Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret History of the-Court of Spain During the Last Century IN presenting this history to the British public, I must draw attention to the fact that the material is gathered solely from Spanish sources, so' that where the statements do not tally with the reports of English historians it must be remembered that the book, as the mouthpiece of Spanish writers, may lay claim to a special interest of its own, particularly as some of these books are not known in our country. Thus, the account of the character of Ferdi nand VII., the story of the Second of May, 1808, the relations between England and Spain during the reign of Isabella II., and the account of the recent Regency of Maria Cristina, may Open points of View not generally entertained in England, but the fact of their sources may entitle them to some attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HOW great is Spain! How mighty! From the rugged mountains of the Asturias, their base washed by stormy waves, and the giddy heights of the Pyrenean precipices—an eternal barrier between rival peoples—to the balmy plains of the South, where summer ever reigns! A world within itself, with a world’s variety! Quien dice España dice todo! And its history is as varied as the land. First, according to the legend, Hercules set his pillars, or “keys”—the ne plus ultra of land and sea—on the rock of Calpe (Gibraltar) in Europe, and on Abyla (Ceuta) in Africa. And, that no one should doubt it, he placed his temple on the water-logged flats, half-sea, half-land, behind Cadiz, long remembered by the Moors as the “district of Idols,” near the city of Gades, where Geryon dwelt, from whom Hercules “lifted” that troop of fat oxen which he was destined so long to drive wearily about the earth. In memory of all which Charles the Fifth, the great Emperor, carried Hercules’ pillars on his shield, with the proud motto, Ne plus ultra, and the city of Cadiz (Gades) still bears them as its arms. Then, tradition past, came invaders from the earliest times, Celts, Phœnicians, and Greeks, driving the Iberians from their rightful lands. The Carthaginians, too, crossed from Africa along the southern coast, and settled at Cartagena, which still bears their name. The Romans next appeared, victorious under Pompey and Cæsar, spreading over Spain, but especially powerful at Seville, Cordoba, Toledo, Segovia, and Tarragona, where they have left their mark in mighty monuments. A race of uncivilised warriors followed from the North, so powerful that two Roman emperors perished in battle with them. Of the precise seat of the Gothic nation it is hard to speak with certainty. It is, however, known that they came from the extreme north, spreading to the borders of the Black Sea, into Asia Minor in the east, and to the south of Spain in the west. They are mentioned by Pliny, about sixty years before Christ, and later by Tacitus, who twice refers to them as “Gothones.” There were so many tribes, Visigoths, Astrogoths, Gepidæ, and even Vandals, that their story is as a tangled web, mixed with that of all nations, but it is clear that those who concern our present purpose came down into Spain from Narbonne and Toulouse. It is strange how soon these savage northmen discarded their wooden idols, Woden, Thor, and Balder, the gods of thunder and of the sun—so that when Constantine the Great christianised the world, the Gothic chief Wulfila was ready to become a convert. Who this Wulfila was, and how he came to be at Constantinople, is not clear. As Bishop of the Goths he returned to missionarise his countrymen, the Dacian tribes, in the mighty plains of Philippopolis (A.D. 310-314), and made a translation of the Bible into Gothic. Even in our own day something of this precious manuscript remains, beautifully written in letters of gold on purple vellum, at the Swedish University of Upsala.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queens of Old Spain IN a previous volume I have remarked upon the extremely small political significance of most of the Queen Consorts of England, although socially the country has become what it is mainly through feminine influence. In Spain the exact reverse has happened, and in no Christian country has the power of woman been less formative of the life and character of the nation, whilst, largely owing to personal and circum stantial accident, the share of ladies in deciding the political destinies of the country from the throne has been more conspicuous than in other European monarchies. The oriental traditions dominant in Spain for centuries tended to make wives the humble satellites rather than the equal companions of their husbands; and the inflated gallantry, before marriage at least, that sprang from the chivalrous obsession grafted upon mixed feudal and Islamic ideals, affected to exclude woman from the harder facts of existence, and from the practical problems that occupied the minds of men. But whilst these traditions limited the power of Spanish women generally, they were insufficient to counteract the extraordinary political influence of a series of remarkable feminine personalities who, mainly owing to feebleness and ineptitude of consorts, or to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royal Spain of Today Above all else, writers on foreign parts should be broad of view and unprejudiced, and if I have become prejudiced in favor of Spain, it is because I entered Spain without prejudice and have been by experience with people and country made to know and under stand its worth, its sterling qualities, and its fascina tion. Although grace and beauty abound, and music and dancing are on every hand, Spain is not, as some people believe, a country primarily of castanets and fandangoes. The Spanish people are today fully alive to their great internal possibilities; the rich mines are yielding once again rich stores, ships are busy entering and leaving Spanish harbors as of old, industries have seemingly taken on in these last ten years new impetus, new railroads are being built, and Spain is indeed born again. Surely Spain's great heritage of the past would point to great achievement in the future, and while an occasional exception in heritage may weaken the bond for a time, it rarely breaks it, and among all who understand the Spanish people of the present day, it is generally believed that Spain is entering upon a new era of progress and achievement. Surely they are fortunate in their young King, born to them a king indeed, in a moment of need and anxiety, but inheriting from all sides the qualities necessary to guide and guard his people.
