Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Journalistic Achievement Award, Texas Historical Foundation, 2004 From the simplest slab of weathered stone to the most imposing mausoleum, every marker in a Texas cemetery bears witness to a life that—in ways small or large—helped shape the history and culture of the state. Telling the stories of some of these significant lives is the purpose of this book. Within its pages, you'll meet not only the heroes of the Texas Revolution, for example, but also one of the great African American cowboys of the traildriving era (Bose Ikard) and the first woman in Texas elected to statewide office (Annie Webb Blanton). Visiting cemeteries from every era and all regions of the state, Bill Harvey recounts the histories of famous, infamous, and just plain interesting Texans who lie at rest in Texas cemeteries. The book is organized alphabetically by city for easy reference. For each city, Harvey lists one or more cemeteries, giving their location and history, if significant. At the heart of the book are his profiles of the noteworthy people buried in each cemetery. They include not only famous but also lesser-known and even unknown Texans who made important contributions to the state in the arts, sports, business, military service, politics—truly every area of communal life. For those who want to visit these resting places, Harvey also includes tips on finding cemeteries, locating gravesites, and taking good photographs. Spend time with him in the graveyards of Texas, and you'll soon appreciate what fascinating stories the silent stones can tell.

Book excerpt: In September of 2004, construction activities began in the parking lot of the historic 1912 Cameron County Courthouse, recently dubbed as the Oscar S. Dancy Building. However, during the course of this construction a significant number of human skeletal remains were disturbed and work was halted in the vicinity until proper preservation procedures could be properly determined. Archival research indicated that the human skeletal remains were related to the Campo Santo Viejo or old city cemetery which was platted as part of Brownsville's original city plan in 1848. As a result, it was deemed necessary to conduct an archaeological survey of this area which was funded by Cameron County and the Texas Historical Commission which has resulted in the archaeological research findings presented within this study. The limited excavation conducted at this site revealed a complex pattern of mortuary activity at the old cemetery and indicated that burials continued to occur until at least 1872, long after this cemetery was superceded by the Brownsville City Cemetery. This research has provided insights into both the 19th century mortuary customs and cultural mores of early Brownsville which might otherwise have been inaccessible. Due to the scope of activity and the existence of some undisturbed interments, the rationale for continued disturbance of the Campo Santo Viejo site was called into question and the Cameron County Commissioners Court decided to halt any further archaelogical investigations, rebury the disturbed remains, and return the location to its former state.

Book excerpt: Unearth the Mysteries of Those Who Lie Beneath the Oldest Graveyards in the Lone Star State Texas, the second largest state, both in land mass and population, has more than 50,000 cemeteries, graveyards, and burial grounds. As the final resting places of those whose earthly journey has ended, they are also repositories of valuable cultural history. The pioneer cemeteries—those from the 19th century—provide a wealth of information on the people who settled Texas during its years as a Republic (1836-1845), and after it became the 28th state in 1845. In What Lies Beneath: Texas Pioneer Cemeteries and Graveyards, author Cynthia Leal Massey exhumes the stories of these pioneers, revealing the intriguing truth behind the earliest graveyards in the Lone Star State, including some of its most ancient. This guide also provides descriptions of headstone features and symbols, and demystifies the burial traditions of early Texas pioneers and settlers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Runner-up, 2019 Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Book Award, sponsored by the Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association (TOMFRA) Most general histories of the Civil War pay scant attention to the many important military events that took place in the Lower Rio Grande Valley along the Texas-Mexico border. It was here, for example, that many of the South’s cotton exports, all-important to its funding for the war effort, were shuttled across the Rio Grande into Mexico for shipment to markets across the Atlantic. It was here that the Union blockade was felt perhaps most keenly. And it was here where longstanding cross-border rivalries and shifting political fortunes on both sides of the river made for a constant undercurrent of intrigue. And yet, most accounts of this long and bloody conflict give short shrift to the complexities of the ethnic tensions, political maneuvering, and international diplomacy that vividly colored the Civil War in this region. Now, Christopher L. Miller, Russell K. Skowronek, and Roseann Bacha-Garza have woven together the history and archaeology of the Lower Rio Grande Valley into a densely illustrated travel guide featuring important historical and military sites of the Civil War period. Blue and Gray on the Border integrates the sites, colorful personalities, cross-border conflicts, and intriguing historical vignettes that outline the story of the Civil War along the Texas-Mexico border. This resource-packed book will aid heritage travelers, students, and history buffs in their discovery of the rich history of the Civil War in the Rio Grande Valley.

These are tales that ‘I’ have been blessed with, passed to me from various Spirit Animals, mainly Coyote. They are filtered through ‘my’ experiences; people, places, things, & incidences that brought me to where I am today. There is no conscious effort on my part to accurately recreate any person, place, thing, or incident. If anyone has a button or two pushed, that’s probably meant to be. That said, the path lies before & may you enjoy. Peace! This one is for my beloved companion & wife, Linda for Uncle Ike, and for the ever-wandering WhiteDog Doug Hodges
