And so when we speak of you as Old John, we do it with low ered voice, full of reverence, mellow with love, ripe with respect for a life well lived. (lold John has left me here to do the dishes 81 tidy up the cabin. I saw he wanted to go to work in the garden, so I suggested a division of labor. He protested a little - he always wants to do all the unpleasant tasks himself but finally consented, and went away with a smile which said, Go ahead, now - we '11 see what kind of a housekeeper 2you are And he will see. I am writing at his table, with a pen made from an eagle's feather which we found up on the mountain side yesterday. This pad is his, too - and mine, for he said everything here is mine; and it was no orientalism, either. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The house in which he first saw the light was an unpainted, squar ish structure, only a single story high, with a big chimney in the middle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year in the Fields: Selections From the Writings of John Burroughs Among the pleasantest of my experiences I remember the evenings I spent in the little bark-covered study at Riverby, as Mr. Burroughs has named his fruit farm on the Hudson. The open fire blazed cheerfully, and the Chilly blackness of the outside night was forgotten. I had my chair at one side of the hearth, while on the other side sat Mr. Burroughs with a big cat in his lap, and the conditions seemed perfect for a de lightful evening of thinking and talking with no hurry and no worry. They ask all sorts of questions about his youth - where he lived, what he did when he was a boy, what games he played, what sports he enjoyed, what books he read, what studies he liked best, how he came to know so much about birds and animals, and how he learned to write about them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Catskills, Selections From the Writings of John Burroughs: With Illustrations From Photographs The work on the farm and the workers are gen uinely rustic, but not nearly so primitive as in the times that Mr. Burroughs most enjoys recalling. Oxen are of the past, the mowing-machine goes over the fields where formerly he labored with his scythe, stacks at which the cattle pull in the Winter time are a rarity, and the gray old barns have given place to modern red ones. It is a dairy country, and on every farm is found a large herd of cows; but the milk goes to the creameries. The women, however, still share in the milking, and there is much of nu affected simplicity in the ways of the household. On days when work is not pushing, the men are likely to go hunting or fishing, and they are always alert to observe chances to take advantage Of those little gratuities which nature in the remoter rural regions is constantly offering, both in the matter Of game and in that of herbs and roots, berries and nuts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Nature Studies for Little People, Vol. 2: From the Essays of John Burroughs When Little Nature Studies was first edited it was designed only as a book to be placed in the hands of children in the first year's work at school, as an aid to the teacher to create and cultivate in her pupils a love for nature, and to induce in them the naturalist's careful method of observation. It was presumed that the child would incidentally learn to read while learning to observe and think, since the simple monosyllabic sentences of John Burroughs's elegant diction unconsciously carried with them all the simplicity and other desirable elements so eagerly sought by professional manufacturers of first-reader and primer reading-matter combined with the yet more desirable qualities of profound insight and masterful strength. As education progresses in our country, as the public mind awakens to the importance of managing a child's time in school with thrift and in such manlier that his ability may be conserved, as educators acquire a quickened pedagogical sense, the inane puerility of the reading-matter forced upon children in the last few decades will, more and more, arouse contempt and aggressive opposition. Book excerpt: The Wit of a Duck and Other Papers by John Burroughs John Burroughs was born April 3, 1837, in a little farmhouse among the Catskill Mountains. He was, like most other country boys, acquainted with all the hard work of farm life and enjoyed all the pleasures of the woods and streams. His family was poor, and he was forced at an early date to earn his own living, which he did by teaching school. At the age of twenty-five he chanced to read a volume of Audubon, and this proved the turning-point in his life, inspiring a new zeal for the study of birds and enabling him to see with keener eyes not only the birds themselves, but their nests and surroundings, and to hear with more discernment the peculiar calls and songs of each. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Burroughs (April 3, 1837 - March 29, 1921) was an American naturalist and nature essayist, active in the U.S. conservation movement. The first of his essay collections was Wake-Robin in 1871. In the words of his biographer Edward Renehan, Burroughs' special identity was less that of a scientific naturalist than that of "a literary naturalist with a duty to record his own unique perceptions of the natural world." The result was a body of work whose resonance with the tone of its cultural moment explains both its popularity at that time, and its relative obscurity since.Burroughs was the seventh of Chauncy and Amy Kelly Burroughs' ten children. He was born on the family farm in the Catskill Mountains, near Roxbury in Delaware County, New York. As a child he spent many hours on the slopes of Old Clump Mountain, looking off to the east and the higher peaks of the Catskills, especially Slide Mountain, which he would later write about. As he labored on the family farm he was captivated by the return of the birds each spring and other wildlife around the family farm including frogs and bumblebees. In his later years he credited his life as a farm boy for his subsequent love of nature and feeling of kinship with all rural things. During his teen years Burroughs showed a keen interest in learning. Among Burroughs's classmates was future financier Jay Gould.[5] Burroughs' father believed the basic education provided by the local school was enough and refused to support the young Burroughs when he asked for money to pay for the books or the higher education he wanted. At the age of 17 Burroughs left home to earn the money he needed for college by teaching at a school in Olive, New York.
