Not only do old-fashioned hymns provide a spiritual benefit, they bring back fond memories of families at home or at worship lovingly joining together to sing. While contemporary religious music offers an important new genre, old-fashioned hymns merit special recognition for their contributions to generation after generation. This collection features the "top 20" hymns that have been around for years, but still convey powerful meaning to many folks. Each arrangement is carefully crafted to introduce and cultivate finger picking (some would say "classical style") guitar techniques. Positions and fingerings are clearly marked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Hymns for Fingerstyle Guitar contains twenty five well-known hymns arranged for fingerstyle guitar in standard tuning - following the same format as the first two books in this series. The arrangements are designed for easy sight reading, with the potential to embellish them on the fly to create more complex arrangements in your own style. In addition to the hymn arrangements, the book includes tips and suggestions on adding your own introductions and endings as well as improvising variations. Recordings of all hymns are available as a free download. From the author's Introduction: As with other books in this series, the arrangements in this book are meant to be easy to play, easy to read, and most of all, easy to extend. There are two basic approaches to playing fingerstyle arrangements: memorize every note of an intricate piece and play it the same way every time, or start with an outline of the tune, and improvise variations. The first approach has the advantage that the notes are worked out ahead of time, but takes work to memorize. The music may also get stale over time, since everything is locked in. With the second approach, memorization is easier (or maybe even unnecessary), and you can continually explore new variations, making the music more fun to play, and maybe more fun to listen to. Hymns work well for the second approach, because there are so many hymns, and people are likely to request their favorites, particularly for special services. It would be difficult to maintain a large enough repretroire of complex arrangements to cover all situations. The arrangements in this book are designed to be pulled out at a moment's notice, allowing you to perform with minimal preparation. These sketches are similar to those found in "fake books," but designed for solo fingerstyle guitar. Jazz fake books are typically limited to just chord names and perhaps melody. These arrangements provide a bit more than that - basically easy-to-play arrangements with no complicated parts that are designed to be extended on the fly. Songs: At the Cross Christ the Lord is Risen Today Crown Him With Many Crowns God Will Take Care of You Great is Thy Faithfulness Have Thine Own Way, Lord He's Got the Whole World in His Hands I Love to Tell the Story I Need Thee Every Hour I Surrender All It is Well With My Soul My Faith Looks Up to Thee Nearer My God to Thee O How I Love Jesus Onward Christian Soldiers Rock of Ages Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us Softly and Tenderly Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus Take Time to be Holy 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus Trust and Obey When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When the Roll is Called Up Yonder When We All Get to Heaven

Book excerpt: Hymns for Fingerstyle Guitar contains twenty five well-known hymns arranged for fingerstyle guitar in standard tuning. From the author's Introduction: This book grew out of a need. Recently, I was asked to play during several funerals, with the request being to "just play some hymns." When I began looking for material, I found a wealth of wonderful arrangements for fingerstyle guitar, but none of them were going to work for me in this situation. Naturally, I had only a few days' notice, so I wasn't going to learn and memorize complex arrangements, no matter how beautiful they were. Even the simplest arrangements I found were many pages long, and I didn't want to be turning pages during a funeral service, the way I would if I tried to read the music rather than memorize it. I also realized that in this setting, the focus wasn't on me, or how clever or complex the music was. I just needed to play appropriate music for the occasion that helped set the mood and that didn't detract from the service. Uncomplicated, melodic arrangements would be a plus. My solution forms the basis of this book - my own arrangements that are simple, almost "sketches" of an arrangement. What I decided I needed was a type of book known as a "fake book" in jazz circles - but for hymns - and designed for solo fingerstyle guitar. Jazz fake books are typically limited to just chord names and perhaps melody. I wanted a bit more than that - basically easily-playable arrangements with no complicated parts, and designed to be extended on the fly. Hymns: Abide With Me Amazing Grace A Mighty Fortress is Our God Be Thou My Vision Blessed Assurance Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing Fairest Lord Jesus Faith of Our Fathers For the Beauty of the Earth He Leadeth Me Holy, Holy, Holy I Have Decided to Follow Jesus In the Garden Jesus Loves Me Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross Just As I Am Love Lifted Me Praise Him, Praise Him Sweet Hour of Prayer The Old Rugged Cross This is My Father's World Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder What a Friend We Have in Jesus Whispering Hope

These accessible fingerstyle arrangements of 13 traditional hymns are meant to provide opportunities for guitarists of any skill level to praise the Lord. The individual hymns are arranged in a progressive manner beginning with a simple statement of the melody which even beginners can enjoy playing. Then, when you feel more confident, you can delve into the more challenging polyphonic version of the same hymn. This pedagogical approach helps the player develop an awareness of tone and dynamics while understanding each additional voice as an important aspect of the overall arrangement. Written in standard notation and tablature with extensive left-hand fingering suggestions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book presents 18 of the most popular classical compositions typically performed at weddings. Rather than being written for the classic guitar, however, each piece is arranged for solo pick-style guitar—a.k.a., plectrum or flatpicking guitar—in both standard notation and tablature. Like classical guitar arrangements, these settings utilize the full spectrum of the guitar’s capabilities with bass lines, chords and melodies happening simultaneously. Although written for intermediate to advanced plectrum guitarists, fingerstyle players will also find these arrangements rewarding. This collection would serve as a convenient resource for pros who should be able to sight read most of this material on the job. Given that these arrangements sound complete and appropriate as plectrum guitar solos, pick-style students will also enjoy and benefit from working on these familiar melodies by Baroque, Classical and Modern masters.
