Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English History for Children With regard to the spelling of old-english names, I must plead guilty to a certain amount of inconsistency. My own feeling is in favour of always using the genuine spelling of the old names rather than the common Latin and French corruptions. But I find that many people are in a manner frightened at the unusual form which is thus given to names still in common use. I have therefore, somewhat at the ex pense of consistency, left some of the more common names, such as Alfred, Edward, and Edith, in their modern spelling; while other names which are less familiar to modern readers, and which often have no One generally received modern shape, I have left in their ancient form. On the subject of old-english names and on one or two points connected with the old-english language I have added a few remarks at the end of this Preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French History for English Children The country which we now call France was not always called so, nor were the people who live in it always called the French. When it is first mentioned, which is in old Latin books written more than 1800 years ago, it is called Gallia, or Gaul, and the people are spoken of as Gauls. Gaul was in some respects the same as France is now, and in some respects very different. It was the same, or nearly the same, in its mountains, rivers, and some of the chief towns it was different in its roads, fields, villages, and, more than all, in the people who lived in it. 'when I say that some of the towns were the same, I do not mean that they look the same now as they did then, but that the Gauls had towns in many of the places where the French now have them, and that they have lasted with almost the same names ever Since. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royal Children of English History From Alfred the Great to Edward Seventh, Told for Boys and Girls The purpose of this book is to in the History of their Fatherland - Old England. It is the grandest History in the world. It is full of romance and adventure which never grow old. We have.selected for this volume the most interesting stories which center around the boys and girls who were born to high places. Their position in life was due to inheritance which they could not help, but the boys and girls of to-day do not owe their fortune to inheritance but to inheritance - and individual effort. Although it was thus with them, it will teach the lesson of contentment to those of us who are not born in royal purple, but who have greater opportunities than birth, to rise by our own struggles to places of eminence, and to earn, by living noble lives, the true purple, which is the symbol of royal worth. Every boy and girl may in this way become a royal child and have a career of usefulness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. So many changes have taken place since the far-off days of which I am speak ing that it must be rather difficult for you to imagine what it was like then, and I shall try to help you to understand it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Arthur's History of England Though I have not the happiness to be a mother, my love of children has led me to think a good deal about them. Their amusements, and their lessons. This little history was written for a real little arthur, and I have endeavoured to write it nearly as I would tell it to an intelligent child. I well remember what I wanted to be told myself, in addition to what I found in my lesson-book, when I was first allowed to read the History of England, and I hope I have answered most of the questions I recollect to have wished to ask. I may have failed in satisfying the almost bound less inquiries of intelligent children; and I could wish that the mother or governess, who may put this little book into the hands of her pupils, would read each chapter herself before she gives it to a child, that she may be ready with answers to such questions as the chapter may suggest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of England, Vol. 2 But the Englishman did it for all that, and did it - not SO madly but so wisely, that he decoyed the great army into the narrow ill-paved lanes and bye-ways of Lincoln, where its horse-soldiers could not ride in any strong body; and there he made such havoc with them, that the whole force surrendered themselves prisoners, except the Count who said that he would never yield to any English traitor alive, and accordingly got killed. The end of this victory, which the English called, for a joke, the Fair of Lincoln, was the usual one in those times - the common men were slain without any mercy. What did the Conquest mean for England? Domesday Book, curfew bell, Norman dresses, Norman masters and manners, - a child gets no more from Dickens. To be sure, he does not clamour for more. Johnny Lockhart sent a message to his grandfather, he very much dislikes the chapter on Civilisation, and it is his desire that you will never say any more about it, for he dislikes it extremely. Dirks were enough for Master Lockhart. But, if one may speak for oneself (wtat. Sir Walter's exposi tion of the feudal ideal was lucid and highly interesting Here, one thought, was a right notion of how to live; and it is probable that, if children are to be taught history, they can easily be made to see that feudalism was a society with an idea. Dickens makes no effort to reach a child's intelligence on this point. Take, again, the Reformation. What notion does a child get from Dickens about the Re formation - about Luther's ideas On the other hand, Dickens writes here with a fine impartiality, and lets a child understand that the Reformation was dishonest, brutal, and blundering; that Henry VIII., being his own Pope, im partially burned both sides, and was, in a famous phrase.
