Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Fountain Inn: And Other Poems Oh! will he not forbear - forsooth! Or turn his eyes away? He brandishes unwelcome truth, And fills me with dismay. I've tried some simple rhymes of late, And full-armed there he stands! I think - I feel - I know I hate To trust me in his hands! I pout my lip, - I stamp my foot, - I frown, - I look askance; He tears up by the very root The weed I name romance. My poetry - he dubs it prose; He cares not for my frown, I wish some don would him depose, Or beat the windmill down! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before there was an inn and a fountain, the present town of Fountain Inn was half Indian Territory bisected by the "Old Indian Boundary Line." It was established in 1766 by a treaty made between Old Hop, the head of the Cherokees, and Gov. James Glen of the province of South Carolina. The Cherokees used this area--a region of dense forests, canebrakes, and springs of water--for hunting deer, turkeys, panthers, bears, wolves, wildcats, and even buffalo. Only a few settlers had moved to the territory prior to the Revolutionary War. The Fairview Presbyterian Church community was not settled until 1786. Around 1830, a stagecoach stop was established where there was not only an inn but also a spring of water that gushed two feet in the air like a fountain. In time, the stop became known as Fountain Inn. After the War Between the States, Noah Cannon, a resident of the Greer area, bought up huge tracts of land, and so began the village that was chartered in 1886.

Book excerpt: The author of the popular blog “The Streets of Washington” shares new vignettes and reader favorites exploring the colorful history of America’s capitol. In Lost Washington, D.C., John DeFerrari investigates the bygone institutions and local haunts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Washington may seem eternal and unchanging with its grand avenues and stately monuments, but longtime locals and earlier generations knew a very different place. Discover the Washington of lavish window displays at Woodies, supper at the grand Raleigh Hotel and a Friday night game at Griffith Stadium. From the raucous age of burlesque at the Gayety Theater and the once bustling Center Market to the mystery of Suter's Tavern and the disappearance of the Key mansion in Georgetown, DeFerrari recalls the lost city of yesteryear.
