political and social tumult of the post-war decades resulted in a prolific artistic output. Over the course of his career, his style transformed from figuration to abstraction to figuration. Born Phillip Goldstein, the artist began drawing incessantly at the age of 12. Aware of antisemitism, he changed his name in 1935, the year he moved to New York. After producing award-winning murals in a 'realist' style for President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s and early 1940s, Guston embraced the painting trend of Abstract Expressionism. The upheavals of the 1960s - civil rights protests, brutal state violence, race riots - made him question the relevance of gestural abstraction, however, and his drawing explored the new figuration for which he is best known. In response to the Vietnam War and the hypocrisy of the political administration under President Richard Nixon in the 1970s, his figurative drawing intensified to address universal issues facing modern humankind. Guston's productive output was driven by his desire to unify the story and the plastic structure of the artwork in response to a changing political and social landscape. 'Locating the image' through intensive periods of drawing was central to this. This exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, curated by Professor Karen Lang with Dr Lena Fritsch, is the first solo show of Guston's work in Oxford. His artistic language, characterized by masterful technique, exuberant stylistic variety and the depiction of everyday objects, is readily recognizable. This catalog introduces Guston's art to visitors who may be unfamiliar with it by displaying works on paper from each stylistic phase. At the same time, it presents a new understanding to those familiar with Guston's practice by focusing on two themes: the role of drawing on the one hand, and the inspiration he took from literature on the other.

Book excerpt: Curated by Koons himself, together with guest curator Norman Rosenthal, this show features seventeen important works, fourteen of which have never been exhibited in the UK before. They span the artist's entire career and his most well-known series, including Equilibrium, Statuary, Banality, Antiquity and his recent Gazing Ball sculptures and paintings. This exhibition will provoke a conversation between his creations and the history of art and ideas with which his work engages. Jeff Koons burst onto the contemporary art scene in the 1980s. He has been described as the most famous, important, subversive, controversial and expensive artist in the world. From his earliest works Koons has explored the 'ready-made' and 'appropriated image', using unadulterated found objects and creating painstaking replicas of ancient sculptures and Old Master paintings which almost defy belief in their craftsmanship and precision. Throughout his career Koons has pushed at the boundaries of contemporary art practice, stretching the limits of what is possible. Exhibition: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK (07.02.-09.06.2019).
