Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because gramophonic technology grew up alongside Ireland’s progressively more outspoken and violent struggles for political autonomy and national stability, Irish Modernism inherently links the gramophone to representations of these dramatic cultural upheavals. Many key works of Irish literary modernism—like those by James Joyce, Elizabeth Bowen, and Sean O’Casey—depend upon the gramophone for their ability to record Irish cultural traumas both symbolically and literally during one of the country’s most fraught developmental eras. In each work the gramophone testifies of its own complexity as a physical object and its multiform value in the artistic development of textual material. In each work, too, the object seems virtually self-placed—less an aesthetic device than a “thing” belonging primordially to the text. The machine is also often an agent and counterpart to literary characters. Thus, the gramophone points to a deeper connection between object and culture than we perceive if we consider it as only an image, enhancement, or instrument. This book examines the gramophone as an object that refuses to remain in the background of scenes in which it appears, forcing us to confront its mnemonic heritage during a period of Irish history burdened with political and cultural turbulence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fascinating world of the record business, its technology, the music and the musicians from Edison's phonograph to the compact disc. The great artists - Caruso, Toscanini, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley and their successors - all achieved fame through the medium of records, and in turn have influenced the recording industry. But just as important are the record producers, those invisible figures who decide from behind the scenes how a record will sound. The history of recording is also the history of record companies: the book follows the vicissitudes of the multinational giants, without neglecting the small pioneering labels which have brought valuable new talents to the fore.

Every 7th grade teacher and student needs this book. The search now beings for the Answer Key for the book." "I cannot say enough about this company! The book is EXCELLENT!!!!!! It is exactly what I have been looking for for the past 6 years! BRAVO!" "This book is a religious/spiritual book, which I was not aware of. The merchant stated I would be charged a 10 percent restocking fee if I returned the book. I felt that was unfair since the information on Yahoo Shopping never indicated that the book was based on religious idiology." -Sorry my friend, but the war on terrorism has a religious/spiritual foundation. You should be charged a thousand percent for not understanding this simple, yet significant, concept. The Author. "Great book ! Very inspirational . When is the next one coming out? Puts you in a good mood. I recomend reading." "Anneee will win your heart." --Night Owl Review, November 10, 2005 "I really enjoyed this story. It was a fun read every bit as good as most bestselling fiction." --Jack-of-all-trades Jack Of Alltrades "Just another soul" (Yellow Mountain, United States) "I can happily recommend Kenneth Brophy's wonderful book, ANNEEE. It's very difficult to find books these days that interest young readers. My own daughters are so drawn to the Internet, television, and video games, so I was completely thrilled when they became absorbed in Kenneth Brophy's wonderful book, ANNEEE. It's an extremely well-written page turner, one that should be on the shelves of every library and school in the country. " --Richard Lawrence  Eaton Literary Agency

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the workers of Tianjin (Tientsin) and how, in the first half of the 20th century, they helped shape Tianjin's identity as the major industrial centre of North China. This text should be of interest to students of the period covered, and also to those students of Communist China who wish to understand the antecedents of China's current urban society and trace the roots of powerful continuities. The book offers a wealth of detail on material life, forms of entertainment, local festivals and individual rites of passage and makes use of studies of the local economy carried out by contemporaries and in the People's Republic. The Workers of Tianjin is a contribution to both Chinese labour history and urban history.
